Potential RHB to Platoon with Bradley?
|
Post by pedey on Nov 13, 2013 18:31:39 GMT -5
With Ellsbury a free agent, Boras his agent, and the amount of money they are looking for, Ellsbury playing in Boston next year is looking less and less likely. Probably the best option to replace him at the lowest cost is CF prospect Jackie Bradley Jr. He had a solid year in AAA last year after starting in Boston and later being optioned. However, Bradley had some difficulty at the plate this year and may struggle against lefties next year. So if the Sox were going to go into next year as Bradley as their starting CF, it wouldn't be bad to consider a right-handed bat to platoon with him.
Some potential free agents: Chris Young Rajai Davis Franklin Gutierrez
I can't really think of right-handed trade targets who are not free agents off the top of my head.
Any ideas or suggestions for a right-handed outfielder?

Add Franklin Gutierrez to that list.

Grady Sizemore is a lefty, so you can scratch him off the list.

They can also effectively platoon Bradley with a free agent right fielder by having Victorino move to center versus lefties. That opens up the possibility of signings guys like Casper Wells or Jeff Baker to fill that role.

I'm not trading Mike Carp, the primary backup to whoever plays 1B and to Ortiz, to make room for this hypothetical guy (whose bat would be hugely inferior), and reports say the Sox want to retain him, too. And I sincerely doubt they're planning to trade Jonny Gomes.
So you're looking for a backup SS who can also play RF and whose platoon split is so big that he can start in the OF against LHP, even though he can't start at SS vs. RHP. Good luck with that!

I see Chris Young as having the most value and the guy I would most want to overpay in free agency. He has the talent to start on a first division team and all of his tools (power, speed, defense) play up well off the bench.
If he can bounce back I would see him as a starter in left field, making Gomes your platoon partner with Bradley since Young could shift to center against righties. I would prefer to leave Victorino right where he is, and Young allows Victorino to play right field no matter what. Young also has the defensive chops to handle right field, unlike Nava, Carp, and Gomes.
I would give Young Marlon Byrd money and trade either Nava or Carp, whomever gets you the most trade value.
Oh, and not for nothing, his career P/PA: 4.03. I think he would fit right in.

This roster crunch also goes away if they don't re-sign Mike Napoli or sign/trade for another primary first baseman and start Carp or Nava at 1B, which is a very real possibility.

I think I may be in the minority who is ok giving him 3/39-42.

Call me crazy but JBJ has what, ~50 MLB PA (so like 10 against lefties) and we're already looking to platoon him? In the span of 8 months he's gone from the most overrated player in the entire organization to the most underrated.

The problem is we keep mixnig the two terms together.

Morse is technically a corner OF. He's with Boston in 2014 and it's probably as an either 1b, or LF position though.

I think it's a better idea to let Bradley take his lumps against lefties, take the defensive bonus, and hope there's a long term benefit. He certainly isn't going to learn how to hit them sitting on the bench. Platooning a young, talented player is really self-defeating in the long run.

Bradley had a split this year, but hadn't in 2012. It's not like he's some player who historically has gotten killed by lefties.
Some kind of fallback option would be nice, and as sammo points out, the issue here may be semantics, but getting a guy to split time with him is a bit unnecessary. It's not like it's a 30-man roster.

Chris Denorfia of the Padres could be a trade target. He can play all three OF positions.

Not that I take hot stove talk about Corey Hart any more seriously than talk about anyone else, but there have been comments that Hart is getting a surprising amount of interest for someone who missed this entire season past, and he could get a multi-year contract. Take it for what it's worth.

Excellent point by ericmvan. You also can't trade Nava to platoon Carp with Gomes, because you'd take a huge hit defensively when Gomes or Carp would have to start in right- especially at Fenway- when Victorino's hamstring acts up or anything like that. 2. If they don't re-sign Napoli, an intresting target could be Michael Young. He could share time at third with Middlebrooks and share time at first with Carp. They would still have room to add a utility infielder. 3. What's the sense as to whether JBJ is ready for the bigs or needs (at least part of) one more year in the minors? I'd hate to put a guy in a position to fail, so unless they think he's legitimately ready for the bigs, it might be better for the long-run to find a stop-gap CF (Franklin Gutierrez?). If JBJ shows he's ready, they would have the option call him up at any point during the season. Ideally Middlebrooks would be treated the same way: he'd split time at third with someone else until he proved he could be there full-time.

If they traded Carp or Nava in order to add a new backup 4th outfielder, that new player would presumably be the backup right fielder. Indeed, that's one of the main reasons trading Carp/Nava and adding a defensively capable outfielder is appealing, as otherwise the only backup outfielder on the 25-man is a bad defender (Nava or Gomes).

What about Jerry Hairston Jr? His bat isn't anything special, and at this point in his career you'd probably be better off playing Victorino in CF and Hairston in RF if it ends up being a regular thing, but he plays every position other than catcher and plays them capably, so unless/until Bradley actually shows he needs to be platooned he would be the epitome of a super-sub, and would give us a lot of roster flexibility.

Bogaerts gets 80 games at SS (the rest at third) , Peralta gets 82 at SS and all the games in LF against LHP. That's not that backuppy.

@jcrasnick: Free agent Chris Young is on the #redsox list of fallback CF options if they don't re-sign Jacoby Ellsbury
@jcrasnick: If Ellsbury leaves, #redsox could shift search to OF to bridge gap if Jackie Bradley Jr. isn't quite ready
