Rough game for the Sox in Salem. Offense did next to nothing. Four singles including a bloop that barely fell in and an infield roller. Nothing really to highlight there. Coffey, Garcia, and Castro had some hard contact. Defensively, Ravelo is as advertised and Jhostynxon Garcia climbed the wall in left center for an excellent catch.
Brannon went 1-4 including a strikeout to end the game with the bases loaded. The single was a hard grounder between short and third. Had an insanely wide setup with two strikes in the ninth. Behind the plate, I saw good and bad. He did a good job at blocking balls in the dirt, but also dropped a couple easy ones. I didn’t have a good angle on him, but his framing didn’t look amazing. He had a situation where he handled his pitcher well. Marquez Johnson thought he had strike three on two pitches in a row and he was visibly frustrated. Brannon ran (sprinted) out and calmed him down and they got the guy swinging on the very next pitch.
Pitching was kind of interesting after Dean. I saw Luis De La Rosa for the first time. Kind of a funky delivery where he stabs the ball back and then whips it forward. All arm. I’d think that would look disconcerting from the batters box. Velocity was low: 88-89, topping out at 90 with the fastball. I really liked his slider though. High 70s-low 80s and was giving righties problems. Saw several guys tense up like it was going to hit them, only for it to fall in for a strike and he was also able to get them to chase it outside. With his delivery, I don’t see a starter and with that velocity he’s gonna have to be perfect with his command as a reliever.
Nathanael Cruz was interesting too. Fastball was sitting around 93-94 but he definitely had the most success with his curveball. Got more than a few swinging strikes with it.

Noah Dean somehow managed to escape with no runs. Managed to walk 6 batters in only 1.2 innings. Escaped thanks to a nice double play by Ravelo at 3rd and a pickoff. Fastball 93-94-couldn’t land it at all. Mid-80s changeup looked like his best pitch. Curveball was up and down (pun intended). Sometimes could land it and sometimes couldn’t. Mostly in the high 70s but threw a handful that were 74-75.
Not a good start, but he’s definitely a reliever down the line. Might need the Wyatt Olds treatment if he can’t learn to throw a strike though.

Juan Chacon is leaving the game with a left wrist/hand injury. Fouled off a pitch and called the trainers out. Tried to stay in the game but after a few practice swings, he walked off.

Brooks Brannon will be making his Salem debut tonight. Batting 8th and catching.

Don’t look now but Wyatt Olds has thrown four innings without a walk, wild pitch, or a hit batsman.

Projected Salem rotation looks to be
Wednesday: Paez Thursday: Dean Friday: ERC Saturday: Ramirez Sunday: Perales Monday: Monegro
Does this look right? I’ll be hitting most of the games this week and want to see who I’ll be seeing.

Watch Monegro go from unranked to a top 20 prospect this season.
He’s off to as good of a start as you can reasonably imagine.
20 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 31 Ks. 0.90 ERA, 0.55 WHIP, .106 BAA. Just absolute excellence to start the year.

First “major” trade of the season (unless I’m forgetting something). Mets traded Eduardo Escobar to the Angels for two AA starting pitchers. For a struggling vet with a team option for next year, the Mets got two top 20 prospects from the Angels system. The Angels are obviously in win-now mode and have injuries that Escobar will help with, but that seems like an overpay.

Corey Rosier up to Worcester. Gotta feel for Tyler Dearden. Gets promoted to AAA for the first time but then sent back down before you make your debut. Then another outfielder gets promoted instead of you when the AAA team needs some reinforcements. Good for Rosier, though. He’s definitely earned it.

Shane Drohan’s first 2 AAA starts: 7.2 IP, 10 H, 10 ER, 6 BB, 7 Ks. 11.73 ERA, 2.08 WHIP, 4.69 HR/9.
His last 4: 22.2 IP, 17 H, 8 ER, 14 BB, 20 Ks. 3.18 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 1.56 HR/9.
In his past four starts, his walks have decreased in every start and his Ks have increased. Progress has definitely been made.

Loving these aggressive promotions! Give it another couple of weeks to a month and Bastardo, Wikelman, and Perales need one too.

Cespedes with another extra base hit-this one a two run double in the first. Now has 8 XBHs to only 6 Ks. He’s only walked three times in 44 PAs but I wonder if that’s just because he’s hitting every good pitch they throw him.

Enmanuel Valdez was in the original Worcester lineup and scratched. No explanation yet.
Bonaci back with Greenville after being activated off the IL.

Jordan should be in Portland sooner rather than later. He’s up over 300 ABs in High-A so it’s not like he’s been rushed through the level and he’s excelled both last year and this one. Up to a .317 average with an .898 OPS. More importantly he’s cut his K rate from an acceptable 25% last year to an excellent 15% this year. The power is starting to show more lately. There’s a logjam of corner infield prospects in Portland with Kavadas, Meidroth, Lugo, and Binelas seeing time there. He’s still young so there’s no need to rush, but he’s been killing it.

I hadn’t noticed this last week but Fraymi De Leon is getting time in center field now. He played his first game there this past Saturday and is back there today.
