I think its time to promote Devers, he has nothing to prove in Greenville. It has to be done before he is moved down to the 6th or 7th prospect. 1) No idea what you're talking about on him moving down. (By the way, he's moving up to 4 on Monday). 2) He is the 8th youngest player in all of Low A. minorleaguecentral.com/youngest He would be the youngest player in High A by like half a year. There is ZERO rush to promote him. 3) I really disagree that he has "nothing to prove." Let's not act like he's dominating. His line is great, especially considering his age, but .340/.371/.480 with two home runs (which were both hit in the same game against TERRIBLE relief pitching, by the way) isn't showing me he has nothing to prove. He's got plenty to work on at this level, and to me, the only reason to even consider promoting him is to separate him and Chavis, who clearly needs the whole year in Greenville, and to me, that's not a good enough reason to promote him. It's unbelievable. We want them to fly thru the system without getting the much-needed experience. Then, we biatch and moan when they're not Ken Griffey Jr. hitting the ground running in Boston. 2 bleepin HR's in the Sally League and he's got nothing to prove for a guy who will probaby end up at 1b!!

I don't think it would be a bad move or indefensible to promote Devers, but conversely in NO way do they have to or is it time. Even if his line improves and he turns on the power there wouldn't be much wrong with keeping him in low A all year.
He could still get a promotion this year, but it will probably be mid summer to end of the year but again he is so young that it's not as if they are holding him back.

Is Low A Greenville (the entire Low A) considered a less than spectacular power league? Overal that is. I'm not sure.

The SAL plays pretty neutral. Statistically Fluor Field it is pretty doubles friendly, but overall it is neutral for both batting average and homers. Asheville is really the only relatively extreme hitters park.

The fact you said he hit both HRs off terrible relief pitching makes no sense. What does it matter who he hits it off? Its his job to take advantage of those situations. Greenville is jammed, and Devers stands out. He needs to be challenge, to see how he will react. His swing and size will eventually take care of his power, for now he will have to settle for being a doubles machine. I don't care if you move him to 4th or 10th on Monday, I just thought there was some inconsistency with him being moved in the first place. I have seen Devers in person, I think this kid is special. I am no expert, but I love what I have seen so far, just my 2 cents, sorry but I really disagree with your "expert" opinion.

If he keeps up with the good stats at the plate, I'd like to see him promoted by the end of July, basically like Margot's promotion last year. It worked out pretty well for Margot, can't see why it would not work out well for Devers.

I don't even understand what you're disagreeing with on the rankings thing. Is it because he "fell" last month? As we explained on the podcast, that was more a matter of Margot and Rodriguez moving up than him falling. We had the three of them very close. Our opinion of him hadn't decreased in the slightest. It's just we liked the other two more. The home run point is that it's not like he's hitting a home run every fourth game and showing he's clearly too good for the league. He's got plus raw power and he's not tapping into it right now. Wouldn't mind seeing him hit a few more out in a neutral power league before promoting him.

I don't know who "WE" is or why they biatch and moan, but when did playing first base become a sin? Votto, Goldschmith, Cabrera, Rizzo, Abreu, Freeman, Fielder seem like decent players to me. I wish some of those guys were on the Red Sox. I am not blind, I see Devers has "only" 2 HRs and I see he has not walked much, but I think those things will come. But just the fact that Greenville is jammed and that Devers stands out should be enough for a promotion, IMO.

It's not a sin, but it puts a lot more pressure on the bat for him to be a good major league player. If he can stick at 3B, he can hit like Sandoval and be very good. But that's probably below average at 1B. If he has to play 1B, he has to hit much better to make it and much, much better to be good. I also don't know why you'd want "some of those guys" as in multiple, because they can only play 1B.

Do you think evaluators would rather have equal players able to play 1b or 3b? If you don't understand whom I meant by "we", you don't read the board much.

I do believe this may happen in the next couple of weeks, but not that way. I would not be surprised if Chavis is at Lowell when their season starts so he can actually play 3rd everyday. He needs daily repetition in the field and at the plate. I would not be shocked if Devers stays the whole season in Greenville. He is so young, there is no reason to rush him. Now maybe next season they maybe promote him from Salem to Portland late in the year. I want to see more power from Devers before pushing him. But still.....you got to like the consistency at the plate.

But I will tell you this, in 38 years of following the Red Sox and watching baseball, his swing stands out as one of the best I have ever seen. And like my Dad once asked me, When have you ever seen a beautiful swing on a bad player? The answer is- never.

But just the fact that Greenville is jammed and that Devers stands out should be enough for a promotion, IMO. Not a reason to promote. You promote your stars when they have fulfilled their development goals at a certain level. Period. Devers has 160 PAs and 23 games at 3B at low-A ball. Let's give him a statistically relevant amount of time and another 50 games at 3B before we consider pushing an 18YO to high-A. Taking Bogaerts as an example, he came to Greenville in June 2011 (18YO) and spent the remainder of the year in SC. Spent April-early-August 2012 (19YO) with Salem. Split 2013 (21YO) among Portland, Pawtucket and Boston. I believe early August is the earliest you could expect a Devers promotion and think it is more likely than not that Devers will stay in Greenville all year.

There is no reason to promote Devers. Greenville being jamed is not a good reason. There is plenty for him to work on like defense, refining his approach etc. Maybe late in the season he gets a cup of coffee in Salem to get a taste of it but it's early to start thinking about promotions.

I am no expert, but I love what I have seen so far, just my 2 cents, sorry but I really disagree with your "expert" opinion. The point is that his only display of power came against non-prospect arms. His BB:K rate is way down from last year, and his OBP stinks for a guy hitting .340. I think everyone who wants him promoted (and I'm guilty of that myself some days) is WAY too obsessed with that single BA number, and is willfully ignoring the fact that he's shown only mild XB power and has had much more trouble than last year picking up pitches, which is entirely understandable. Plus, sending him to a Salem is likely to exacerbate all of those issues: better offspeed stuff, better command, a pitcher-friendly park...what happens when he gets promoted and is hitting .280/.310/.370 after two months with a 5:40 BB:K rate and zero homers? Then people are going to freak out. His trade value (I don't want him traded, but it's a team consideration) plummets. Maybe he loses confidence. Let the guy have success with the long ball and taking some walks *along* with the BA, and then he's ready to move.

For what it's worth, in a terrible one-game sample, he hit the ball hard literally every at-bat.
That said, it's also not like he didn't have a single bad swing on the day either. He can learn in Low A still.

A player can have a beautiful swing and then not be able to see and react to offspeed pitches and never make the majors. That's probably why you don't see many.

As an aside, I never quite realized how far apart some of the SAL teams are. I mean, Delmarva to Charlestown, WV is a loooooong ride. Back to the point, though: Devers is about meeting expectations for a top prospect in that league. Which is great, don't get me wrong, but it's not "oh-my-god-let's-promote-him-now" dominance. This is his first year of full-season ball, and he should lay a great foundation for success now. Kid's barely old enough to drive.

so we have a bunch of average Major Leaguers that are ranked high in the system. good to know. Devers and Chavis show choppy footwork at 3rd and don't look comfortable there. That is what coaches are supposed to correct I thought. I don't know, it seems that these players just go out and do what they want and the coaches just sit on the sidelines sipping coolatas.
