Why does mlb limit signings after 10 rounds to 100k not counting to the cap? Is that to help small market teams? After agent fees and taxes, the kid is not really getting much at all if he signs for 100k (certainly not the amount he would get in value from a scholarship). 200k seems like a much more reasonable number. To help every team that doesn't like to spend more money than they have to. Same reason Walmart doesn't want the minimum wage raised while the heirs have a combined net worth of several hundred billion dollars. Oh spare me the tear jerker.. Same reason you don't want to pay 2.00 for that same loaf of wal mart branded bread, because the CO's are going to take that cut regardless.

I'm no expert, but when I look at the top 10 picks, I'd guess the Red Sox don't have much extra money to spend on these next thirty. Good news is they drafted Groome, and have found value at <=$100k signings before. Kyri Washington, tho body wise he resembles Brandon Jacobs. Guys have seen both up close have probably noticed resemblance also.

Yeah, all 17 year olds drink. That doesn't mean some of them don't have a legitimate problem. We have no idea what Groome's situation is but there was enough there for several teams to pass on him. Love the pick, but let's not stick our heads in the sand. Will go with that also.. Drinking wasn't allowed when I grew up in the household. I joined the Navy after HS (17) and then, could drink at 17 with Military ID in Florida and boys did some of us!. Later, in California the standard drinking age was still 21, but was 18 on base.. Being away from home for really 1st time? Many drank. Sounds like this kid went away to IMG and was away from his parents for the very 1st time.. Went with the flow of his peers and drank.. Just be glad it wasn't like the distant past and had cigarettes and "other" pressures hoisted upon him as well. He can stop it if he wants, most do after a bit when figure out it's nothing but poison.

Is he a worse Deven Marrero? Only way it could be worse, is if he ends up costing more than slot also...

I'm curious to know why they seem to have scheduled DH's in the pre season schedule for the GCL season. Found 1 1st week of the season, tho this one is for the Marlins: Marlins DHRains enough in Florida during the summer as it is without scheduling 2 games in the afternoon I'd think. Hope get to see some of the good kids in action in July when we have a week scheduled at The Fort. Another in mid August.

That's what I meant Telson13, even taking the potential BP power guys lower on down.. Like Kelleher is an improvement which the team wasn't doing prior much. I saw him throw a BP last year in August and it wasn't that pretty. Still? He could work out and it was only a 100k gamble as compared to organizational fill with how many others and Kelleher is a wild card who could maybe help with command throwing upper 90's.
We will be making at least 2 week long trips to The Fort again this year and take lots of pictures again, try to send along some notes and what can take in from what saw. Only what I'd like to see them spend a few picks on as it seems to be heaviest at.. HS power arms, so why not go that route, rather than pitchers the organization has done little to nothing with over the last 6-8y throwing 88-92 and decent secondaries?

They always say to never draft for an organizational need, but this team needs to draft some potential power SP who have the potential to end up that way the 1st 2-3 rounds if possible with this draft seeming to be so deep with pitching if everything stays as it seems it is and not go after backup catchers and 5th OF.

Son and I were going to spend a week at The Fort, but decided against it this year.. Will just catch couple weeks worth of GCL games over 2 periods later on this summer instead.
Hope all you Bostonians have a good time while here in Florida this year. Been kind of chilly (Florida wise) this year, tho amd sure a lot warmer than what you have been getting.
Nice picture Jimed. Must have taken nearly an act of congress for Williams to have gotten off of his golf cart in that period the photo was taken however. The guy's butt was practically glued to the passenger seat in Winter Haven then.

Don't remember watching a single game he threw with the Dodgers, but his games with the Fish many weren't exactly pretty. He was trying to kind of reinvent himself this season it looked like. A fork ball type of pitch he has come up with, that didn't always work as planned, though did have hitters off balance. His FB isn't nearly as good as it was. Looked on FG site just before this post and they have it at 91.5. I'm shocked by that as an avg. It seemed like he was sitting 90-91mph most games. Maybe hitting 92-3 when he'd reach back. NOT the latos from Cincy days a few years back, except for around the waist.
If a team could get him to winterball (right-0) to work more on his fork ball and get it more consistent, then maybe as a long guy, 6th man type. He's not anything more IMO any longer.

LJS, wasn't that homesickness the major reason he signed with San Diego? To be nearer to St George. He was a Mormon with strong religious views and also the media attention he didn't care for much at all. Look at his background is all it takes to see why. Not anything negative about Boston, just a guy not used to any of the attention he was having heaped upon him and didn't really care for it, nor want it and wasn't initially able to handle it. There are at least 2 members here that were around on those old HaSox teams, one was quite close to the action I "think" that far back?? Maybe his time with them (non player) was a couple of years later, but this member can probably verify as to how religious and "stick to himself" Bruce was that summer of '77.

2005 and it isn't very close. Ellsbury, Hansen, Buchholz, Lowrie, and Bowden all made it to the majors. Some with exceptional results. Then they drafted Pedro Alvarez, Charlie Blackmon, and Jason Castro - none of which signed, but hey. 2005 is probably the best baseball draft in history overall, all things considered. In team history, yeah it's up there. In terms of depth, 1976 is probably the best: Bruce Hurst, Glenn Hoffman, John Tudor, and Wade Boggs (as well as SoxProspects.com Forum Favorite Reid Nichols). And in terms of overall value, the 1983 edition that got Roger Clemens and Ellis Burks draft is pretty cool. Hurst, Hoffman and Nichols spent time at Winter Haven spread out over the '76-78 seasons. Nichols thought was from nearby Lake Alfred, only 4-5 miles from W/H, but his BR page says he graduated from Ocala HS which is around 45-50 miles away. Still qualified as a local product. Hoffman remember had these special tags on his car: "HOFF-1" guess he wasn't going around even then disguising who he was and why? Wonder if he continued doing that after making the majors? Hurst was one of the nicest guys ever met and got to know during all my years going to HaSox games. A real loner who was down right homesick at the time. Could, and did have several interesting chats with Bruce during the course of that '76 season and over the course of several spring training's from then onwards as long as he remained with Boston.

For a team like Boston that has been blessed to have had offensive forces, like Ted Williams, Yaz, ortiz, Jim Rice and Dwight Evans. Does any one of them have to have been the greatest acquisition?
Some teams STILL haven't have had any player of that caliber and have been in the league for several decades.

I just have to know who gave to vote to Rolandi Baldwin and it was NOT me, though was tempted to give 'em one just to make sure he did receive one.

I hope that list was meant tongue in cheek bro. Most were fringy ballplayers anyway, other than Hundley who did come all the way back and produce. John Baker came back, though he could never throw before he got hurt, just couldn't hit after his injury. It did seem to ruin his career for some reason as he had won the marlin's job and the injury ruined that chance. The rest? Just an injury that made them even more fringy as minor leaguers for the most part.

Marban is looking much better (strikes wise) at Pawtucket than he was earlier in the year at Salem. I'd much rather see him protected on the 40 man than someone like Noe Ramirez and a power arm, with a filthy splitter has a better chance to be a average reliever than someone who barely cracks 90mph.
They fail to stick him on the 40 man roster and it's a mistake, he may go to another team and be another Alex Wilson, except Marban has a legit K pitch.

With my general lack of focus on GCL stats and results, I had completely missed how dominant the Sox were during the regular season. 41-17! Also, this is an "only in 2015" quote from manager Tom Kotchman about Yankory Pimentel: "he's not a hard thrower. He's usually somewhere around 92-95." Ah, I'm so old I remember when throwing 92-95 *was* a hard thrower. Agree. Remember used to wonder how come Ed Whitson was so crappy when he would sit 90-91 and get hammered all the time. Hard throwers, like JR Richard, Nolan Ryan, Bob Veale, Frank Tannana, were an anomaly. Most guys were mid 80's back then for sure. Game really has changed.

As Arnie Johnson would say...... very interesting! For you young-ins.........that was a big hit on TV many years ago.......called Laugh-In. "velly, velly interesting! in a German accent, with the old Kaiser era helmet, Circa WW1 as I recall? I can't recall the name of the blond haired actor, with wire rimmed glasses who played that part now.. So many years ago Steve.. Any help? Edit: I googled and finally found it.. Even under his google page. It was Arte Johnson as what he was best known for.

GCL Tigers lost to Dunedin. There goes my chance of having to just travel 2 miles to see the GCL Sox for possibly 1 game.

Thanks for the pics and report, Steve! By the way, question for you, johnsilver or whoever - do you know if Carlos Tovar ever actually left the club when he was "sent" back to the DSL this season? We've guessed that this was just a paper move, but I was just wondering if either of you had noticed. Same with whether Kevin Kelleher is still with them now (he's technically on the Lowell roster, but I'm assuming he's just working out whatever kinks there were that led to his completely forgetting where the strike zone is). Kelleher was with the team, albeit only wearing a TShirt around a month ago before he was technically listed as being on either roster. I saw him then, though that doesn't answer any question as to where he is now.

Max Watt is a really nice guy isn't he Steveofbradenton? When we were at Ft Myers and chatting with him, he was a very courteous young man. Said after took his picture that just let him know if needed anything, or something cold to drink even. Just a very nice man.

Does Boston hope to catch some Korean lightning in a bottle with Byung-ho Park this winter if he's posted? R-L combo at 1b, along with Shaw with one taking over FT should the other fail? Maybe catch another decent find, along the lines of Jung-ho Kang? Probably cheaper than giving up kids in a trade, if Dombrowski is thinking of that course for the 2nd front line starter. Edit: Forgot link... Byung-ho Park

Rich Hill had such success as a reliever. Gotta wonder exactly what the plan is for him ... assumed he was aiming for a spot in '16 bullpen. It's reasonable to expect him in BOS in Sept. Wasn't his problem that the curveball, being his most effective pitch vs lefties, litterally destroys his elbow after a handful of innings each season?

You look at the roster for Pawtucket, especially the pitching staff and compare it from April to now and wonder just what is going on.. Names are almost totally different. Rotation of the kiddie corps is either hurt (Johnson, Workman, Wright), or starting in Boston, being Owens, Rodriquez and Barnes. New faces in the pen, new faces on the team all over the place brought into the organization. It's been a wild ride roster wise.

I don't think the Sox should do anything with Swihart until it is determined that Vazquez has fully recovered. That won't be until next spring. It also would make no sense to trade Bogaerts. His defense has improved enormously and he has become one of the best hitters in the league. He is part of the core of the Sox now and I really doubt Dombrowski - who is a big believer in being good up the middle - is going to screw with that. And he doesn't have to. He has plenty of other options. If any big name gets traded, my bet is that it is Hanley. He doesn't fit into this team. I will be very surprised if he still is with the team come spring. Wasn't necessarily calling for a trade of Bogaerts, only saying that of the kids with large value, he is the one that could be replaced (somewhat) temporarily by either Holt, or Marrero, until either Lin, or Guerra develop in a couple of years. Both of the possible front end pitchers the team has in the system are 3+ years away and that is the biggest need, with the team needing 2 NOW.
