Don't forget Shohei Otani may be posted this off season. I hope I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure this is not true. Doesn't have have to pitch like four more years in NPB to be eligible? For one thing I'm pretty sure we'd already have a 20 page thread about it on this board.

Yeah, the media will tell you they love a guy who speaks his mind, just like lions love a gazelle who is brave enough to wander into their den.

You asked what the probability of it happening in the next several years is. The probability is zero. I'm not being snarky, I'm being realistic. And I purposely didn't direct it specifically at you.

Please god no.
I also don't buy the whole "He's targeted him before" thing, as if it's some big secret that David Price is a great pitcher. And trading a few assets for 1.5 years of David Price's prime is not in the same stratosphere as giving him free agent mega deal through his decline years.

If anyone seriously thinks we're going to see robot umps before Christian Vazquez retires, let alone before our six years of control on him/Blake are up, you're delusional.

If he can be the centerpiece of a deal for a young, cost-controlled front of the rotation pitcher, then yes, I would. I like Swihart, and the bar is so low for catchers, but I've always felt he's a bit overrated. More of an average regular than a star. You don't just give those guys away but I'm willing to bet on Vazquez if we can use Swihart to fill our biggest need.

So when do we call up Espinoza to Salem to make his last start?

I'm not saying Dombrowski, coming from Detroit, should be intimately familiar with every player in our organization, but....isn't it kinda a GM's job to know the other 29 teams really well? Or at least their top prospects? Maybe DD is just playing coy with the media but based on his comments he was barely even aware of guys like ERod and JBJ who have been IN the majors. Like, if you're a GM in baseball in 2015 you shouldn't have to have someone tell you that Eduardo Rodriguez is really good like he's some teenager in rookie ball.
I realize when trades happen even the smartest GMs rely on their pro scouting departments and the like to give them names of guys to target but, I'd be stunned if Ben Cherington, for example, couldn't name off the top of his head at least a few guys from every single team who would be of interest. DD comes across more as your grandpa who only watches/cares about his teams' games.

Espinoza taken out with 1 out in the 4th due to pitch count. Bad defense/luck in this one.

I don't come here to fight. Let me state it with much more precision so that there can be no confusion. I think projecting Espinoza to be in the majors at 19 or 20 years old would be a major mistake. We should give this young person much more time to fine tune their off speed stuff. They're going to move him up fast enough to be challenged because he hasn't been yet all season. If he's still dominating and makes it to AAA next year, he'll go to the majors to finish developing in 2017. You don't develop offspeed pitches when no one can hit anything you throw. You actually need to struggle to develop. Yeah I'm with you but there's no way he's going to get to AAA next year.

Who is advocating to bring him to the big leagues in less than two years. You said when he will be 20 ( 2 years and 7 months from now ) when you expected him to reach the majors and ianrs said 19. I hate to break it to you but generally a person is 19 for a whole year, so if he's called up exactly two years from now, he'll be...wait for it....19! So, you're fighting a straw man. No one said to call him up in less than two years.

.and it's Mr. Anderson...or Neo to the rest of us. Yeah, we're not gonna top this, guys. He is The One. WRT to Buccholz, we're sort of splitting hairs, and he certainly had the ceiling of a legit ace, but based on Manuel and some other comments I've read Espinoza is seen as being potentially more special than that, a generational type (like the pitching version of Harper, to put it one way). Again, just strictly talking ceiling, with all the caveats about how far away/risky he is a given.

Yeah I'm fine with keeping him at 2/3 for awhile. But I don't think he's as far away as we're making it sound. Assuming health, I'd set the over/under at age 20 for him reaching MLB.

John Manuel @johnmanuelba Talked to 2 #RedSox scouts in last 3 days about Espinoza; their attempts to temper enthusiasm always fails. He sounds too good to be true Followed that up by comping him to Felix Hernandez and then said: "John Manuel @johnmanuelba 12m12 minutes ago khevey6 The comps I get when I ask scouts are too lofty to repeat responsibly."

Also seems inevitable that every young pitching star has to sustain and recover from a serious injury these days. Guys, relax with this. He's 17. We have two or three years to solve pitcher injuries .

There just haven't been enough eyes on him yet, as someone alluded to upthread. Not a lot of these prospect nerds (I say that as a term of endearment) get down to the GCL. The ones that have seen him, like BA, are gushing. By this time next year I suspect the hype will have really blown up.
