Somebody get that kid a strength and conditioning coach. Shoulder shrugs are probably the least functional and one of the most pointless exercises you could do. You're a ball player now kid....not a pro body builder. That is so true. He is body building and that is not functional strength. Building your traps is not going to help him be flexible.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post had a good article (http://nypost.com/2015/11/21/playing-detective-to-find-10-pitchers-who-fit-yankees-wishlist/) about what the Yanks look for in a starter. Now let me say this, this criteria is not out of the norm. They look for high K rates, low walk rates, and high ground ball percentages. OK nothing earth shattering there! But he gives some stats on how many pitchers in the AL actually perform to those specifications:
"Most clubs want this, but the Yankees walk this walk. Just 16 AL starters averaged more than seven strikeouts per nine innings, fewer than three walks per nine innings and induced groundballs 45 percent of the time or better (minimum 10 starts). The Yankees had four — their innings leaders: Eovaldi, Pineda, Sabathia and Tanaka. No other AL team had more than two."
At the top....."The top four finishers for the NL Cy Young (Jake Arrieta, Greinke, Clayton Kershaw and Gerrit Cole) hit those stats, as did the pitchers who finished first (Dallas Keuchel), third (Sonny Gray), fifth (Chris Archer), seventh (Felix Hernandez), eighth (Collin McHugh) and 11th (Carlos Carrasco) in the AL."
In other words, there aren't many cats that meet this criteria (7+K's per, 3- walks per, and 45%+ groundball rate). Oh surprisingly we don't have pitchers that meet this criteria. Didn't look.....maybe Buchholz?
Sherman mentions potential targets of the Yanks that fit this criteria. The 2 at the bottom of his list surprise me:
9. Chad Bettis
An under-the-radar guy. For the Rockies last year, he averaged 7.7 strikeouts per nine, 3.3 walks and induced grounders at nearly 50 percent — plus his numbers were markedly better outside of Coors Field. I am sure Colorado would want to attach Jose Reyes to a deal. I am sure the Yankees would be averse to that idea.
10. Jimmy Nelson
The Brewers are in rebuild mode under new general manager David Stearns, and Nelson and Taylor Jungmann are starters you build with — excellent strikeout and groundball numbers, good walk rates. But Stearns comes from the not-afraid-to-try-something mode, and neither guy projects as an ace. Could the Yankees, for example, send Miller somewhere for prospects Milwaukee wants enough to give up Nelson?

That video worries me some. Hasn't anyone told him about how Hanley Ramirez lifted himself to becoming LESS of an athlete? Moncada is a middle infielder. Middle infielders need flexibility and quick reflexes.....not huge muscles. Yoan was already ripped and filled out last year. Adding anymore size could actually hamper his upcoming season. Anything that may take away from his speed, base running, and defense is not in his best interest.
I'm sure each prospect is given exercises and guidelines for their off season workouts. I hope someone is staying in touch and even supervising his routines.

That's the Dodgers having their bases covered if Greinke doesn't want to return to LA. That would save the Sox from getting Zimmermann and having to forfeit a draft pick. My guess is that Greinke, if he wants to leave, winds up in either San Francisco or St. Louis. Would be willing to see the Sox surrender that 12th pick for Greinke, though, but the Sox would probably have to blow away the field to make Greinke come to Boston. If that scenario did play out and Greinke went to SF or St. Louis, and LA countered by overbidding for Zimmermann, and if Price does want to play in the NL (as much as I'd like the Sox to sign him, I can't imagine him in a Boston uniform), that would basically steer Cueto toward the Red Sox, because I have to think the Sox wind up with one of the four top pitchers. If not that puts them into the next tier (like Shark, Iwakuma, Kazmir, and Leake), which is what I think they wanted to avoid. Cueto is my #1 target. Think we should go after him hard and get him locked up ASAP. I don't want to wait for Grienke and Price to sign as it could drive more teams to Cueto and drive up the price. I think we can sign anyone of the top 3 we want, its just a matter of money. How much do you want to spend. I for one am shocked that every expert out there thinks Cueto is getting a lot less then Lester got last year. I think this is correct. Cueto has connections in Boston with Ortiz and Hanley. He would take less to sign than Price and Greinke. There is no QO pinned on him. YES he is not either of those two pitchers mentioned, but he can be a solid upgrade for our staff. The longer the off season goes I will get more and more worried if we don't lock one of these guys up. If we have to go the 2nd tier, I would go after Leake and then Kazmir in that order. That is not perfect, but it still would improve the rotation.

Does anyone here really have confidence in Dave Dombrowski's ability to make a trade for either Fernandez or Carrasco that doesn't turn this team into perpetual cellar dwellers by the end of the decade? Dombrowski's career has been built on overpaying in over-rated prospects for veterans. There is some sentiment that Margot and Guerra were the Red Sox two most overrated prospects (I don't share it), and now they have been traded. This all worked fine in Detroit where Dombrowski was trading the players he drafted so it was no big loss. I wonder how this is going to work now that the players he is trading were drafted by people who are actually good at acquiring amateur talent. So which three remaining over-rated prospects would you be willing to give up for Carrasco or Fernandez? Sorry dc......I have quite a bit of confidence in Dombrowski, and I'm not sure one trade is enough for anyone to start thinking doom and gloom. The guy has been VERY successful, and it seems you are holding the Margot trade over him. I liked Ben, but in reality a change had to be made. A different voice and techniques were called for. Give DD a chance.

I love bullpens as much as anyone and am as skeptical on Bradley as almost anyone. That being said, this team NEEDS JBjr in a bad way. Not only does he have a chance to be excellent, but his salary in the OF is too valuable. This team doesn't have the salary spot to absorb the reliever and an outfield replacement and a top line starter. As it is, they would need to dump salary to get both a top bullpen guy and starter. Buchholz is that guy IMO. I'm all for adding another big piece to the pen but I'd try to do it in FA. The advantage to doing it via trade is the guy has no choice and it may be hard to get a Soria or ODay here when Kinbrel is closing. I'm probably not trading Shaw in a package for one of them either because he's an important piece to the team this year. Marrero and Vasquez for Giles.... Hahahaha just kidding. Hope Eric and other posters are still alive. Maybe you could sell them on something like Marrero, Chavais, Ball and Light for Giles, but I doubt it. I'm sure people here will think that's way too much but I think Philly laughs at it. I would definitely be all for that swap, but as you said......not going to happen. The "point" I'm going to make is the 4 players you mention above are ALL 1st round draft choices, and ALL have shown some warts (or worse). Just lining those 4 up show you want a crap- shot the draft can be. And it is not just high schoolers. Of the 4 listed, 2 are 3-year college kids. I never have seen those 4 listed together, it just makes you re-evaluate prospects some. There are so many misses....even if you were drafted high!

Some of your opinions are pretty crappy nomar. We need another thread for something already started? Hahaha sorry Steve! I just meant that Hanley isn't necessarily going to be involved in every CLE trade OK......nomar......sorry about getting pissed. There are better ways of saying things.

Hanley to the Indians was a crappy title.Anyway, I think if Carrasco or Salazar gets traded, Cleveland will need a starter. I think JBJ + Kelly/Miley would be a good base here. Most likely Salazar is a more realistic target, but if they prefer his youth to Carrasco then they can be my guest. Some of your opinions are pretty crappy nomar. We need another thread for something already started?

I voted #3, but I almost went with #1. I love watching and weighing the attributes of prospects, but it got to the point the last 2 years that being enthused about just our farm system was not enough!
When the big club struggles it really takes away from my total pleasure of "THE" season for me. They don't have to be winning every year. I can take a somewhat poor season once in awhile....especially if the draft in June is a good one......but this roller coaster had to many valleys for me.
Kimbrel is a total stud. He literally changes how the other team looks at the game. They feel like that have to have a lead going into the 6th or 7th inning, because of our now strength in the 7th - 9th. We are setting the tone of a game more so than without him. Remember how teams did not like their chances when we had Bard and Paplebon to finish off games? Well we have a great chance of reenacting that "feeling".
We gave up a lot, I get that. I'm just glad we didn't finish 2nd. Being 2nd in a trade is as bad as not trying. When we picked up Craig Kimbrel, we actually strengthened the 7th and 8th innings IMO. I still would like Dombrowski to pick up one more solid relief pitcher, but even if we go into 2016 the way we are currently, I'm feeling a lot more confident.....and just as importantly.....the other teams have a little more fear in them about playing the Boston Red Sox.

Really quite simple. Price by a big margin because of 1) no QO, 2) been dominant in the AL East, 3) he is a lefty, 4) no known physical concern. The 2nd choice is just as easy.....Johnnie Cueto. Less money, no QO, and past track record. No one else is close, although I would have to consider Grienke if he was interested.
I actually like Zimmerman, but he is not strong enough for me to give up the 12th over-all pick for.

Can the moderators please set a 36 hour time limit on crying and bitching about this trade? LOL. Yeah this may go on till February when catchers and pitchers report. Hopefully DD will give us something else soon to dissect.

Eric my problem with this poll.....is it is too much about Miley.
Here is what I think we should do to "finish the bullpen": sign one more established relief pitcher. Many on here seem to like our 2 lefties we have. Layne is OK for pitching to a left handed hitter or two, and that is it. Robbie Ross is underwhelming, but I guess we can live with him. Not strong enough for me against quality lefty bats. I'd like us to sign Bastardo 1st, and if not him, Sipp. If we stay right handed, I like Madson or Lowe.
That is all I would do to finish the bullpen. The rest of the money in free agency needs to go toward an ace and a 4th outfielder.

I'm at the point that moving Rusney now would be a mistake. We would be moving him when his value is pretty low. He has some definite tools, and maybe we finally see them next year. I loved the way he played the Monster last year. If he could give us a line like .260/.320/.400 with his glove I'm all in. He seems like a hard working guy, and just raw in the aspects of the game. For example is his base-running. He runs well, but just doesn't have things figured out.
We need, badly, a 4th outfielder. In my opinion, one that bats left would be best so he can do some platooning with Castillo if necessary.

The reactions to this trade reflect some deep divisions in philosophy among us as well as some differences we have in the valuation of the traded prospects. Some of us have been arguing for quite a while that the Sox needed a much stronger bullpen. I put a higher value on relief pitching than some others do. We've had a lengthy debate on this issue and we are not likely to agree. I pinpointed Kimbrel as the RP, next to Chapman, who I wanted the most. However, I did not want the Sox to trade for one year of Chapman. I think almost everyone here agreed on that. But three years of Kimbrel is much different. I think the addition of Kimbrel - along with a couple more BP arms the Sox are likely to acquire probably through FA - dramatically improves the team. Other than Chapman he was, by far, the best RP available. Next to adding that elite starter, it was, in my opinion, the best move the Sox could make this offseason. I also think it was a deal that had to be done now because Kimbrel was going to be traded to somebody, and soon. Now I don't think any of us knows whether the Sox paid too much. Time will tell about that. We've had some really bad experiences with trades for RPs in the past and generally I am not in favor of trading young players who have true potential for long term MLB careers for RPs whose futures always are risky. I think the risk is somewhat less with Kimbrel because he is just reaching his prime years and he has no history of injuries. But there is no denying the risk involved with this kind of trade. When it comes to the price the Sox paid, I don't think it is as high as many others believe. While I respect the views of those with whom I have disagreed on this, I still have a somewhat lower estimate of Margot's future value than many others. I hope for his sake he proves me wrong, but I don't see in his record the kinds of stats future stars normally have, nor do I see in his manner of hitting a player who may become elite. The estimate in the piece just listed on this site about the traded players was that he might be a .275 hitter in the majors. That is good, but not great - and without a great deal of power not good enough to be a regular with the Sox. Guerra has a long ways to go to be a major league regular. He has major league defensive skills but it is questionable whether he will hit well enough in the higher levels. Most of his HRs this year were hit in the first half of the season. Logan Allen has the potential to reach the majors, but nothing I read about him convinces me that he would be a SP for the Sox or any contending team. His stuff will have to improve considerably. It might but there are many other pitchers in the system with at least similar prospects right now. The Sox got a superstar closer who will make a huge difference for the next three years - barring injury - for players who were very unlikely to play for the Sox in the next three years, if ever. That doesn't look like a bad deal to me at this time and with the present needs of the Sox. I have also come to basically the same conclusion. The way the GM meetings were going this year (fast and furious) some other team would have picked up Kimbrel. I never wanted Chapman and only one year of control. I'm personally pleased we have Kimbrel for 3 years. With one move folks we have greatly improved our bullpen. Is it understandable that having Koji now pitching the 8th and Kimbrel closing, that our starters all of a sudden feel much better about their chances of picking up wins instead of a......close and nice try? The pen still needs, at least, one more addition.

Lots of negativity!
I get it. That was a lot to trade for 70 innings.
One thing we learned about with this transaction is DD and Company are going for it this year. I have been voicing an opinion of taking our time and being ready for 2017. Well you can forget that now!
Dombrowski is definitely in competing mode. No more patience. I guess we all have to get used to that, and hopefully it will come to fruition and we are playing next October. I'd be totally shocked if DD doesn't sign one of the top free agent pitchers now. Picking up Kimbrel without doing that is crazy.
Hopefully DD signs one more reliever like a Madson or Lowe. I'd prefer a lefty even more like Sipp or Bastardo.
My initial reaction was wow.....that is too much. I've had the time to digest this move now, and would rather look at it as we are back to competing for the title. It's funny, the addition of Logan Allen sort of pissed me off. Preller sure picked up a nice package, but we have to understand one thing.....Craig Kimbrel is the REAL THING. DD will sign a free agent, hopefully with no QO.

Okay, as much as I would like to see Price - dominant pitcher and no pick- I doubt he wants to pitch here. Cueto would be my number two choice. Solid pitcher and also no pick. I really think this is the best way to go, unless Price gives us the feeling pretty soon of being interested. Either way.....don't give up the pick as we will need to replace some of that talent we just traded away. One aspect of the Kimbrel trade to consider with respect to David Price: the Sox look a lot better for 2016. A pitcher had to worry a little about coming to Boston about who was going to protect a lead.

You are probably right.
But wait one more year.
Young Trey is growing and getting stronger as we speak.
What's that? Trey has added 2 mph to his 4 seamer.
Lets give the kid 2016 and then we reconvene.

I think a Salazar/Walker type pitcher is really the best one can hope for as a trade target. The established Ace types are not coming to the sox, not without a shocking amount of talent going the other way or yet another huge FA contract. Trader Dave has successfully acquired emerging pitching talents in the past and a smaller trade would preserve more minor league depth while not piling up even more restricting, high--dollar FA contracts., Additionally, assuming the acquired players are young enough, some of the current minor league talent could mature into impact major leaguers while the acquired players are still around and (hopefully) still good.. it would not jib with Dombrowski's rhetoric about having a clear number one to lead the pitching staff, but another 2/3 with upside would be a good thing. The problem would be the perception that DDo would be doubling down on last year's strategy for rotation construction, But results aside, the idea of getting a bunch of solid to better pitchers without a clear number is not a bad strategy, especially when one considers the present and future costs of getting that Ace. Fill in the position player side with a good 4th outfielder, and then work on the bullpen. Maybe not the homerun that people want, but it might be the best balance between current needs, allowing prospects ( and Vasquez) another year to develop/ recover from injury, and seeing if one of the good pitchers in-house becomes a great pitcher. My only strong opinion is that the Sox stay away from Cueto. Too many questions about his playoff implosions and his medicals. Darn. I actually liked everything you said before you got to Cueto. There was less over-reaction and more patience than many of us communicate. Bravo! But I for one am all in for signing one Johnnie Cueto if we can get him for 5 years. I still believe he is an ace who had a bad patch. That last start in the WS showed what he is capable of. His track record is outstanding. I like what he can give us and he does not have a qualifying offer.

I don't trust Dombrowski, he's going to make things interesting but he has no track record of building a bullpen which is why they didn't win a WS and I feel he's going to make a trade or two that will REALLY piss people here off, like really badly. Do you learn from your mistakes? He built a team with ownership that went for it on big position players and starting pitching. In an interview he mentioned that the pen was a place they made a conscious decision to not prioritize money and prospects on given the fluctuating nature of relievers. He's not in that mindset currently. He stating they need power arms. I bet you're scared of the boogeyman too. pokey......pokey......you are being naughty. We are all scared of the boogeyman.....including you. I believe Dombrowski (god that is long name) will do us right. I just want him to understand "Rome was not built in a day" or a year. You don't have to listen to all of our ramblings just be smart. Chapman is a dominant pitcher, but I'd be careful giving up too much for him unless we can extend the guy. I guess I'd be OK with Guerra for him, but not Margot. And for that reason, the Reds probably say no. I'm personally OK with that. Margot is worth more than 65 innings of dominance in 2016. Now if we got that dominance for 2017 and 2018, I'd think twice.

I really like JBJ and Swihart, but if we can get a true #1 by including them with a few prospects, we should absolutely consider it. Swihart along with Joe Kelly, Henry Owens and Margot for Chris Sale would be fine by me. I know Sale is good, but dang......I'd give Swihart & their choice of Miley, Owens, or Kelly,.....That said, I know they wouldn't do that, so I don't see a deal there. With all that has been said, I'm in minority of letting Swihart and Vazquez have a full year of improving their stock. Christian needs to show he is healthy and, at least, what he was.....and Blake needs to show everyone he has the ability to become a solid defensive catcher. NEITHER should be traded! I totally believe some of you are really not understanding what we have with young Blake Swihart. You don't.....you DON"T trade a catcher with his athletic ability and offensive potential. I truly believe we will be much better next season, but I'm fine with us exploding in 2017. Some of you want it all to happen immediately and are prepared to trade anyone for a quick fix. Boy I hope Dombrowski is not into quick and temporary fixes. By the winter of 2016, Vazquez will probably be 100% and will alleviate all of the other teams' concerns to whether he can be counted on to lead their staff and catch for 130+ games. He is a valuable chip, but probably not until the middle of next summer. Swihart is going to be very good. The only question is HOW good. I would bet anyone, after pushing him this last year to lead a staff in the majors before he was even ready, he will be much MUCH better! Those of you thinking he will not even be adequate are wrong. He has the arm, the work ethic, and the ability to be a PLUS catcher.....and you want to consider throwing him to any deal that fits your fancy. Smarten up! When the White Sox have another terrible year next year, the White Sox will be much more inclined to move one Chris Sale. And that trade will be without us losing a very unique talent like Swihart. I know it is difficult for you and myself to be patient, but that is a better direction to take than believing we have to win next season. And before I forget, Dave Dombrowski......please don't even consider giving too much for a reliever like Chapman unless he signs an extension.

With Matt Weiters accepting his QO, it is somewhat shocking that others don't. Here is the link www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/matt-wieters-accepts-qualifying-offer.html. To me it made perfect sense for him to do that. Sure he could have gotten something like 4 years for 40 - 48 million, but this way he has a real Matt Weiters' year and cashes in on a much weaker free agent year. I'm sure the O's are shocked, but if he has a good year they could actually be in the race for AL East crown. He is betting on himself having a much better year and showing he can get back to catching 130 games.

Cubs being out on price would obviously eliminate a strong contender. But if they are out it, may not only due to money concerns. They have 2 aces at the top but they are lacking the second tier/depth which would make them the prime candidate to go after multiple starters. I could see them signing Lackey and Samardzija/Leake. To be honest, I am not as confident as other writers (basically unanimous opinion around baseball) that Cueto is THE target. He might fit the bill of what we were offering Lester last year (I predict Cueto to sign a deal at around 6/126), but not sure Dombrowski would be too comfortable with this. What we need is a true anchor of the rotation and not someone in between. That's why I view Cueto as a strong #2 on a contender in a perfect world. Cueto's perfect season are in line with what Price has been consistently doing over his whole career. Cueto is lacking that 6+ WAR year and I doubt he's gonna enter this plateau in his thirties. The top 2 guys of the market are obviously Price and Greinke (interchangeable), but then the question comes to mind whether the third option should be signing no expensive pitcher or desperately going after the next tier (Cueto, Zimm) or focusing on the trade market, but this would not end pretty. Teams know that they can fleece us with our surplus of prospects. Having in mind that the next 2 FA crops are going to be very dry (especially in terms of pitching), we basically have to make our move for that legit ace. We better throw everything we have at Price or Greinke. Too bad neither strikes me as an easy get. There is Price and his history with the Red Sox (its fansbase and Ortiz) and there is Greinke who has been pretty vocal about loving California and hitting. So even if he's leaving LA (maybe due to the Dodgers signing Price or his desire to be the clear ace on a team), I wouldn't put us first in the sweepstakes. Ranking: 1. Price (expecting him to sign for around 7/217) 2. Greinke (expecting him to sign at around 5/150, but he's got a pick attached to him and I want to keep the #12) 3. Cueto (6/144)4. trades (realistic targets: 1. Carrasco [great, but not ahead of Cueto yet], 2. TRoss [probably the easiest get and might be easy to extend], 3. Salazar 5. nobody 6. Zimmermann 7. Samardzija/Leake Taking everything into account, I would push to sign Cueto after a through physical. No qualifying offer and less outlay of cash. With his buddies (Ramirez and Ortiz) on the roster, it would be easier to sign him. I like Price a lot, but I'm afraid in the long run we may be running after or tail and getting no where. If DD and Henry are interested, then make him a substantial offer immediately (7 years for $210 mill) and see if he has interest. We can't wait for David Price to warm up to coming to Boston. Back to Cueto, I would guess that 6 years at $135 mill may get it done (your $144 is OK). I would not stop there, I'd try to ply either Salazar or Carrasco from the Indians also. A big thing is not to give up the #12 pick. I like Zimmerman fine, I just don't love him enough to also lose the pick. Greinke is another matter, but I greatly doubt him coming here.

I don't get the interest in Chris Young. I don't see him improving the OF. Surprised there are not many more reactions to us considering Chris Young. Yes he hit lefties last year, but he has really regressed over the last several years, has a real poor OBP, K's a lot, and is now really only an average outfielder. Danr has a great question here. Why are we wasting our time with him, if he is wanting to play a lot? He is not an above average player! I see us needing a 4th outfielder. I don't see us giving Chris Young a full time job.

In Bradford's Chat he said "Price to the Cubs has a lot of buzz because Joe Maddon connection, but the money isn't there to make it possible" .. I think there are very few possible landing spots for Price and if the Cubs are out the Red Sox are in prime position. On the Quintana stuff.. he's a very good pitcher, but he kind of fits into the Porcello, Buchholz category of guys that "has the stuff and we hope he can take the next step to become an ace".. In my opinion after last year I think Dombrowski and ownership want to bring in an unquestioned ace who can not only step in to lead the rotation, but has done so in the past. No learning on the job experience this year. I believe between the Cubs, LAD, & Boston, someone will left out on the Price/Grienke sweepstakes. The loser will get Cueto. Unless Boston trades heavily for a #1 or 1a........Most of the big money teams are financially strapped, NYY, LAA, Phi (rebuilding)..that only leaves so many teams able to sign these guys......It's ironic that some of the teams are in financial trouble is BY signing guys like these (Puhols, Hamilton, Sabathia, Texeira, Howard) not too many WS victories there. Does it make sense to anyone what Bradford is saying "the money isn't there to make it possible".....speaking of the Cubbies?? I first want to say......I HOPE HE IS RIGHT! But when you look at the Cubs roster, there is one huge contract (Jon Lester) and then there are quite a few guys making slightly above the minimum. The Chicago Cubs are not the Reds or the Brewers or the Indians. Adding a pitcher like David Price to their rotation makes them one of the big favorites for the next 3 to 4 years. This seems like the perfect time for the rather new owner to put up the money. I hope somehow Bradford is correct because I'd love to see us sign him, but to me the Cubs are a huge favorite, if they are willing to pay the big bucks. IMO the Dodgers, another big competitor for Price, will probably resign Greinke who they know and are comfortable with.
