Thanks for the clarification. I dont think Lester will get traded till the last minute. Wherever they go, hope Lackey and him get us a bounty who actually meets their expectations.

Keep in mind, Lester was not considered a 1A pitcher until middle of last year when he pulled a rabbit out of his hat and dominated the league. Whatever Farrell or Neives has to do with it, but before that he was a solid 1B pitcher but not really the 1A he become now. I would love to see them sign him back in the offseason for a 5yr deal and if not, get some assets back and give your AAA stable and who knows, one of them turns out in to Lester in few years.

Money is always a factor but also players preference for continuing their way of life and friendships built over the years they spend in a city. Lester has been in the Sox organization for over 10 yrs and in Boston since 2007, so not wanting to uproot his life for few more dollars (which wont impact anything for him in the bigger scheme of things) is a real incentive. However he also could have peer-pressure form union to get the max contract and do their service to improve wages for players after them. So its a tough decision, one way or the other and if there is a reasonable chance he could make 90% of his max contract and still come back to Boston, he will and should consider it and he has indicated he will do so. So no surprise from a guy who loves Boston for what it has done for him and what he did to it.

I follow hockey and this situation is comparable to Avalanche losing Paul Stastny for nothing when they could have traded him at the deadline. As a business Redsox should maximize their assets and deploy them wisely. Irrespsective of what we think, they will field a competitive team. Just like the departed FA's from 2013 team is not the reason why this team slipped from a WS winer to a last place in the division team, trading one or two elite players will not be the only reason on how they perform next year. Posters commenting on what other posters like to see (whether BA #1 team or sign Lester for 6yr 145m contract) would be wise to stick to the merits of the proposed trades. Reduces noise if nothing else.

I submit if by hook or crook the Red Sox dump lester for good prospects and sign him back in the off season it will go down as one of the great personnel decisions in Sox history. The reason this makes no sense is that if the Sox think enough of him to sign him for $150 million or so this off season, why not give him $120 million or so last march and keep 2015 first round draft choice? Are a few deadline prospects really worth $30 million? Doubt it. As a mid season traded player, he wont get QO and wont cost a draft pick.

Tough abats by Jeter and Gardner in previous innings. It is having an effect on Lackey. His last game against Mariners same thing happened. One long at bat in the 4th inning and he game up 3-4 runs after that.

With Matijevic looking out of the picture, who could be this year's last minute "Mookie" signing? It would be disappointing if they left some money on the table.

Mike Andrews is killing it with bonus predictions. He got it pretty close for Sam Travis.
2 (67) Sam Travis $850,000

The site projection was 50K bonus. I am surprised for such a low projection for a HS kid. Given the overslot bonus he got, Sox saw something better.

In baseball an average game sees Fastball about 40-50% of the time. So any one who has a better fastball is more likely to have success than the one with out. So I would say at this point Barnes could have a better career than Owens. Either of them can develop and have successful careers but the work is cut out for them.

Let me preface by saying I did not follow Ball much and dont know much about him. This is what I know. Sox scouting staff thought highly off him to draft at 7th slot. Almost all scouting pundits saw him as a top 10 pick. Even with all his not being ready for the season, Sox think highly of him by placing him in Greenville instead of XST/Lowell etc. What that tells me is that folks that know their stuff think he is good enough to be where he is. Can he still be a bust? absolutely possible. Can he be worthy of where he was selected? absolutely possible. So instead of fighting on small samples, "are we there yet" discussions, we all know the journey is long for him so lets just sit and enjoy the ride.

Mercedes had his original contract voided with the Giants due to identity/age issues, sat out a year, and signed with the Red Sox for twice as much a year later. He's an interest signing for many of the reasons Alex Speier describes here: ....... Just fascinating stuff that I had totally forgotten. Mercedes is in many ways emblematic of the way the front office has completely overhauled its international strategy in the past few years. So far, the Eddie Romero era looks like it has spectacular potential, between Mercedes, Margot, Rijo, Devers, Lin, and what looked like an intriguing DSL roster last year. PS: how hilarious is it that he tried to pretend he was 16 when he signed with the Giants? I think he was already something like 6'4" 220-ish at the time. That's some Miguel Tejada-level shenanigans. Not defending what he did but it almost always plays on the lines "the local agent tell his parents that he gotta tell them he is 16 or else they are not going to sign him" and he plays along to it rather than him deciding to do it on his own.

I don't think you can say Reddick wasn't ready after about a month long sample size at that point of games (see Pedroia, Dustin, 2006). I think they had a need, and they figured it wouldn't set him back to call him up. In reality, he's been the same guy in Oakland that he was here, so I think it's more about undervaluing his power (in relationship to patience) than selling low (at a time when everyone was wary of making any deal with Theo). Also, to be clear, I am not an advocate of promoting Betts to Boston at this time, though I wish I could be. I think theo was good with building the player development system and knowing the strengths of his players and possibly holding the line (mostly) with player (re)signings. I didn't think he was that effective with trades. Always thought he had to overpay to get what he wanted compared to other GM's for trades.

Making AA and MLB debut in a year spanning two seasons is lot different than doing it in the same season. Off season and ST helps them refine their game, not to mention the physical maturity. I highly doubt Betts will see any big league action this year.

Prediction: This will not get done. I don't think the Sox have re-signed a high profile free agent after they reached the Nov. "negotiation with anyone you like" free agent period since Varitek Mike Lowell. If they want you they lock you up before that rather than risk getting out bid. Does Napoli count? May be my memory is not serving me right on this, but I think they might have done it once with Ortiz couple years back probably right before the FA period started?

Anyone freaking out 12 games into any season should automatically be stripped of the right to ever again use the term "small sample size." I am not one to worry about their win loss record in April, but a professional team with high payroll not being in sync and continue to make mental mistakes after two months of being together (including ST) should raise some concern. I think the pitching inconsistency is a bigger surprise to me so far than the offense. And slotting CB to pitch the 5th game to start the season is another surprise.

As much as I like HO, I dont want him in the big leagues this year even as a Sept call up. His cutoff this year would be around 150-160 innings and he should split them between AA and AAA. I think one of the current AAA guys is much more likely than HO to replace Lester in the short term if he leaves as a FA.

I would assume the bid/ask is 4/$70 and 6/$144. Sounds to me that there is plenty of room to negotiate a five-year deal (5/105?) at the end of the season. If not, we'll give the QO, take the draft pick and look forward to one of Webster/Ranaudo/Owens/Barnes/Workman/De La Rosa in the rotation next year, plus additional money to spend in free agency. Assuming those are the starting bid/ask, the midpoint is 5/107 which is 21.4m per season and if that does not get it done then they will wish him luck and take the pick.

The real reason is john henry putting all the money on his soccer team.
I see no problem with Lester's reported offer. They offer 4/70-80, he asks 6-7/130-150, come all star break they agree 5/100-110.
