I am not sure if this Fenway swing is anecdotal or proven theory. The last two guys they brought in with Fenway swing that was going to pepper the monster didn't really show that ability for whatever reasons even though they had good numbers overall. Edit: I messed up something and not getting the quote correctly, but I was referring to this comment "Too lazy to look up his spray charts, but does Hart have that Fenway swing?"

If they are going to lose a pick over it make it a premium guy. I still can't believe we didn't make a play for Kuroda even if we had to go 2-3 years to sign him. That is a guy who was worth a pick. And his contract is absolutely reasonable. I see the age but I also see one heck of a consistent performance record. And Choo is also. You might have to get off the Kuroda bandwagon as I think Sox tried it once and was told that he will only play for the MFY if he plays in MLB. I also dont see Sox getting Tanaka because the new posting rules dont make it easy for them and they have enough depth both in ML and AAA/AA. If they lose Napoli, i think they will bring Drew back. FWIW i would like to see Napoli back but dont mind Drew at all with WMB sharing load at 1B/3B against LHP giving breathers to Drew and whoever mans 1B.

Mujica and AJP signings indicate they are strengthening the defensive side to counter the potential drop in the offensive side. If we project that, it is more likely they sign Drew to improve the defense on the left side of the infield as well as create depth. May be they will lose Napoli and replace him with WMB/Carp/Nava rotation for IB? Or get some one by trading their depth in SP/RP combination. Have to say interesting times to be a Sox fan and I for one am not big on giving any contract over 100-120M to a player unless they played for the Sox for few years already. I disagree with folks wanting to give "whatever it takes" to Cano and that has disaster written all over it. As some one else pointed out, I dont remember a big money contract working well so far for any team even 80% of the contract length.

I hate MFY as much as the next Sox fan but you have to respect what they do even if part of it involves throwing the money around. Dont forget that the MFY was right there in the WC hunt almost till the end even with all the problems they had last year. I think it will be interesting to see if MFY will ink Cano now and if they do, how they will plug the rotation. If they also ink Cano then I think they will go full court press for Tanaka. I would love to see Sox plugging in farmhands and reap the rewards while the MFY goes FA to FA and miss playoffs for the next 10 years. Oh my wishes.

What are the possible landing spots for Stephen Drew? For some reason I was sure it would be either Cardinals or the Yankees but now that they both are out of the picture, I am not sure where else he can land. Does this increase his chances of a return with XB to 3B and WMB to 1B?

I think dodgers could seriously consider eating money and moving ethier/kemp+prospects like pederson for price. On the Sox side would Dempster/Peavy + RDLR/Webster get Kemp + some money? I think Kemp in LF, Bradley in Center with Nava/Carp manning 1B and Gomes/Nava giving days off to Kemp/Victorino would work well.
Edit: But then signing Beltran for 3-4yrs could serve the same purpose far more cheaply.

Redsox production this year out of SS + 3B was not that great to start with. I think production from XB + WMB + JB will more or less equal the production Sox got out of SS + 3B + CF this year. They had a better defensive year overall out of those three combined positions this year than they potentially could get next year. I fully expect WMB will hit (even with ton of K's) next year to the tune of 700-750 OPS with a positive surprise to the upside and with out looking at the numbers I think that was more than this years production from 3B. XB and WMB will provide the RH power the team needs in addition to Napoli (I think he will be back). I dont think the sox will have problems putting up runs though they might be inconsistent. The question is whether the Sox pitching will have a good year or not after having a long year this year. Ton of tired arms in the BP with Taz, Uehara and Workman logging lot of innings this year.

Jacoby's last at bat for the Red Sox? Can he steal one here one last time for the good times sake?

I might be one of the luckiest Sox fan. Since I became a Sox fan back in 2001/2002 they won 2 and are on the verge of a third title.

What has Xander seen 5 pitches this game? Completely out of character too. Weird. Maybe the pressure got to him? I think the other way around. Too pumped up and trying to hit it out

Why is the division countdown at 2? If TB lose this game then even if sox loses all the remaining games and TB wins all remaining games both are tied at 93-69 and I think Sox hold the tiebreaker. So essentially if TB loses today, Sox wins the division. What am I missing?

They should offer all of them QO. I dont think Drew and Ells accepts and they will sign elsewhere. Salty will reject it as well but might sign a 3/30 deal with Sox. Napoli could accept it and it will be great for Sox. Even if he rejects it they can work out the remaining portion of his original deal with higher base and incentives say 2/18 topping out at 2/26. Depending on how things play out Salty can be in either DH/1B some of the time in his last 2 yrs.

I think they should call it a day for Buccholz leaving him feel good. Dont think Farrell should try to steal few more outs from him.

Sitting Xander today is just a dreadful decision by Farrell. How is that a dreadful decision? Kuroda is a righty and Drew is a lefty. Also: Just another productive at bat by Mike Carp. Nothing new here. Not commenting on the decision but your reasoning might make sense if XB has a split like Drew. He is one of the top prospects in baseball and if you are saying he can't handle a righty then he is not that elite of a prospect. There are other reasons mentioned above like his calf and Farrell not wanting to sit Drew much etc for sitting XB today.

So far Nava has been making 500K or so per year for his MLB service time. Given his past, and getting up there in age and mostly a platoon player a 3 yr deal would absolutely work for both sides. We are short on OF and he has shown he can play in Boston. I hope he can get a decent chunk of change. I rather give him the money he deserves than any one else.

You typically go with 12 man pitching staff. So if you go with 4 starters you get to have 8 RP. Dont forget webster might get some RP outings going forward. So we might see Dempster/Doubie, Rubby and Webster for those spots.

Does this terrify anyone else? Foot injuries often involve hairline fractures and don't heal quickly. Losing Ellsbury would be a huge, huge blow. Agree completely. If it's not a fracture and just a deep bone bruise they may be able to manage it with a direct injection painkiller. The danger with that is he could potentially lose some feel in the foot for balance and placement, at least initially. The greater danger, of course, is that he could damage it more by trying to play through. If it's not a fracture I would bet we see him in 7-10 days. If it is a fracture he may be gone for the season. It's the same injury Pedroia and Tek suffered that landed them in walking boots for 6-10 weeks. Quite possible Ellsbury's last play to remember for Sox is the run he scored top of the 10th the other day. I think they should get him out for the next 2-3 weeks and see how it heals. No need to rush him at this point but given Ellsbury this is a dilemma. He typically takes his time from injuries but at the same time I think he would want to be in a game to show potential suitors that he is tough/healed. I wonder how this will play out.

I expected XB at 7th behind WMB or atleast 8th if they want R L R combination. Doesn't make sense to bat him 9th. This looks like Farrell saying I am gonna show your place kid and it is where I say it is.
