Anyone who picks the Tigers to win the AL shouldn't be taken seriously.

Daniel Nava hit .303/.385/.445 in 2013. There are no backup right fielders that can hit .303/.385/.445 over a full season. His wOBA in 2013 was .366. For comparisons sake, Giancarlo Stanton's was .368, and Stanton is about as bad defensively as Nava. He is a perfectly sensible option for a couple of days if Victorino gets hurt. He makes up for being a below average fielder by being a significantly above average hitter. You're comparing Nava's career best year to Stanton's career worst year, and the likelihood of either of them repeating last year's performance is slim. And Stanton is a significantly better fielder than Nava according to both UZR and DRS.

It may end up being a short stay in minor league camp for Bradley. Victorino tweaked his hamstring today and is going in for an MRI.

Anyone who picks the Tigers to win the AL shouldn't be taken seriously. I'd say they're probably the best pick since they're the most likely to win their division and everything after that is basically a crapshoot.

Is Almazar making the Orioles?

Is Almazar making the Orioles? No, looks like he'll be going on the DL with knee tendinitis.

Looks like the Victorino watch has started. Maybe the past is an indicator of the future.

That is incorrect. Hanson is with the Twins; he played for Minnesota in the ST game that day. (Cannot always take the MLB transaction page at face value FYI on ST transactions).

There are exceptional baseball reporters out there, who dig for their stuff and do great work. Mastrodonato and Speier, among others, are great reads. But the long form stuff is not what I'm talking about. The talking heads rule the airwaves. That where it's all about buzz.

Unfortunately I don't think it was that simple for the Red Sox. If Abreu was willing to wait until November to market himself, then I feel the Bosox should have pounced on him. You KNOW I really, really wanted the Red Sox to sign this guy, but in fairness how would it have looked if he had signed during the World Series when the Sox are trying to win? What message would have it sent to the clubhouse and Mike Napoli? It was just rotten timing. I can't blame the Red Sox for failing to get Abreu, as badly as I wanted to see them sign him. I thought Abreu would have been perfect for the Sox.

Thanks, good article. Answer the questions I had about him being a guess hitter or not. Some posters did pick up that he was guessing and not reacting to the pitch ( bemuse he had problems recognizing the pitches). I am amazed at the sophistication and knowledge of some posers on this board.

I have to admit, for someone who wasn't very high on Middlebrooks, I'm kind of giddy at the idea of him cutting down on the strikeouts and becoming a .270/.320/.470-type hitter.

The good thing is come Monday we get to see how it starts to play out. Can't wait. I'd sign up for 2012 WMBs in a heartbeat.

I excited to see what he is capable of. Is anyone else surprised that players' vision isn't tested more often? It seems like such a critical thing would be constantly checked since even slight degradation can make such a big difference in player performance. I know my vision started to erode in my mid to late 20s.

Righto on the regular vision check up. If we have problems, we really do not notice them as we adapt. From personal experiencing I was always interested in the relative strength of both eyes. I found out later that one of my eyes was stronger than the other, and it explain why I had a certain stance hitting right handed ( more open) and why I felt more comfortable with my stance and seeing the ball hitting from the left side as that was my strongest eye.

Intrasquad game.
Maureen Mullen ?@maureenamullen 5m Buchholz: 6 IP, 1R, 7H, 3BB, 6K, 94/62 (my unofficial line).
Maureen Mullen ?@maureenamullen 1h Breslow done: 2 IP, 22/14, 0r, 1h, 1k.
Maureen Mullen ?@maureenamullen 12m Greenwell went 3x3, R v Buchholz.
ADD: Just a thought. In the first report of Middlebrooks and contacts he said he tried them one game and didn't think there was much difference and didn't know if he'd try them again. In this report, it says he wore them for the final week. He's been flat out raking for a lot longer than a week. I'm much more inclined to think the new WMB is much more a product of approach than contacts.
One other small detail that kind of puzzles me. Picking up the spin on a slider. Unless there's some kind of change in how today's sliders are thrown, a good slider makes the threads appear as a little (1/2 inchish) circle in the center. It should be the easiest to spot.

I know my vision started to erode in my mid to late 20s. It's shocking to me that Sox don't check the players' vision routinely. Boggles my mind that WMB can get this far into his career without this being noticed ... I guess maybe it's gotten worse, but still ... I'd say this is a big failure. Eyesight is so critical in baseball. I'm always so skeptical about the Magical Cure stories of spring training, but this one is genuinely exciting. This bit in Speier's story is key: I said earlier in this thread that I didn't care about Middlebrooks's offseason workout because it wouldn't "help him lay off the outside two-strike slider." Well, here ya go.
