With every mock draft I somehow get less excited. Is that possible? I am in the same camp when I see names like Blandino, Reed, etc. linked with the Red Sox. They have been burned with late helium guys, such as Vitek who have low ceilings. I want to see the Red Sox take a high ceiling guy at #26 such as Harrison, Gatewood, Gettys, Wilson,C Chavis, etc. This isn't just you, because I've seen it quite a few times, but where are people getting the idea that Vitek was a helium guy? He was mocked as high as 8th that draft year for MONTHS prior to the draft. In anything he fell. If your looking for a helium Sox pick then Raymond Fuentes is your guy.

Right. From what I understand there isn't a Phil Bickford type player this year. I could be wrong, but the highest ranked "won't sign" guy is Bukauskus.

Does anyone see a top-15 type "sign ability/firm commitment to his college" guy we can possibly snag? Not seeing many of those types mentioned in the blogs or by the draft experts (Law, Callis, Badler). JB Bukauskus is mentioned in the Draft Preview. He sent out letters to teams telling them he would be attending college. He is the only one I know of, however.

Chris Crawford also had a new mock up yesterday: #26: A.J. Reed. Boston appears to want to grab a hitter, and while this is a slight reach in terms of value for me, Reed is the best power hitter in the collegiate class. They likely would prefer Gillaspie or Fisher to land here, however. #33: Marcus Wilsonmlbdraftinsider.com/2014/05/the-mock-2014-volume-vi/I like Crawford, but he has Monte Harrison dropping to 29. Can't even begin to describe how disappointed I would be if the Sox passed on him if he gets to them.

Ryan Roberts DFA'd. Waste of a million dollars. Contact was non-guarenteed so it won't be nearly that much Or what he said

What I don't like is that the first 15 picks in the old system were protected picks but now it's only the first 10. I would change it so that teams that don't make the playoffs have their first pick protected and teams that don't make the postseason don't. Not perfect, but it would help.

The rules have changed since the Sox did this with Stern, though. Players can spent time on DL, but can't spend the whole year like they used to be able to. Almanzar still has to spend a lot of time on the active roster before he is theirs.

Gomes makes 5 mil which makes him effectively untradeable First, Gomes was worth exactly 5 million last year, so it's not as if he isn't worth what he is being paid. Second, If Vernon Wells could be included in a trade (twice!), anyone can....

Sorry if this has been answered, but why is Lester's AAV so far below his 2014 salary? I thought club options were usually calculated at cost (minus buyouts). I think he is getting this number from an article that Speir put out earlier this winter that had that number listed. I'm with you, though, in thinking it's wrong

sbb.scout.com/2/1361172.htmlBy Kiley McDaniel … The New York Yankees are poised to respond to a disappointing 2013 campaign at the major and minor league levels by shattering the record for spending on international amateurs, starting on July 2nd, 2014…. … If they go more than 15 percent above their bonus pool, they would also lose their ability to sign any international amateur for more than $300K in the 2015-16 or 2016-17 signing seasons. Thanks. Hadn't seen that from anyone before (obviously).

They only lose that ability in one signing period. It just sounds like two years because it goes from July 14-June 15. That was last year apparently MLB is stiffening the penalties this year. We'll see when more comes out. Do you have a link that says they will lose their ability to sign players in the 14-15 and 15-16 signing period? I haven't seen that linked anywhere and, like I responded to earlier, even what you quoted only refered to the one signing period.

Yes they'll face the harshes penalties which is 2 signing periods without signing anyone above 250k if the rumors are true. They would lose draft picks if an international draft is implemented either of those years. They only lose that ability in one signing period. It just sounds like two years because it goes from July 14-June 15.

Am I right that they ranked Owens ahead of Heaney on their LHP list last week but vice-versa on the top 100 list?

So if you account for the 50% luxury tax hit, the total contract turns out to be over $250 million....

Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 3 min. #RedSox invited Barnes, Hinojosa, Marrero, Owens, Ramirez, Shaw, Swihart, Meneses to major league Spring Training. Feel like I'm missing something. Vasquez is not on the 40-man, not mentioned here. Surely he'll be up with the big-league camp, no? He's been on the 40 man roster since last winter.

He used the words " my Top 50" and BA usually makes a top 100. They could conceivably have a new feature with various analysts giving their personal top 50. ADD: plus Callis refereed to several prospects being clustered in the 47 to 58 range in the Speier podcast. Each contributer has done a top 50 in the prospect handbook for as long as I can remember.

Wasn't Trayvon Robinson a touted prospect that went to SEA (I think) in the Manny deal? Yes, but it was the Bedard deal.

I'd hit quote, but I don't want to waste the ink! You make many strong points in general, I just don't agree with anything that has to do with anyone other than Xander at ss in 2014. You say "and we really don't have any insight to what the organization thinks". I think we know exactly what the they think...its the world according to Bill James. Player OBP OPS HRs Will Middlebrooks .310 .800 32 Bill James has nothing to do with the Bill James projections.

Napoli reminds me of the Mike Lowell situation. We won the world series. Everyone liked them. So we pay through the nose to bring them back when the money could well have been spent better elsewhere. Our big sign this off season...Mike Napoli....Yawn. So you would rather have an "exciting" offseason like when we acquired Crawford and Gonzalez?

I'm not great at math but it seems as though the Mariners will have 4 players (Hart, LoMo, Smoak and Montero) to play only 3 positions. Unless they are planning on playing Hart in RF of course....

I read the MLB Trade Rumors post. It did exist at one point. I also tried to relocate it unsuccessfully. It stated the option voided if traded in the post. However when I went to the attached source link to post it at that time the source actually stated the opposite so I chose not to post it due to a lack of clarification. I'm pretty sure you were thinking of Lesters contract that said he could void his option year if he was traded and had finished first or second in the Cy Young voting during the span of the contract.
