The problem with Plouffe is that he is almost a clone of Pablo, both in hitting and fielding. If he is available, and a lot of people seem to think he is, Todd Frazier, who hit 40 HRs last year, would be a better choice, assuming the price isn't too high.

I was not happy with the trade because I liked Shaw, as some may recall because of numerous posts of mine over time supporting him. I also was a little concerned that the trade left the Sox too exposed at 3B. However, I also saw the potential value to the Sox because they were getting a better RP than any they had except Kimbrel. If Thornburg had not gotten hurt, he would have helped the Sox a lot, and he may do so in the future. This is mostly a case of bad luck, even though I agree they overpaid.

Jordan Wren is Frank Wren's son, drafted in the 36th round last year.

Does anyone know if we were linked to Houck at all before the draft? I ask because I assume if we were on him then there is some greater likelihood that they've talked about bonus money and perhaps the Sox are in a position to save some money from the slot bonus. I read that the Sox were on him. it might have been Keith Law.

Who would you have selected instead? Nate Pearson, Bubba Thompson, Nick Allen.

This Boyer guy is a find. He had some gas tonight. A classic Sox win because they forced Verlander to throw too many pitches and got him out of the game.

Keith Law: "Rooker simplified his swing this spring and has produced video-game numbers in the powerful SEC, but he’ll turn 23 in November, making him older than at least four players currently in the big leagues, and has no position other than (maybe) first base."
Law ranked him 91st.

No comments on Owens being blown out of the first inning. Any intelligence on what happened?

I don't know much more than what I see in the boxscore and occasionally see on TV but I suspect Farrell knows more than most of us about the condition of his players. It is not a big deal with me whether he leaves Sale in, or not. Sale's ego doesn't need that complete game. Considering the team's injuries and lack of power so far, I don't think he is doing a bad job.

Anyone recall the last Sox player to get 5 hits in a nine inning game?

An apprenticeship works by gradually giving someone more and more responsibility. This is the opposite of that. This is giving the highest-leverage situation to a guy just called up from AAA (and a guy who was optioned back down immediately after the game). There are plenty of ways to gauge a player's performance level other than that. Their performance in the minors or lower-leverage situations in the majors, for instance. I disagree with you. I had a lot of experience developing people in my several careers and I had the very best results when I put people with talent in situations they never before had experienced. There is a huge psychological and actual difference between pitching in AAA and in the majors, especially in this situation. Yes, he gave up one run but then stopped it. I was following it on Gameday while doing other things but I do recall that last batter fouling off a bunch of pitches before finally flying out. That had to be an enormous confidence booster for the young pitcher. I don't disagree that Hembree is better, but it has taken him a while. At this point, I think it was both a smart and courageous move by Farrell to put the kid in there. It may pay off big time later in the year.

I was watching Gameday at the end of the game and when Kimbrel got the second strike on the high inside pitch I thought, throw an even higher one more outside - and he did and he won the game!
Long ago I learned how to pitch but my body did not cooperate.
On another subject, my primary care physician, who is a very prominent and important doctor here in Portland, says the flu vaccines wear off. He told me he waits to get his until late, like November or December, even later if the flu has no shown up. I got mine in January. Maybe the Sox players got theirs too early.

I'm very happy the season is starting and we get to see the results of the trades, etc. This board has been very depressing with so much negativity - more than any year that I can recall. The constant attacks on Dombrowski are just ridiculous. Now we get to see the results of his trades and I am of the opinion that they will be better than many think.

I am thoroughly convinced that by the end of Dombrowski's time here, whether he goes quietly or is forced out (maybe hanged in effigy?), immediately or soon after, he will be adjudged as a sort of Buddy LeRoux character, over his head and out of his depth, which will take this team not a little time from which to recover. This is one of the most ridiculous posts I ever have read on this site. He won in Miami. He won in Detroit and under him the Sox went from two last place finishes to the post-season and now the Sox are viewed as one of the best teams in MLB. It is not his fault that pitchers have arm problems. My only complaint with him is that he didn't reverse the Pomeranz trade.

As to JBJ's streakiness, the fact is that almost all players are streaky. He has been a bit extreme but it's not all that uncommon. A couple of years ago I logged every Sox game into a spreadsheet so I could see how every player did for every game. Every player on the Sox had hot and cold streaks. Some were longer than others but all tended to group multi-hit games together and 0 for 4, or 1 for 5 or 0 for 3 games together. I believe this has been documented by others.

I haven't gotten into this longstanding debate because I had not made up my mind about several of the trades. Now I can say that the only trade with which i am not comfortable is the Pomeranz trade. I think they should have forced a reversal of that trade because once it was known that he had potential physical problems the odds that Espinoza would be a better bet got enormously larger. I know they were trying to win it all last year, but realistically that was not reasonable. I still like the Kimbrel trade. None of the players the Sox gave up in that trade were critical to the Sox future. I also like the Sale trade. I am not a believer that Moncado will be the superstar that many others think he will be and I suspect the Sox management came to the same conclusion.
I like this year's team more than any one in quite a few years. I think we are going to have a lot of fun this year.

I suspect the replacements for Bogaerts and Bradley are not in the system today.
