Let's keep this thread to Lester.

If the Dodgers offered Joc Pederson AND Corey Seager, would you do that deal? If Cherington doesn't think we have any chance at all to resign Jon and the Dodgers offered that type of package, that would be hard to turn down. Pederson and Seager and both having great years.

Looks like the Lester trade market is open.

As dandy as it would be to trade him and then sign him as a FA, I just see pretty much no chance it happens. The theory is good, and everyone is saying the right things, but if they don't sign him now, I don't see him passing up what should be at least one massive offer, likely from the Yankees, that blows away the other 29 teams valuation of him

If the MFY's want to offer him 7/$175 let them. Go. If they want to have a $400 million payroll, go for it. Buy all the top FA's.

Come on, think people.

Thats a world series for LA. especially with Jon's success in the postseason. if i was the dodgers, i would do it. and they would throw money at Lester and sign him long term

The resounding sentiment would be trading Lester only if the piece justifies the move. Moving him for a Seager or Pederson would make sense with an arm like Anderson or someone lower on the spectrum.

The only argument against trading Lester has now been dispensed with by the man himself: www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/jon-lester-willing-to-return-to-red-sox-if-traded.html"I've been there," he (Lester) said. "I've been traded. I've been given back (when the A-Rod talks fell through). I don't think anything, especially in Boston, can surprise you. Like I said, we all understand where we're at. We understand it's a business. Ben (Cherington, the Red Sox's general manager) and this ownership have to do what is right for this organization. If that means, whoever it may be, is traded for prospects, other guys, whatever, that's all part of the business side. If that's where they want to go with it, that's fine. No hard feelings. Hopefully come November, I'll be right back here and don't have to worry about it."

Lester should be hired as a PR guy by the Sox when he retires. He has been schooling them all year.

Lester should be hired as a PR guy by the Sox when he retires. He has been schooling them all year. An appropriately jaded and cynical comment for your 666th one. This is one of the problems with being a Red Sox fan - The Kool-Aid always seems to be spiked with Paranoia Punch. Maybe, just maybe, Lester means what he has already said several times - That he wants to retire with Boston.

I think Lester has been honest and the Sox have been full of crap. Not jaded at all. The best PR is to tell the truth or say no comment.

I don't think Lester could fetch BOTH Pederson and Seager. I do think he'll fetch one of them though. The Dodgers would have to be very desperate....but then again...we've seen them do crazy things before.
Could be wrong, but I think when August 1st rolls around Lester will be will the Sox. Can't say the same thing come January 1st though.
And honestly I do believe Lester when he says he wants to stay. If everything is remotely equal he'd choose to re-sign with the Sox. That's believable to me. What's not believable is that the Sox would offer him anything even remotely equal, so he will be a goner. I'd have to believe he'd wind up in pinstripes or with Theo's Cubs who have a sensational young lineup on the way but need pitching help over the next five to six years.

It's always refreshing when someone is open and honest. I'm not sure that helps Lester in negotiating with the Sox though. And I'm not sure that telling people that he would return to Boston after a trade helps the Sox get maximum return either.

If the Dodgers were to be willing to include Pederson or Seager in a deal for Lester, I would think the Dodgers would include Seager, put Pederson in CF immediately like they want to do, and make the Red Sox take on their expensive headache - Matt Kemp.
To me, that's more likely than getting Seager AND Pedersen in a deal for Lester.

I'm trying to stay level headed and let this play out, but all things considered, not signing Lester is extremely disconcerting to me. I think the team will learn and adapt, eventually, but this no longterm big money contracts philosophy could be going too far with this one. Lester should check pretty much all the boxes of a player you give that deal to and the timing is perfect from a payroll perspective.
My biggest concerns are losing the top of the rotation presence and the other people in the locker room sitting there thinking that the Sox will never pay them unless they clearly win the deal. Good luck getting guys to sign early team friendly deals when this is how you treat them. The Sox have screwed this up big time. They better go offer him at least 5/125 and early, before he gets a 6-7 year offer.
All that being said, let's not pretend Lester's camp is perfect and honest in this. All reports are that after the Sox gave the ridiculous offer of 4/70 they never even came back to the Sox with a number. First, if Lester's BBWAA dinner comments were genuine then that never should gave happend. Secondly, any agents or players getting that upset with Larry at this point need to check themselves. He's a buffoon and should be treated as such. Lester doesn't want to be here because of the front office, it's because of everything else. Assuming he's telling the truth.

From MLB Trade Rumors' Jeff Todd, which he added to his round-up of Red Sox links: Trading Lester, I would suggest, could make it somewhat more palatable to later sign him to a market-rate contract. If he could bring back a legitimate prospect haul that has some promise of near-term big league impact, it would not only increase the value of paying for a top-end arm but would offset to some extent the expected negative value of the later years of a hypothetical Lester contract. In some ways, that could be the best scenario for all involved, and Lester has said he is amenable to re-signing if he is dealt. I don't have any confidence that the Sox FO would do this - their perspective seems to be that they have a dollar value and if he walks, he walks and they spend the money elsewhere. Still, we may want to add it to the "possible scenarios" bucket (or pile or column or pool, depending on your personal data collection-allocation method)

No doubt, this idea is day dreaming. If they trade him, it is because they do not want to give him the "market-rate) price ( years and salary). Seems they realize his worth to the team though ( and should be skeptical about replacements). Will they blink either way. I am sure they have some well thought out plan of action as Jmie has put forth, but good luck with that. Many ifs and assumptions, but this is modern baseball.

However, in most cases, GMs aren't retooling their teams to "win the World Series." They're simply retooling to make the playoffs and preferably win their division so they avoid the Wild Card. From that point, as your post suggests and as Billy Beane most eloquently stated, it's all a crapshoot.

I'm flashing back to Roger Clemens (Dan Duquette deciding he was "in the twilight of his career.") Sure.
