I think people inside baseball know the difference between these two. JF is a baseball junkie and clearly doesn't want to waste any more years at that Miami circus. Puig is a manchild, with a great deal of maturity required. Other than throwing at an opponents head, JF does not hurt his team on the field the way Puig does. It could be argued that saying your agent will dictate your innings pitched limit is, in fact, hurting the team. Basically, he's saying "There's one set of rules for everyone else on the team...And then there's a whole other set of rules for me, as decided by my agent." Ehh... I don't see it as different rules. Every TJ doctor suggests yearly timelines of ramping up innings. When it comes to health player and agent have to look out for themselves.

DD listing Buch as our second starter on the radio today makes me think he's not actively imagining any scenarios where he trades him. Could change, but pretty telling. Can't ever take to the bank anything a GM says this time of year. A lot can change in the next few months. Pretty sure if we sign Greinke or Price they will be looking to create payroll space. Buch/Miley/Porcello. One of them would probably be on the move. Yeahhh... I just don't think Buch would be moved for payroll. They're geared up to be way over the luxury tax, and Buch is gone after this year anyway. I'm not saying they won't move him, just saying if they do it'll be to open up a rotation spot while protecting longer term assets like Miley/Kelly.

Jose wants out of Miami so bad haha Unfortunately, I think it's simply a matter of him losing perspective. The more he opens his mouth, the more it appears he's the pitching version of Yasiel Puig. Yeah, I mean his attitude doesn't sound great based on the reports. It's unprofessional and all that, but on the flip side I look at the Marlins and think of them as a horrific unprofessional team themselves. So I can't really blame him. I'd want out as well. The diva is still a bit off-putting though.

Except you're not using anything Dave Stewart actually said. You're just making up random quotes. I'm also a little shocked you aren't recognizing hyperbole. “I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m just not in the mood to give up three or four players for one guy at the back end of my bullpen,” That's the quote. You implied that it's good that we made the Kimbrel trade because the guy who said that was caught with a prostitute. That's not hyperbole. I'm not even sure what it is other than insane. The point thursty made about it is that it's amazing that Dave Stewart actually sounded like the smart one when he's one of the worst GMs in baseball and you went in some really strange direction with it. But congrats on making this thread even more ridiculous. Where do you live? Maybe I can google and find you a local class on recognizing hyperbole. They probably also have ones on lightening up.

Just remember with Buchholz, it has always taken him awhile to get his mechanics back after an injury for whatever reason. This could be the first time he doesn't, but I wouldn't count on him being the 3 win pitcher in a half season he was last year. I'm sure other teams have noticed that also so I wouldn't expect a lot in a trade. They definitely would be selling low on him IMO. The problem with Buchholz is that you don't want to trade him when he's good because he's too good, but it's also hard to trade him when he's not good or just injured. Good sum up. He makes me want to bang my head against a wall, but I'm short enough brain cells. DD listing Buch as our second starter on the radio today makes me think he's not actively imagining any scenarios where he trades him. Could change, but pretty telling.

Probably best they're going the opposite direction of a GM of a bad team whose crack judgement once had him arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Huh? I rated the Kimbrel trade a 3 in the official thread. I "like" the trade, but it has nothing to do with Dave Stewart. I just think Dave Stewart is generally not a good GM. This entire ridiculous sub-topic was based on your quoted comment above. That you want to do the opposite of Dave Stewart because his judgement is so bad, because of hiring a prostitute. So either let it die or explain why we should always do the opposite of what Dave Stewart says. That's where my question about Betts and Bogaerts came from, because it's your logic. Except you're not using anything Dave Stewart actually said. You're just making up random quotes. I'm also a little shocked you aren't recognizing hyperbole.

Well, the problem was that Miley was their second-best starting pitcher last year, which indeed is not what you want. Despite that, contrary to popular belief, the rotation was not that big of a weakness by the end of the year. The rotation ranked 15th in adjusted ERA and 12th in adjusted FIP in 2015, which is decent enough. The bigger issue was one of the worst bullpens in the league, below-average defense, and mediocre offense. Pretty much everything went sideways May-July. Team tightened up quite a bit for the final two months.

So is this why you think the Kimbrell trade was a good one? If not, why did you imply that? What if Dave Stewart said that trading Betts and Bogaerts for CC Sabathia would be a stupid move? Maybe he would have liked the trade even more if there had been a PTBNL - a "Prostitute To Be Named Later." ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Stewart probably would have went for a trade if it had a prostitute in it

You don't seem to quite grasp my point. Think it's a reading comprehension thing. I'm saying bad judgement is bad judgement. And I'm not going to trust a guy who uses that poor of judgement. And no I would not argue prostitution should be legalized, it's a very destructive industry that marginalizes a lot of demographics and people. Stewart has also tried to acquire Kimbrel in the past. Padres asked for Goldschmidt + more. In a rather unprofessional move Stewart discussed the trade publicly and lambasted the asking price, saying something to the effect of he'd have to be on drugs to do that deal. These type of actions don't exactly make you friends with other GMs.

I think being an dope with bad judgement isn't a mindset that all of a sudden stops at a your high-risk job. Let's follow the reasoning here...The man likes women and paid for consensual sex with one...A "crime" that many would argue should be legalized...Therefore he is a dope incapable of handling a high-risk high reward job...Yeah, that makes sense. ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) You don't seem to quite grasp my point. Do you really think Dave Stewart's judgment on prostitutes has any connection to his judgment on trading for closers? Actually it could, in a weird way. There's no question this is somewhat of a risky move for Boston to give up that much for a reliever coming off a (for him) down year, no matter how good he's been in the past. If Dave Stewart does indeed like to engage in what is a very risky behavior (on multiple fronts) and even HE is saying it's too much of a risk, it might be worth listening to.
I think the most dangerous thing about being a GM is being inflexible. Sox got into hot water with their ethos of writing off a large chunk of the FA and trade markets because of age of starting pitchers. There's plenty of productive guys out there the Sox, in recent years, have written off. And we've responded by overextending ourselves with guys like Hanley and Pablo, who had very obvious red flags. So, it just hits me that any declarative statement of "will do", and "won't do", that results in foregoing context of current position or need, is not a great sign that your GM is working well or has the adaptability that might be needed. Guys convince themselves of these self-imposed restrictions (and conversely, abilities), and it's that myopic mindset that sometimes lends itself to bad choices.

And Storen only has 1 year of control left. And he is upset being a setup guy.... wouldn't he just be disgruntled here?? Yep. Control was paramount for Kimbrel deal. I don't think they'd even look to Storen unless it's for super cheap.

Is it really necessary to bring prostitution into the discussion? Good grief. Absolutely. You seemed pretty impressed by his little quote, and I just wanted to let you know that even Dave Stewart can, at times, make some really dumb judgements.

That video worries me some. Hasn't anyone told him about how Hanley Ramirez lifted himself to becoming LESS of an athlete? Moncada is a middle infielder. Middle infielders need flexibility and quick reflexes.....not huge muscles. Yoan was already ripped and filled out last year. Adding anymore size could actually hamper his upcoming season. Anything that may take away from his speed, base running, and defense is not in his best interest. I'm sure each prospect is given exercises and guidelines for their off season workouts. I hope someone is staying in touch and even supervising his routines. haha relax. And there's little to no chance Moncada sticks at 2nd. He's likely to move to a corner infield spot or the OF.

They aren't at this time and have been aggressive so I expect that to continue. DD has a history or being aggressive with guys (Porcello), so I'm not expecting an issue. I don't understand what "wasting" his bullets means? He's under control for the same amount of time whether it starts at 19 or 23. I'd honestly prefer his body matures as much as possible before he comes up.

When's the last time a contending team traded away a mid-rotation starter at the deadline? Well, if they add a starter at the deadline, or someone gets injured and comes back but someone younger has been lights out in their place for 2 months, etc.

It's been reported multiple times that he doesn't want to relieve and that he wants to be a starter. I wish the Sox could have gotten him to return, but it was never ever ever ever a fit unless no one else gave him the chance to start. Schilling tweets: "This'll come back to bit[e] Sox" which makes no sense, then again, when does Schilling ever make much sense on twitter. It's certainly a fit. All you would have had to do was say "We'll guarantee you a spot in the rotation (if healthy)" and write him a check. And then trade Wade Miley for someone really good.* He was worth $8.8M last year by fWAR and $12.8M by bWAR. And he started just four games. You have to like your chances of getting your money's worth, no?Assuming that Joe Kelly is Buchholz's injury caddy in either case, and that instead of trading Miley for a reliever, you sign someone just as good, this is the equation you have to solve: -- The value of X starts by Rich Hill and (32-X) starts by Steven Wright (including the .30 points he knocks off the ERA of the next game's pitcher, if facing the same team) -- The salary savings, Miley versus Hill, and FA reliever vs traded-for reliever versus -- The value of 32 starts by Miley -- The value of an unknown number of starts by Wright versus starts by Owens or Johnson (since you are now likelier to be going deeper into the depth chart) I'll take the rotation with Hill and Wright over Miley big time, I'll take the young cost-controlled relief stud with 4 years of control you can get from any sabermetrically-oriented team for Miley over the expensive declining FA you'd be signing instead, and I'll use the saved money elsewhere, and I think all of that blows away the downside of any likely number of starts made by Owens / Johnson that would have been Wright (or Kelly) starts had we kept Miley. *Billy Beane wasn't in a position to guarantee Hill a rotation spot, either, but he signed him and immediately traded his 5th starter, Jesse Chavez, who was a year away from free agency and isn't as good as Miley, for a good reliever, Liam Hendricks, with four years of control. I don't see how Rich Hill is a fit for the Sox. The would need much stronger 1/2 guys and some really nice depth pieces. Hill + Buchholz + Kelly reads like you'll need 3 starters before June

All I know is they should push him hard if he's dominating. There is no reason to waste a pitchers bullets in he minors. Some guys are just that good that they should be in MLB at 19/20/21 and we see that more and more post steroid era. Who the heck knows how high he can pitch at right now bc he's dominated the lower levels he's been at. If he looks great in ST then I think Salem is the right placement and then if the weather warms and he's dominating then he should jump right to Portland. But getting ahead of things even talking like that. The point is he's the type of guy you don't put time lines on. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Fenway in 2017. How would they be "wasting his bullets in the minors"?
