It sounds like Margot and Guerra are being flipped for Carrasco with another few guys thrown in. Uh oh

Storen also wants to close, and 2 of his last 3 years have been seasons you do not want from a high leverage reliever.
And I don't think the Sox want to touch Papelbon with a 10 foot pole.
I don't see either as guys the Red Sox really considered.

To be fair, an NL team with an incumbent first baseman should probably not want Hanley for $11m a year. They probably also think the Sox can give them 75% at this point

Virtually every piece of available evidence points the Red Sox in the direction of the top of the free-agent market – David Price, Zack Greinke, maybe Johnny Cueto even as every mention of him to Red Sox officials elicits disbelief at how much money he’ll make, maybe Jordan Zimmermann even though, as Dave Cameron of Fangraphs notes, the righthander could represent one of the most overpriced free agents of this offseason. In short, there will be no comfortable answers for the Red Sox as they move forward – and certainly no answers that come without their own host of questions. www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/11/23/free-agency-likely-avenue-for-red-sox-address-rotation/Yvtzs8dCZ5oaGOntc5KnGK/story.htmlI am sooooo comfortable going 7/215 for Price or 5/165 for Greinke haha. Save our youngsters down on the farm, take some pressure off Buch and Porcello, and get a really good guy to take Owens/Erod under their wing, and the only thing that hurts is John Henry's checkbook? Sign me up. I'm paying 15 dollars for a 12 oz of sam adams sitting in a tiny seat facing left field instead of home plate with a rusty nail digging into my leg regardless.

I don't see the problem in this. You see it in other fields that deal with talent and use agents. The power agents only rep the name talent or the talent they think will be big names. It's all a business. Sports are businesses with very short career spans for players. I have zero issue with these guys chasing the top dollar if that's what they really want, especially when they are being paid by billionaires and corporations. It's rare to find a player who will take a discount during his prime to go to the team that gives him the best opportunity to win. You and I say, "What's a few million less a year when you're talking 7 or 8 figure annual salaries?" and I'm sure we'd all have that perspective. Then again, these are almost always guys who have been the best or among the best at every level, so they don't often have a fan's perspective. They've been blessed with natural gifts and have been rewarded for these gifts in some way probably since they were 9 or 10 years old, so seeing more money to them usually equals a validation of their overall excellence. That's their perspective, or so I've been told. Would that we were all so gifted. I only brought it up because it was implied that we should be rooting for Boras, not for the evil corporate owners. I said that's not a real choice because I root for the cheaper players to get enough money to retire on and for the minor league players to not be treated like slaves. There is way more than enough money for everyone, but Boras is only trying to expand the $200 million contracts to a half billion, because that's what will make him the most money. No one is looking out for the little people in baseball, just like how it works in real life. I really hope the minimum salary is doubled in the next CBA and that they expand rosters to 26 and add the DH to the NL. But that's all money taken from the owners and not given to the star players, so I really doubt it happens. There are at least 3 sides in this battle, and only 2 of them are represented. Gosh the reading comprehension is terrible on this site. I never said root for Boras. Ever. If you choose to read things horrifically wrong, I can't help you with that.

haha no he doesn't. And he is trying to get revenue splits back to favoring the players. And he fights hard for his players stuck in the minors to get up to the ML level, like Ozuna who was screwed by the Marlins. He's working for the star players and that's about it. If they aren't stars, they probably were supposed to be at some point. umm... and?

I can see that too. His loyalty lies with the players and himself for sure. My general point was that team ownerships are big evil machines. To expand further, Boras has the power and ability to change the way teams pay minor league players so they're not living in poverty anymore. But he doesn't because there isn't any money involved for him. He's hardly a crusader for the poor and downtrodden. haha no he doesn't. And he is trying to get revenue splits back to favoring the players. And he fights hard for his players stuck in the minors to get up to the ML level, like Ozuna who was screwed by the Marlins.

This is getting tiring. He's not a max effort guy, let it go. He did in the offseason put in the work to add 15-20 pounds of muscle. Impressive. No one complained about him before he jacked up his shoulder. Downplaying the shoulder injury is pretty nuts. Let's go **** all over the guy for doing exactly what we want him to do by putting in effort in the offseason. God we're a miserable bunch. He didn't work on defense in LF in the offseason. He barely worked on it in preseason. He barely worked on it during the season other than in games. The entire coaching staff was fed up with his lack of effort on working on defense. So he cares about working out great. But we're trying to win baseball games, not a bodybuilding competition. I don't know what the hell the Red Sox told him after he signed but it was either nothing or it was ignored. I never saw those reports about Sox coaching staff sounding off about Hanley. Would love to read those links. I also think the Sox handled it poorly if they didn't give him any offseason plans and what not.

Boras is all about himself, just like the owners. He does what he has to do to make the most possible money, just like the owners. There is no side to pick. I can see that too. His loyalty lies with the players and himself for sure. My general point was that team ownerships are big evil machines.

Look, I'm not going to base what Hanley can do around another player. For every A-Rod (who's old and has hip conditions) there are a myriad of guys who have made the move. I'm not saying he'll be great, I'm just willing to see what happens. Could be a disaster, could be passable. Mike Napoli ended up being an asset over there, and that was wildly different footwork. And Fangraphs even rated Napoli as a below average defender in 2014, and to be honest, I didn't notice at the time. I think it's all kind of moot because I think they're in wait and see mode with him. They don't want to eat 80% of his contract, especially with Ortiz retiring, so they're probably fine with seeing what he does. Him going off and playing winter ball is a good start. Honestly didn't see that coming. I guess the difference is that Arod used to be an elite defensive SS and that didn't make him look comfortable at 1B. Yeah I get that he had a year off and was 40, but he doesn't move any more slowly than Hanley from my eye test. Best hope is that Hanley kills it in the gym this winter and shows up fast and flexible in the spring instead of like an actual bodybuilder who can't move because his muscles are too big. Seriously, I bet Papi would be a better 1B if he could play the field without wearing down. Yeah hopefully he gets in a good groove. I think reps are important, so it's great to see him getting a bunch before spring, especially when they won't be televised or hugely reported down there in the dominican. I think Hanley definitely has an effort problem, but I think it's partly because he's kinda soft. I don't really have much to go on, but his body language just sometimes sorta looked like a guy who knew he sucked at left field, and just kinda shut down. Getting him going early on 1st and gaining some confidence is good. Just think it's a great sign he was for it, because it goes heavily against the narrative about his character. Him giving up his offseason is about as good of sign as we can get right now.

And Fangraphs even rated Napoli as a below average defender in 2014, and to be honest, I didn't notice at the time. Nit-pick-- both UZR (which is the defensive rating that Fangraphs uses) and DRS (which is the defensive rating that B-R uses) rated Napoli as an above-average defender at 1B in 2014. You're probably looking at the "Def" stat, which combines UZR (i.e., how good a certain player was at his given position) and the positional adjustment (i.e., how defensively challenging a player's defensive position was). Yep, I don't think defensive metrics really tell the whole picture ever. That's just one I see that sometimes gives a good overall estimation, but I definitely see it as limited. UZR also doesn't factor in shifts and all that so it's all a little bit of a crapshoot.

Enrique Rojas reports Hanley is set to play winter ball in dominican to gear up for playing 1st base I guess humiliation is the only motivation to work harder for some people. Yay? Let's see what he does. He wasn't *atrocious* (according to fangraphs def rating) at 3rd in 2013 and 2014, and generally 3b's move across the diamond when they suck defensively. At least first will be using a skill set he's been working on his entire career. I just remember ARod playing 1B in preseason last spring and saw just how terrible he was. The Yankees were planning on him playing there at times during the season. He ended up playing 9 2/3 innings at 1B and didn't make it through them without committing an error. There is a lot of footwork involved at 1B which is not natural for a SS or 3B. He doesn't exactly move like a ballerina. I am expecting a disaster again. I don't really understand why anyone is comfortable with Hanley learning anything new in the field and being ok at it after last season. Where was that article that said no gm's asked would take Hanley at a 50% discount? Look, I'm not going to base what Hanley can do around another player. For every A-Rod (who's old and has hip conditions) there are a myriad of guys who have made the move. I'm not saying he'll be great, I'm just willing to see what happens. You are really freaking amazing at typing out sentences people haven't typed, and then attributing those made up sentences to them. You'd make an absolutely horrific journalist.
I don't see Boras as evil in any way. He fights for the player to maximize their earnings and for teams to be respectful of their health concerns. We, the fans, being general mindless peons, think of him as evil because our favorite players play for peanuts (yes, peanuts, the amount of revenue they generate is insane) and then they leave in Free Agency to higher bidders, and we get butthurt because we're immature babies who are unable to grasp that this is a career and a way to earn money. Our wittle feewings get hurt when big bad Boras does a good job at setting up his player and his family for life.

Best case scenario is a deal like Scherzer with Price. That'd still make me nervous though. 100 million of the contract will be paid out for coaching Owens and Erod on how to be better lefties.

Players have little to say, until FA, about where and how they play or make. Their contract is owned by the team and it favors ownership. I'm OK with that. Wherever I have worked and in whatever capacity, i had to do what the boss wants, as we all do, no matter how stupid or detrimental to the company. The ideal relationship between owner and worker/boss and worker is one of participation and mutual respect, because such relatiionships work. Notwithstanding, If I gave orders to the boss I would get fired. IMO relationships with coaches and managers, who are mentors and bosses, are fairly collegial these days. This is effective. That said, no matter how collegial, or how well a player is paid, fed, trained and respected, he is not the boss/owner. As long as that boss/owner isn't being abusive, it's his team and has the say, at least insofar as the Players Association agree. The Players Association, not the freaking agent. You can bet, given an opportunity, Boras would gladly sit in the dugout and turn whatever situation occurs to the advantage of his client, as well as to himself. He is already doing this from the sidelines and through the media. His business is as grubby and personally avaricious as any element in the business of baseball. Perhaps more than most. That's what he's paid to do haha. Boras is not some evil corporation. THE TEAMS ARE THE EVIL MONEY-GRUBBING CORPORATIONS. You guys are absolutely brainwashed. Fenway Park you pay 15 cents more per oz of beer than the next closest stadium. 25 cents more than league average PER OZ. Not per beer. Per-freakin-oz. They've sold you RUBBLE. Their personalized bricks are NOTHING MORE THAN RUBBLE. We gladly pay for infield DIRT. We buy FREAKING DIRT for TOP DOLLAR. Players are ready to play in the big leagues, and they're left to ROT in the minors to delay service time and arbitration clocks. The Marlins do this with players WHEN THE BIG LEAGUE TEAM IS STRUGGLING AND WOULD BENEFIT BY HAVING THEM COME UP. Holland gives his elbow ligament to the team, fights through and they decline his last year option. I will never understand why we as fans buy into the "you poor franchise, that evil player is spurning you!" storyline. We should be identifying with the players, not the giant omniscient global brands. We look at a guy making 20 million dollars a year and we think it's crazy, because the owners don't publicize how much THEY'RE making off you.

I think people often forget how important first base defense is until it's gone. His poor defense may show up more in the other defenders than himself Let's see what he does. Or you know, the guy also may want to still be pitching when he is 30. Players should have the ability to make decisions that may impact their careers, life earnings, and health. So you'd be cool with JBJ saying he doesn't want to steal bases or leap to make a catch against a wall because his agent Scott Boras has advised him it could impact his career, life earnings and health? Seriously, at what point does what you are prescribing - agent interference in actual game play - cross the line? Or, are we to understand that you'd actually prefer the agent to be in the dugout, making game decisions alongside the manager? I'd be 100% okay with it if it was his doctor's orders. 100%. I'm not sure what injury a position player would undergo that would follow similar guidelines, but it's gravy by me. The last thing we need is JBJ jacking up his knee and his defense suffering so he's completely useless for the last 3-5 years of his deal. And who said Boras would be in the dugout? He said Boras and his docs would be involved, i.e. a hard innings cap. The team knows going into the year, it's their problem if they don't plan accordingly.

It's actually not that crazy of statement. The Marlins are a horrible horrible horrible organization. If I was Jose Fernandez I would lay out an innings limit, and count down the days until my free agency There must be a generational divide going on here. The notion of quitting on your teammates because you're unhappy with your employer is anathema to everything long time fans of the sport hold sacred about baseball. But hey, whatever floats your boat, right? It's not quitting, it's being responsible and following doctor's orders. Your doctor tells you something, you follow. You do not owe the Marlins anything past the elbow ligament you've already given them. Especially considering the way they treat their young players. And long time fans of baseball, in that case, are unrealistic and naive. Baseball is a big, evil, money-grubbing sport. Players forego education and normal career paths. We, as fans, are idiotic if we demand they treat it as anything but. This is their career, their livelihood, a way to set themselves up for life. No need to blow a second elbow ligament for a team who refuses to spend money to have depth to cover your absence when you shut down your season for health reasons.

Yeahhh... I just don't think Buch would be moved for payroll. They're geared up to be way over the luxury tax, and Buch is gone after this year anyway. I'm not saying they won't move him, just saying if they do it'll be to open up a rotation spot while protecting longer term assets like Miley/Kelly. There are two team options on Clay, not one, both low cost: 2016 Team Option: $13M ($0.2M buyout) 2017 Team Option: $13.5M ($0.5M buyout) Oh that's right. Well still, they can always let him go next year.
