This dude better be a really good QB, because he looks like an absolute doofus.

Looks like they're taking Mac, just cut to him on the phone.

It was pretty obvious for the last 5 mins that it was Fields. After announcing the trade, they cut to Mac Jones in the greenroom, and then to an empty livingroom in the Fields household. After about 10 seconds, he and his family filed back into the room, with him putting his cell phone away.

Oh god Richards again already.... Yes, but today he gets to hit as well as pitch. Twice the mechanics to focus on.

Actually, he was still hitting great through the ASB that year.
He now has a 58 wRC+ in his last 402 PA.
But I'm not sure that's any more discouraging than 79 wRC+ over 813 PA.
That was Mike Lowell after his first six games in a Sox uni. He had a 105 the rest of the way and a 128 the year after.
After looking at Renfroe's splits I became more hopeful he can still be a useful piece - he's held his own against lefties at least. But I think he really needs to be used in much more of a platoon role. One difference from Lowell is that Lowell didn't have a real big L/R split over his career. While I understand the depth play approach with the bullpen, I think this is the main way it's hurting them. Franch-froe platoon is a thing, Cora just hasn't been very strict with it since he's also trying to give guys days off. With only 2 non-catchers on the bench, it means Renfroe is in there vs RHP more than he should be. I really think they need to swap in another position player soon, whether it's Santana or Chavis, to extend the bench options a bit.

I've wondered how Dalbec would profile in RF... Guess it was more than "a year or two ago".

Some glass half full numbers for Bobby. He’s cut his K% from 42.4% down to 34%. Still high, but that’s progress. His exit velocity, barrel %, and hard hit % are all at or around where they were last year (a little lower, but once he heats up things will go the other way). His expected batting average, weightedOBA, and slugging are way higher than his real numbers, suggesting that he’s been unlucky. 95th percentile in barrel %, 91st percentile in slugging percentage, 84th percentile in xBA and 85th in xwOBA. Shockingly, he’s also 84th percentile in sprint speed.
Granted I’m cherry picking the best numbers, but even with him not blasting home runs he’s showing some very good numbers hitting the ball. Dalbec's sprint speed would rank him 7th of 32 in RF. And he has that cannon.
This changes the entire Devers / Casas / Dalbec logjam notion. There's no guarantee that Jimenez is what we hope he'll be, and Casas will be in the picture a good year or two before him.
So now the question is where JDM falls on the Jason Bay to Nelson Cruz scale of masher longevity. The one idea I have (based on Bay as one data point!) is that guys whose success is based on tremendous success over a small part of the zone have rapid declines early, while guys who cover the whole zone really well have a great aging curve (OK, Papi makes that two data points). But the general point is that they very likely have a predictive understanding of slugger aging, and already know whether they want or expect JDM to finish his career here. This is interesting. I had brought up the idea of him in RF a year or two ago and was rebuffed by Chris that he wasn't athletic enough for the outfield. I think it was when scouting reports on him were trending down on his defense as he was looking pretty stiff at 3B, so it does seem like a lot has changed since then. Always felt moving him to 1B was wasting his best defensive asset in his arm.

He's not pitching like that guy at the moment no, but do you think he's toast? To me it seems more like he's just not right. Command has been horrible since his first spring start, and as far as I know that's not something that's been a big issue for him throughout his career. Career BB/9 of 3.3, and he was pretty good last year. So either he's completely changed as a pitcher in the last 6 months, or something is off. I'm inclined to believe his mechanics are off, or (likelier, considering his track record) he's dealing with some kind of injury issue (leading to bad mechanics). I think “toast” may not matter. That is, I think he is a mess and diminished from what he was at his peak. Do I think he can straighten out? Don’t know. But I think he is toast-enough that a team hoping to be really good that has Houck and Seabold ready to go can’t wait long to have a guy who is in a state closely approximating toast to, er, untoast? I agree, you can't keep running him out there. I'd give him one more start max and if they still can't figure out what the problem is, its time for a DL stint and he gets to try and get right on a rehab assignment.

Again, quoting the notorious cases of guys falling off a cliff at premature ages doesn't really add any context. I'm sure somewhere on Brewers Prospects Dot Com there is a guy saying they hate JBJ because Andruw Jones once played baseball. But no one is arguing that Richards c. 2015-2016 was a great pitcher. So citing career numbers doesn’t prove anything people aren’t stipulating. The issue is how close is he now to that guy. The answer seems to be not all close. He's not pitching like that guy at the moment no, but do you think he's toast? To me it seems more like he's just not right. Command has been horrible since his first spring start, and as far as I know that's not something that's been a big issue for him throughout his career. Rodriguez: 1.287 Richards: 1.262 If Felix Hernandez had made almost any team, wouldn’t his career numbers likely be the best on the staff? He beats Richards in all those categories. Maybe we shoulda given him $10 million? Again, quoting the notorious cases of guys falling off a cliff at premature ages doesn't really add any context. I'm sure somewhere on Brewers Prospects Dot Com there is a guy saying they hate JBJ because Andruw Jones once played baseball.

Friendly reminder that Garrett Richards has the lowest career ERA, FIP, and WHIP of any starter on the active roster I think MadBum has the same honor in the D’backs (though his 8+ ERA isn’t going to help). Bumgarner has twice as many MLB innings under his belt. They may have caught up to him. I don't think these are the same situation.

This is part of my beef with Franchy. Bottom 5th, he is so helpless against lefties, he’s out. So down an OF. Use Arroyo. So you have Renfroe and your *only* other catcher left. Can Franchy really not face Tommy Milone? I assume you move Marwin to left, keep Arroyo at 2b. But that is weak. Think it had more to do with the spot, rather than him not being able to face Milone. Especially considering he faced him in his last AB.

With how strong reactions to the Sox uniform have been, I really can't wait to see people sink Manhattan when the Yankees wear like... bright red "Big Apple" uniforms or something. Dragging this in here because I want to speak it into existence, and not let it get lost in the gameday thread.

This is cool. ADD: read the whole thread if you're, like me, unfamiliar with Kazmar's story. I remember this spring, we were playing Atlanta and Kazmar got an AB. Remembering him as a prospect from a while ago and hearing "junior", I assumed it was his kid until I looked him up.
