Today would be a great day for the Red Sox to finally sign JDM. Maybe that's just my super bowl hangover talking tho

Devers and Mookie will be duking it out for the AL MVP honor this year and we will be so drunk off our prospect Kool-aid. Can't wait.

Looks like he's wearing his reg. infielder glove. Gotta believe it's just standard fielding GBs.

The only real candidates are Bradley, Bogaerts, Betts, and I suppose E-Rod. All of their performances (maybe except Mookie) have fluctuated throughout their careers. It's tough to come up with a deal at present that as you say would "work for both sides". There's a decent chance that a longer extension for Xander and JBJ ends up looking like a disaster for the team. Also, players are getting one big chance to cash in these days, so why take an extension that buys out years where you could potentially make a lot more if you went to FA?
I think we'd all like reasonable extensions that allows the Red Sox flexibility, but it takes two sides to agree to a deal.

Just wanted to see what the forum thinks of the current landscape for players through the lens of their ability to get the FA contracts they want and/or deserve:
The latest iteration of the CBA has clearly negatively effected the players and their right to FA. There's a stricter cap, and the aging curves have borne out that players past the age of 32/33 decline rather quickly. Unfortunately for the players, most won't reach true FA until about 30 and that caps their ability to cash in on a long-term deal. I know it would be a battle, but they need a different solution so players can hit some sort of freeish market earlier.
NBA has restricted FA after 3 years (I think), I'd have to believe that the player's would make more money in MLB if they were allowed to shop their services earlier while still allowing their original some semblance of control. Obviously, the strict cap in the NBA helps set the structure but I can't help but think that unless you are an ELITE free agent, the current process is hurting the MLB player pool on the whole. I'm not sure the current arbitration system is serving the players as well as it could.
What should the Player's Union look to do, if anything?

This article expands on an evolving Red Sox emphasis on elevating the baseball. There are lots of good stats depicting Sox poor relative standing in various offensive categories. They highlight the now negative effects of our patient approach...taking more pitches in the zone which lead to swinging at more outside the zone, low % and angle of elevation etc. We finished last in almost all categories listed starting with launch angle..and it's impact. But even with balls hit in the air we were only 14th in HR %. That underscores less inherent power potential too.....not just launch angle. Hyer appears to be a good hire......; alter the approach....but also add inherent power to the roster. We have a small team. The Yankees have gone big. Sometimes size matters. Re launch angle tho, Ted Williams' philosophy has come full circle. www.espn.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/53826/j-d-martinez-or-no-j-d-martinez-red-sox-have-a-plan-to-relaunch-their-offenseInteresting article, and important to think about at this time. This is the thing about this offseason, aside from adding JDM, the biggest impact next season will come from Xander, Mookie, JBJ all improving incrementally from last year. If they all can come closer to 2016 form, the offense will look a whole lot more potent. That plus a whole year of Devers and Benny's second season, could lead to a much improved offense. Considering the budget limitations and lack of a farm system, I have always thought that this offseason was going to be difficult.

If the slider is real for Hernandez that's crazy exciting

I like the signing. Better than paying Hosmer. .877 OPS before breaking his toe, and Statcast really likes him. Still had 22 HRs last year. Need to sign JDM, but this is a solid move.

Someone tell me why we're going to give JD Martinez twice what we could have signed Carlos Martinez for. Markedly better hitter, no draft pick penalty for signing him.

Say the Red Sox sign JDM, would anyone be terribly upset if Moreland came back on a 1 year deal? Outside of the time period where he was playing with an injured foot, he was a productive hitter and decent fielder.
I'm more inclined to want to bring back Mitchy or sign Duda than I am to want Hosmer.

Taking inventory of our division... the majority of impact bats we will face are RH. Our rotation has a ludicrous amount of LHP. I've begun to look at some of the pitching moves that can be made. One obvious one is getting Neshek or Cishek for the pen.
Are there any signings/trades for any pitchers that intrigue you guys?

Assuming we handle business this series, I just want Sale and especially Pomeranz to be given a bit of a breather. Pomeranz was barely hitting 90 in his last start, and seems like he could use a slightly extended rest.

Camden Yards seems like the perfect place for Mookie to find the stroke

I say this while acknowledging that he has put up a 4.4 WAR season without being a stud in the batters box

Bogaerts is the most intriguing Sox player the rest of this year and moving forward.
There are probably a bunch of interesting trades that can be made involving him in the offseason. If he proves healthy and rakes throughout this year, however, the calculus of those deals and his future contract change immensely.

The thing I struggle with is do you move a guy that is just starting to make real progress? Or allow him to get at least decent at third first? He just hasn't had a ton of time playing third while healthy. I like the idea of him trying new positions in AFL. See how he adjusts and handles it. Not sure I want him playing a new position starting next year unless they have a clear plan to get him to majors. This is how I feel. I want Chavis playing 3B the rest of this year, and probably at the beginning of next year. I just view the AFL as a good spot to see if 2B is a more natural feel for him. His best defensive attribute for 3B might be his arm, but that doesn't mean his reactions and hands might not play up better at 2B to make him as good if not better at 2B than 3B.

Devers and Benny have picked up Mookie's slack, but Im feeling a 3 week stretch where Betts exacts revenge on pitchers and carries the gang

Chavis seems a guarantee to play in the AFL right? That seems an ideal time to expose him to 2B and/or LF to me. Let him play the year out at 3B, then see if he can be a versatile player in the AFL

Benintendi and Nunez have been hot in August. Other than that the rest of the lineup is meh. Betts needs to hunt those fastballs some more, and idk what Bogaerts did to his once beautiful swing, but it looks like hes chopping wood. He can't pull anything anymore. Bogaerts swing hasn't been beautiful for a long long time, but at least he was getting opposite field hits like crazy the past couple of years. He's not even slap hitting anymore, he's a pop up machine. Hopefully it's due to the injury and not something else. I hope its injury too, but last year he was pulling the ball with some authority and it led to 21 HRs. I watch highlights of 2013 from time to time and really miss the quiet balance and power he displayed.

Mookie has been striking out a lot more the past 2 months or so.... He certainly has, and it is not coming with a power tradeoff either...
