Don't think it was on this site but for drafts someone turned me on to a cool idea: Before the draft, just make a list going down to the pick number of your team (in this case 33) of that many players you'd like your team to draft. Gives you kind of a better sense of the type of guys the Sox could come up with. Yeah I have been doing that for the last few years. I used to focus on one guy and when inebitably didn't draft him I felt the let down, yes I cared about the draft enough to feel bad for a few minutes, now I focus on a bunch of players widening the chances they draft any of them.

@johnmanuelba: Scouting source has been told hoff_23 will not pitch this weekend for East Carolina. Sounds like definite setback for #mlbdraft prospect @kendallrogerspg: Other sources are saying Hoffman should be ready to go next week, and that jives what Godwin has thought the past week or so. #MLBDraft

keithlaw ?@keithlaw 21 min. Potential first-round pick @jbukauskas22 sent scouts a letter last night saying he's going to attend UNC rather than sign with an MLB team.
He's my draft binkie. Still hope we draft him and he signs anyway.

This draft just got a little more hazy. Not really. He may drop some but not all the way to the Red Sox.

This draft just got a little more hazy. Not really. He may drop some but not all the way to the Red Sox. I'm not only focusing on the Red Sox. I thought there was some separation with the top 4 and then a haze of players that could go a million of different ways. Now one of the top 4 joins the haze with an injury question mark. That's my thinking. As for Hoffman I said I thought a multi-pick team made sense and I still think that's the most probable. We'll see.

I don't think it will matter. I could easily see PHI or TOR taking him at #7 or #9. Most teams assume that pitchers will have TJ at some point.
I'd probably shift my top eleven as follows (order in my mock 1.0 in parentheses):
1. HOU - Carlos Rodon LHP, North Carolina State (1) 2. MIA - Tyler Kolek RHP (Texas Christian) (2) 3. CWS - Brady Aiken LHP (UCLA) (5) 4. CHC - Tyler Beede RHP, Vanderbilt (4) 5. MIN - Nick Gordon SS/RHP (Florida State) (10) 6. SEA – Alex Jackson C/OF (Oregon) (6) 7. PHI - Jeff Hoffman RHP, East Carolina (3) 8. COL - Bradley Zimmer OF, San Francisco (8) 9. TOR - Aaron Nola RHP, Louisiana State (9) 10. NYM - Sean Newcomb LHP, Hartford (14) 11. TOR (Bickford comp.) - Kyle Freeland LHP, Evansville (26)
At this point, I think the draft starts at pick #10.

Assuming Rodon would sign under slot, I don't see how he won't be quite attractive at #1.

amfox1I could definitely see something like that but I don't think it's quite as clear cut. Here is why: - I don't think we can assume Beede at 4. He has the talent to go there but he has been struggling with his command for more than a month now which has been his achilies heel in his college career. The cubs may want pitching but I don't think they'll force it. In his new ranking McDaniels had him at 13 which I think accurately reflects where his stock is going. If they go hitter I think that could have a trickle down effect. Anyways I'm probably putting more drama to this than it should have.

Maybe you are confusing him with Hoffman who is tha one that is injured. Rodon has been vintage Rodon the last couple of times out so he'll probably go top 2 and sign for a lot of money.

No I mean, isn't Rodon a junior? He pretty much has to sign because he can't just go back to college for 2 more years. Or am I wrong?

Appel was a senior last year and sign for slot at the top of the draft last year. Teams are more interested in getting talent than just saving money so I don't think anyone will take Rodon to play hard ball, he is the top talent in the draft and he'll get pay like that (that's from his perspective). But yes he has elegibility left he can go back and be draft eligible next year or he could go to independent ball.
Anyway I don't think any of this matters at this point. There is no reason to think he won't get paid like the top talent in the draft.

I thought you have to wait 2 years to be re-drafted. Anyway, I agree it's probably unlikely. I just assumed that college guys typically sign under slot no matter where they're drafted because of not much leverage other than holding out and not playing anywhere.

It's ok. The initial reaction when the cba changes were announced was that it would negatively affect college juniors but really hasn't been the case, the top talent is still getting paid because as I said teams are more interested in talent. Some guys have signed for underslot but not significantly. The allotments actually reflect the market value more fairly than Selig's bonus recommendations which used to be the guideline so in some cases they are getting more than it used to be. The only group the has been affected are College seniors (unless they are highly rated like Appel) but the guys that usually get squeezed in rounds 6-10 are guys that might not have been even drafted. BTW nice job amfox1 with Hoffman at 7th. Just saw on twitter that they had been scouting him heavily.

I do think Rodon has an incentive to sign this year. The way his pitch counts have been pushed by NC State I think it's sooner rather than later before he'll blow his elbow out. If it happens in his senior season I doubt he'll get what he gets this year.

Not that I want to get into a debate about pitch counts but...
@aaronfitt: Jeff Hoffman pitch counts by start: 87, 107, 109, 80, 103, 98, 90, 116, 105, 117. Restrained use, every 7 days. Still got hurt. Who knows?
Until I see a definitive study of what causes arm injuries I won't make the high pitch count = injury link. Let me rephrase it I won't be so outrage about pitch counts unless they are extreme.
In Rodon's case I don't think 130 pitches on 7 day rest is the big deal it was made out to be on twitter. The only thing I have see is that pitchers have a higher risk of injury when they are exhausted, 7-day rest seems to be enough recovery time. What I don't like is when in regionals coaches trot pitchers out there on 0 rest. That I can be outraged about.

Law has Hill at 11 and Reed at 37. Here's a little from Reeds bio and it goes on to say he's a guy who could hit 20-25 HRs and get on base at an above average clip. Reeds leading the nation in HRs(20) and slugging%.786. To go along with 33BBs-35Ks. K Law top 100 insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft/mock/?season=2014&version=2&source=keith-law-big-boardThe calling card for Reed is power; he generates a great deal of leverage from a strong lower half and above-average bat speed, capable of hitting mammoth shots to both right and center field. He's not a one-tool hitter though, as he recognizes pitches well and works counts into his favor, and while his barrel control isn't elite, for a hitter of his ilk there isn't a huge amount of swing and miss in his game.
