I don't see how JBJ makes it through the entirety of spring training without being shipped to Texas or Pittsburgh. Cherington is trying to build something for 2022 and beyond. He'd never give up anything for a year of Bradley.

Yesterday Dan O Dowd was adamant the Dodgers were not going to take Price in any deal, but now he is all aboard saying he was a tremendous get for the Dodgers. When you get David Price for 3 years for $45 million when Dallas Keuchel gets 3/55, that is a tremendous get -- and a tremendous bargain. With all the money the Sox kicked in, it's amazing Bloom couldn't get a minor leaguer from the Dodgers. Even if you get their No. 20 prospect, at least you've got a slim chance the player makes the majors.

I have to hope the Sox did due diligence on the assault in the hotel room. I hope they have the guts to address it.

As a baseball trade, C+ at best. It's hard to believe they got no one from the Dodgers system. It's hard to believe Bloom couldn't get them to throw in someone from the lower half of their top 30 to see if they might get lucky.
Combine that with what a horrible human Verdugo apparently is and it drops to a D.

That alone makes me not want him one bit. I lost a TON of respect for Gabe Kapler when that story broke, and I don't think he should be allowed to be in a position of power in the league based on the reports of his behavior. No personal offense, but is it because the media doesn't bury, or even know about crimes committed by ballplayers nowdays and fans can be so "enraged" as they are? Do you think many of these same crimes were less committed earlier, only nobody knew about them? There is/was no precious union to come to Verdugo's defense here also and attempt to whitewash the entire matter, if indeed the story in entirely true. For me? I trust very little of what is written/seen in the media. Would you rather crimes got covered up? And do you not believe this incident happened even after Kapler (belatedly) apologized for how he handled it?

Why isn't Ruiz valued more and ranked higher? He's a 21 year old catcher in AAA with Wade Boggs' strikeout rates. .330 SLG at AA and threw out 23 percent of baserunners. Not saying he won't get better, but it's not like he's a sure thing.

With the Cora sign-stealing thing, the Sox may not have to worry about making a high pick for a while.

I'm not saying Sale and Eovaldi are done, but there were HUGE red flags with Sale's last year. Giving him a huge extension before the season was a bad move. If he's healthy and pithing well, try to sign him after the season, and if someone else beats you on the deal, so be it.
And Eovaldi is a guy who's had injury problems throughout his career. He's made more than 27 starts once (in 2014) and has an ERA+ of 95 for his career. I still think he might be good for next year, but 4/68 was too many years and too much money. Try to get him for two years, and go 3/40 or so if needed. If someone tops that -- not sure who would have -- let him go, don't go overboard because of a great October.
I think the trades for Sale, Eovaldi and Pearce were fine. The new contracts weren't.

I think Margot, Guerra and Asuaje for Kimbrel was fair. Putting Logan Allen in was the problem for me. The Padres had gone into rebuild mode, and the last thing a team in rebuild mode needs is a closer who's owed $39 million over the next three years. In trades, it's usually one of two things: You take on all the money and give up fewer in the trade, or the other team pays part of the contract and you give more pieces. Dombrowski took on all the money AND give up a haul. He should have said something like, "If you want to say you got 4 for 1, you can have Teddy Stankewicz, but not Logan Allen." Are the Padres really going to walk away from a deal that takes them off the hook for $39 million and gives them a major-league-ready center fielder if the Sox don't include Logan Allen? I doubt it.
But here's the real problem I see with Dombrowski. He does something that people routinely used to do, but virtually no one else does anymore: He pays for past performance. He did it with Miguel Cabrera, in Detroit and he did it with Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi and Steve Pearce in Boston.

I'm definitely not writing Sale off and hope he bounces back, but neither Clemens nor Lester was stick-figure skinny with a history of wearing down during the season. Though Clemens was getting called fat and started 24 and 23 games in two of his previous three seasons. Truthfully I don’t think thin is an issue. Guys like Randy Johnson lasted forever. Mechanics, conditioning, genes, luck. To me the question is what is wrong with Sale. Is he hurt? Doubt it. He is still hitting 96 (not as often, but still). His location is off, which strikes as more likely mechanical. My guess is he was hurt last year, let his mechanics slide to avoid whatever hurt, got messed up, and now he’s out of whack. His numbers are still pretty sick — home runs are killing him, which suggests he’s missing more than he has in the past. That is fixable. I’d rather pay Sale than have to find a new #1. Who would that be? How much would you give up? How many guys really have more upside? To be fair to Clemens, 24 starts was one behind the league-leaders in 1994, when the season was shut down in early August by a strike. Sale's numbers are sick in strikeouts, but his WHIP is the worst of his career. The big different is in the splits: Bases empty: .211/290/375/665 Runners on: 260/303/ 500/803 Is there some mechanical issue he has pitching out of the stretch? If so, it speaks bad of Levangie, Sale and Cora that they haven't figured out what it is. And if Sandy Leon is no help in that regard, why does Sale have to have him?

And speaking of Lester and Clemens: those guys had down years in their careers and bounced back. I suspect Sale will, too. I'm definitely not writing Sale off and hope he bounces back, but neither Clemens nor Lester was stick-figure skinny with a history of wearing down during the season.

Bit of a nit pick with Fangraphs, but I don't understand Feltman being ranked lower than Lakins. Both of these guys have been the biggest disappointing development for me this year. For me it's Scherff.

And if the Sox need someone to sign for $5,000 next year for cap manipulation, Berardino could be the guy.

While my Rebels were sniped, not bad with Groshans, a bonus for being Zeferjahn battery mate, like it, younger bro was drafted in the 1st round last yr by the Blue Jays, and is looking like a future star. I thought today would be a college heavy day, and am enjoying these picks so far. It worked with Scott Hatteberg, who caught Aaron Sele in college.

I'll take deep dives on a couple of guys.
Tyler Esplin (No. 37) hasn't hit yet, but he doesn't turn 20 for another month. There is still time for something to click with him.
And maybe, if he makes a full recovery from Tommy John, Roniel Raudes (No. 50) gets enough of an uptick in velocity to allow his pitchability to play better.

Nothing against him personally, but the Vitek pick was a strange one to me. It seemed he was billed as a guy without much power or speed or a clear-cut position. People liked his hit tool, but if that's all you've got, it had better be a great hit tool.
Whenever I hear talk of "helium" for a guy in a draft, I think of Vitek and wonder where his helium came from.

Anybody think Sheppard could give us some innings in Boston in 19? It's hard for me to see it, unless they had a rainout with a doubleheader the next day, and he came up as the 26th man for one of those games. The writeup on the site says he has no above-average pitches, and his minor-league numbers are pedestrian at best. I'm surprised he's on the roster and Ockimey isn't. (Nothing personal against Shepherd, and I'd love for him to prove me wrong).

According to Even Drellich, it's Esteban Quiroz going back to the Padres.
I thought Quiroz had a chance to be a contributor in 2019 -- seeing a lot of time at second -- and think he might have been in the majors 2018 if he hadn't gotten hurt. I think he's got a chance to hit in the majors.
