Behind ESPN+ - an opinion/grading on every teams off-season to date (understanding there's still a bit of off season, yet ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ) www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/35630053/2022-2023-mlb-offseason-grades-all-30-teamsAdditions: OF Masataka Yoshida, RHP Corey Kluber, RHP Chris Martin, RHP Kenley Jansen, DH Justin Turner, SS Adalberto Mondesi, OF Adam Duvall Departures: SS Xander Bogaerts, RHP Nathan Eovaldi, DH J.D. Martinez, LHP Rich Hill, RHP Michael Wacha, OF Tommy Pham Who's No. 1 as season approaches? With the top free agents signed, here's where our experts think each team stands midway through the offseason. Midwinter power rankings » This might sound a little shocking, but it's possible Red Sox fans are overreacting. No executive has faced the wrath of their fan base this offseason more than Chaim Bloom. It's almost like Red Sox Nation has forgotten the team was in the American League Championship Series way back in ... 2021. I understand the frustration, primarily on letting Bogaerts walk, but the Red Sox did end up extending Rafael Devers and he's the better long-term play given their age difference. Without the Devers extension, this grade would have been lower, mostly because the rotation wasn't really addressed. Yoshida comes over from Japan on a $90 million deal, with the Red Sox betting he can sustain the high OBPs he posted in Japan (.449 in 2022 with 82 walks and 42 strikeouts). Many insiders think the Red Sox overpaid, but if he's getting on base 40% of the time, that will work, although his lack of speed and defense caps his ceiling. I'm also a little wary of Jansen, given the new pitch clock rules (he's been one of the slowest workers in the majors). Grade: C 10 TEAMS lower, including 3 Fs - Reds ChiSox Rockies - & Mets w sole A w/ NYY & PHI A-

Curious if anyone also compliments their soxprospects.com minor league prospect tracking w an MILBtv streaming subscription? (I usually hop on, early June, during their Father's Day promo, but may hop on earlier, this season)

www.mlb.com/news/top-100-prospects-hypotheticals?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage"In your best guess, who will be the top 3 prospects around this time in 2024? -- @mattherr07 It's likely that the first seven prospects on the new Top 100 will graduate to the big leagues this season, so next year's list should have a distinctly different look. The Orioles have had two recent No. 1 overall prospects in Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson, and shortstop Jackson Holliday will give them a third on our 2024 Top 100. The son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, Jackson had the best combination of hitting ability and all-around tools in the 2022 Draft, where Baltimore took him with the top pick. He should have solid to plus tools across the board, though that may be selling his bat and power a bit short. He looked like a future superstar in his pro debut, reaching Single-A at age 18 while batting .297/.489/.422 and walking more than twice as much as he struck out. I can't restrict myself to a top three, so I'm going to give you a top five. Behind Holliday, the next-best prospects in baseball a year from now will be Chourio, Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer and a pair of Diamondbacks, outfielder Druw Jones and shortstop Jordan Lawlar."

www.mlb.com/news/top-prospects-in-2025?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage"Back in August 2021, we predicted who would be each farm system’s No. 1 prospect entering 2023. Well, the time has come to review our work. Generally, we did pretty well. Gunnar Henderson (Orioles), Francisco Álvarez (Mets), Jordan Walker (Cardinals), Anthony Volpe (Yankees) and Marcelo Mayer (Red Sox) were our selections then, and now they head into this season in the Top 10 of MLB Pipeline’s overall rankings. Similarly, we were on point about Diego Cartaya (Dodgers), Jackson Jobe (Tigers), Colson Montgomery (White Sox) and Tyler Soderstrom (Athletics). Some picks were more complicated. Michael Harris II (Braves) has graduated and won a Rookie of the Year Award. Robert Hassell III (Padres) was traded to the Nationals. Top 2021 picks like Henry Davis (Pirates), Jack Leiter (Rangers) and Kahlil Watson (Marlins) have seen their stocks slip. It isn’t easy, this prospect prediction business. ..."

www.mlb.com/news/best-prospects-not-on-top-100-list-2023?t=mlb-pipeline-coverageRed Sox: Mikey Romero, SS/2B The Red Sox have selected California high school middle infielders with their last three first-round picks, including Romero last July. He had some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the prep class, plays a smooth shortstop with advanced instincts and hit .304/.368/.506 in his 19-game pro debut between Rookie ball and Single-A.

Where in history has a 6 man rotation been tried successfully ? as near as I could find, LA Dodgers, this season, where they utilized the shortened DL rules to help manage SP innings & starts, ending up with 6 SPs with 20 or more starts & a 7th w 15 starts, reaching the WS. Not literally using a 6 man rotation, but, the end result of spreading out the starts across a 7 man core of SPs. www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAD/2018.shtml

Way too different way to Evaluate the Front Office and Ownership? Snapshot www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/35517018/way-too-early-2023-mlb-lineup-rankings"24. Boston Red Sox 1. Masataka Yoshida (LF, L) 2. Enrique Hernandez (SS, R) 3. Rafael Devers (3B, L) 4. Justin Turner (DH, R) 5. Alex Verdugo (RF, L) 6. Adam Duvall (CF, R) 7. Triston Casas (1B, L) 8. Adalberto Mondesi (2B, R) 9. Reese McGuire (C, L) Park-neutral runs: 670 Best traits: contact, strike-zone command | Worst traits: BABIP, speed Why Rafael Devers -- and not Betts or Bogaerts? Red Sox fans have seen two homegrown stars leave in recent years, but that won't happen a third time. Making sense of Boston's investment » Is Devers worth $331 million? » This is kind of a grim outlook for the Boston offense, one dragged down by a No. 28 ranking in BABIP. I'm not sure I love that conclusion, but with below-average long ball potential and a so-so outlook in the patience category, a middling outlook is really about the best you can do from a forecast standpoint. One of the areas of uncertainty is Yoshida, who the projections see as a strike zone discipline master but a little lagging when it comes to a BABIP that you'd expect will trend to elite -- if he's for real and translates his game to MLB. If he's the player the Red Sox signed him to be, he'll be elite in BABIP. Anyway, if you don't like this park-neutral projection for the Boston offense, consider this: Last year, the Red Sox scored 343 runs on the road. If you think of that as a half-season of a park-neutral performance, then double it to get a full-season projection. That's 686, and Boston lost Martinez and Bogaerts."

...a bit surprised...#2 being issued to Turner I don’t get sentimental attachment to ex-player numbers. It’s not like #2 is going to be retired any time soon… Not sentiment, just surprised, not thinking it'd be that quick a turn, though I suppose options limited.
Me either, on retirement, anytime soon, though, up til about April 2022 or so, thought this one might have a shot, 8-10 or so years out!
Three Sox players, my lifetime, I think about most, wearing that number, when I see it, fwiw = X + Remy + Mike Andrews (who turns "80" this summer!!)

Turner having 1 good year and opting out might work out fine. If Niko Kavadas figures out AA reasonably quickly he could move up to Worcester and be in line to be the DH at age 25, so the timeline could sync up leaving the 2024 DH spot available for Kavadas if he destroys minor league pitching in 2023 like he did in 2022. he got a nice write up, other day over at MILB www.milb.com/news/kavadas-crushes

Interesting...and, I've been wondering what the nuanced advantages might have been built into the language, that might serve some payroll management purpose, especially the $20M signing bonus...perhaps respective handling of which, might account, in some way for the deltas?
