2014 MLB Draft discussion

Found the description of Schiraldi kind of funny for those who remember his dad's melt down on the mound during the '86 WS.
Also.. Please no more Boras picks (Fedde) in the 1st round. His amateurs generally demand well over slot and now that the team is limited, it's not worth giving them more, like with Marrero. Then tag on that he's still overcoming his injury..

I have a feeling this draft is going to be pretty unpredictable. If I had to bet I'd think that a player not currently projected to fail to #26 is there when the Red Sox pick (similar to Marrero and Barnes). I also think they take the BPA at #26 and pay no attention to the needs of the system.

Weren't Stanek and (excuse me) Manaea the guys that fell pretty far last year?

I would like Red Sox to draft Sean Reid-Foley,Spencer Adams, Luke Weaver, if they are still available. I would n't mind choosing Luis Ortiz or roll the dice on Monte Harrison.

I really like Justus Sheffield. The group of HS pitchers are grouped closely together after Sean Reid-Foley I'd say so preference might be the dertermining factor on which one teams pick. I'd say even Reid-Foley might be in that group now. I'd also be thrilled if they end up with Keaton McKinney in the 2nd round. Looking at Laws updated top 100 he has Sheffield at 21 now with an uptick in velo with plus secondary pitches. Law also seems higher on Blewett saying he has as much upside as any RHP in the class.

If we look at Sawdaye's track record or preferring big, tall pitchers then I think Forrest Griffin is someone no one is mentioning, but could be in play for one of our picks.

Isan Diaz seems like an obvious Day 2 selection for the Sox.

Chris Crawford posted his final mock
#26 Fedde :If Hoffman and Fedde are off the board, I think they would go with a bat like Fisher or perhaps AJ Reed or Casey Gillaspie. They can afford to take risks on an injured as much as any team in baseball though, so if one of them makes it to this range, I believe they’ll take the chance.
#33 Wilson

Reviewing the BA draft issue, here are some interesting thoughts of some possible Red Sox targets in the first couple of rounds...
Fedde (RHP)-pitched in Cape Cod League and Team USA last summer... FB up to 94, slender 6"4" 175 lbs... added strength getting up to 97, although sitting 90-93... good command with FB and slider... some concerns about durability...could land in the top 10-15 picks
Griffin(LHP)...6'3" 210 lbs...physical comparision to Cole Hamels.. FB 88-92, advanced change up... average CB, throws strikes with good FB command
Reed (1b)... Lead nation in HRs and slugging...lost 15 lbs over the past year... 8-2, 2.20 era as a pitcher... some scouts knock his bat speed, patient with easy swing which can get long
Blandino (3b)... hit .310 with 5 HRs over last two Cape summers... career .282 hitter at Stanford...good bat speed quick wrists... at times will overswing for power... projects fringe to average power as a result projects more at 2nd..average defender...may be athletic enough to be a utility infielder... laid back demeanor
Greenwood (ss) 70 grade power... made some mechanical adjustments this spring to quiet hitch...may be a average to below average hitter, but has special hands, looseness, bat speed and leverage...likely will move to a corner IF spot or possibly RF with a plus arm
Harrison (OF)... best athlete in draft... 6'2" 201 lbs... Nebraska FB recruit... no question about bat speed or passion for the game... very good speed and power arm... shows above-average power in BP... all-star caliber makeup with leadership qualities...
Hill (OF)... son of Dodger area scout....above-average speed with strong defensive instincts... quick stroke and strong command of the strike zone...projects for more power as he ages.... rarely swings and misses... 6' 185 lb... room to get a lot stronger
Fisher (OF)... 6'3".. profiles as a LF due to poor route running and below average arm .. doesn't always play hard...scouts give him a 70 raw power, although it has not translated much in games... hit .333 in Cape league with 6 doubles last summer
Wilson (OF)... classic high risk, high reward prospect... plus speed 6'3" wiry frame which could translate to average power as he fills out...long arms give him extention to drive balls into the gaps...needs to improve plate discipline and establish a consistent stride..

I would like Red Sox to draft Sean Reid-Foley,Spencer Adams, Luke Weaver, if they are still available. I would n't mind choosing Luis Ortiz or roll the dice on Monte Harrison. Foley is a guy I like a lot as well. However I really think he is off the board by #26. If he is on the bvoard, then he should be the clear cut choice of Cherrington. I am worried that the forearm problems Ortiz had in the spring are a sign that TJ surgery is in his immediate future. Which is bad because I like him as well. With that being said at #26 Spencer Adams seems like a perfect fit for what Cherrington looks for in a pitcher. At #33, I still hope the Sox take a flier on Burdi, despite his violent delivery.

Every year for the past 5 drafts I compile a list of the players I'd like for the Sox to draft at different slots, so I can shadow draft and follow them in a shadow Red Sox system in the future.
I forgot to post it in here yesterday and I can't access that computer now, but my Day 1 dream come true scenario is Beede/Hoffman at #26, Medeiros/Ortiz/Gatewood at #33 and Bukauskas/Papi at #67.
I'll post the entire list later on.

Some of the basketball and football video on Harrison is astonishing... Agree... check out these basketball hightlights...the slam after missing the free throw is insane... he has to be the best athlete in the 2014 draft. www.hudl.com/athlete/450737/highlights/140754375

A local paper says the Sox have been in contact with Alex Tomasovich, Charleston Southern infielder. Not on BA Top 500.
Same goes for Tyree Johnson, NC HS LHP.

I see that, to this moment, there is NOT a separate draft day thread. Does everyone anticipate simply continuing this thread for all discussion as draft day unfolds?
