Benintendi’s historic night
Andrew Benintendi was 5-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs on Tuesday night. The only other rookie to ever have a 5-for-5 (or better) game with at least two homers and six or more RBIs was Kevin Seitzer for the Royals in 1987. Seitzer went 6-for-6 with two homers and seven RBIs against the Red Sox.
Benintendi also collected five hits in a game earlier this season at Baltimore. He already has as many career five-hit games (two) as Miguel Cabrera. Or, if you prefer a more historical comparison, Benintendi has two more five-hit games than Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott and Barry Bonds had combined in their careers. None of those three players ever registered five hits in a major-league game.www.espn.com/blog/elias-says/post/_/id/1176/elias-says-july-5-2017 So, in back to back games, we've had two different players recognized for all round "career" type games, first w/ DP, on the 3rd, and, Benni, on the 4th! If you were putting someone down for a third in a row, who's most likely to go "career game", tonight?! (not to mention the Red Sox raining on the Independence Day celebration of two different countries, for the "Home" team, while on this road trip, in the same long weekend!)

Nice call, first inning in FL, 14 runs in June '03. I'd completely forgotten about it. Back in the olde days, the 50s but forget exactly which one, the Sox posted a 17 run inning v. The Tigers. IIRC TSW Caddy, Gene Stephens had three hits in that inning. www.baseballroundtable.com/three-hits-in-an-inning-a-rare-batting-feat/ (seems it is a "Red Sox only" feat, on the AL side, w you each naming the only two times it has occurred, in AL history)

Is Hanley wearing the helmet or is the helmet wearing Hanley? The existential question that propels us through life. I read these...I glanced at Guidas' avatar...I read the dialogue again...I smiled...perfect bunt...perfect bunt...perfect Blast... ...smile widened.

How exactly is chavis overrated? He's going to make the next top 100 prospects in mlb list, and right now is considered one of the best power hitters in all the minor leagues. He's got plus hit tool potential and has shown plus power already. He's also a very hard worker who will only get better because of his work ethic. Agree with what you are saying, BUT all his great stuff was done at A. If he shows the same stuff at AA in the second half of the season I will gladly rescind all the bad things I have said about him. fwiw, here's a snippet on Chavis, from Keith Law's blog, 6/22 - • Boston Red Sox third-base prospect Michael Chavis (who I ranked No. 14 in their system before the season) played through a hand injury last year that killed his numbers, but he's had a huge breakout year for High-A Salem so far and looks like he'll be able to justify the first-round pick Boston expended on him in 2014. Chavis' swing path hasn't changed much since high school but he is more balanced throughout and is quite a bit stronger, which you can see in his body and also in his bat control through contact. same blog, only other Sox prospect he commented on - • First baseman Josh Ockimey had a great first half in 2016, but he hit the wall around midyear and ended the season with disappointing numbers for a 21-year-old in Low-A in the Red Sox system. He's come out strong so far this year, but I think he might be feasting on off-speed stuff, as he was late on fastballs all game and was lunging at pitches off the plate. He's also a below-average defender at first. Ockimey has a good eye and will draw his walks, but I worry about his ability to make contact at higher levels if he can't show he can turn on velocity.

Who was the last Red Sox free agent to live up exactly to expectations? No more, no less. (though with the past week, Moreland prob slightly outperforming expectations) The name that popped into my head, was one on a larger scale - curious how close you would rate the Red Sox FA deal w/ Manny, to that standard?...

Now you want to throw strikes with a three run lead Barnes???!!! Man you're annoying. fwiw, if you weren't catching on NESN, Dave O'Brien brought up his severe Home (Superman) Road (< Clark Kent, if CK is "average"!) splits

From the very first replay, seemed Xander never even touched second, missing it w/ his feet, and didn't make an attempt w his base-side (lest) hand, no? That is not the rule. He simply has to be in position to touch the base and begin the slide in front of the base. Everyone remembers Machado's slide into Pedroia. Someone explain the difference in the slides other than Pedroia's injury from it and the fact that Pedroia was not looking at the runner unlike Simmons? www.si.com/mlb/2016/04/19/slide-rule-chase-utley-memoFor example, the memorandum explained one particular hard slide was legal (termed “a bona fide slide”) because the runner: • Began his slide prior to reaching the base. • Was able and attempted to reach base with his hand. • Appeared to be able to remain on the base. • Was within reach of base without changing his pathway. The memorandum also detailed examples of illegal slides. Some of those violations occurred because the runner: • Was not able to remain on the base. • Did not attempt to reach the base with his hand or foot.• Initiated illegal contact with the fielder by throwing his arm/upper body and contacting the fielder above the knee. • Did not begin his slide before the base. • Failed to attempt to remain on base after completion of the slide. • Was not within reach of the base without changing his pathway. • Changed his pathway in an attempt to contact the fielder rather than reach base safely.

They would have had to trade for Plouffe. The Rays traded for him before he was put on waivers. I could be wrong but didn't the Rays only trade a player or cash considerations and when that happens you're talking either minimal cash or a very fringe player? www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/plouftr01.shtml"June 17, 2017: Traded by the Oakland Athletics with cash to the Tampa Bay Rays for player to be named or cash." "2017 31 Oakland Athletics $5,250,000 5.162 $2M paid by Oakland Athletics"

Looking at that play at the plate, rolling it back, CV made a nice play there, as well, positioning his feet about as tight to the line as possible, w/o exposing himself to obstruction, receiving the ball well, and quick swipe tag, just getting enough...and on Altuve's part, as pointed out, getting a good jump, good turn, and great slide...
...a baseball thing of beauty, to watch, all around.
Now, let's button this one up, CK, and move on to KC.

Thought it was an aggressive play w two outs, to get into scoring position, where the defense executed well. (esp, as was noted, that JUp didn't play Pedroia's well) I was okay w that.
