So Houston is sending Mark Appel back to Extended Spring Training after his early struggles in Lancaster. He has a 6.23 ERA despite a 13:4 K/BB in 13 IP. I'm so glad the Red Sox don't have an affiliate at that launching pad anymore. Why would Houston even put Appel in Lancaster in the first place? He seems like the perfect candidate to go right to AA. Talent wise yes but there's still the five day routine.

Ryan Braun swings a bat on the top step of the dugout, the bat rotates a good yard into the dugout and cracks Jean Segura upside the head (knocking him out of the game and requiring stitches near his eye) and Milwaukee's manager defends Braun, saying that the incident was more Segura's fault since he was not paying attention to what Braun was doing (since Braun apparently likes to begin his warmup swings while still in the dugout). Roenicke goes on to say "I know it (the injury) bugged me all game. You hope you can prevent that. I know Brauny felt bad. But hey, it happens." What kind of bizarro land hero worship of Braun do they have going on in Milwaukee? And what the hell kind of a manager lets one of his players swing a bat inside the dugout?
Braun was dealing with an intercostal strain and was trying to get loose in the dugout to see if he could remain in the game. Ultimately he ended up leaving the game later too.

I know we're early on in the process but I wonder if Cherrington/rest of Sox front office still think Tanaka is a #3 starter, as was reported as their perceptions by a few sources (Speier, Cafardo) during the bid process? Looks more like vintage Curt Schilling early on with that splitter and low BB rate than anyone I've seen recently. FB is flaaaaat, and he he should level off second time through the league a bit, but being that he's 25 and still theoretically ascendant in his skill set, he may actually get better. Of course his arm could blow up too, but that can be said about any pitcher.
If he turns out to be a solid #2 starter (i.e. roughly a 4.5 WAR) or better starter over the first 4 years of that contract he'll be a relative bargain at $21M a year, especially considering 1) what MLB salary inflation will do to that in years 3-7; 2) that a potentially elite starter is nonexistent in the Yankee farm system (or the Sox system for that matter).
Still would've rather thrown $60M at the old posting system for Darvish and gotten him on the cheap, but this will be intriguing to watch.

Cots has him at 22 million per year and if you include the 25 million posting it takes it to basically just over 28 million per year until he can opt out.

Hey, now that he's a MFY I'm actually routing for an arm explosion, but 28M figures out to be what - roughly a 5.1 WAR pitcher? He's already 1 WAR 5 starts in. Again, waaaaay early but intriguing nonetheless.
And I think the $25M posting fee roughly comes down to a couple pieces of Tanaka gear and two season tickets down by the backstop in Skankee Stadium.

The issue is that Tanaka has basically pitched so far as well as anyone could have reasonably expected. You don't give out free agent contracts assuming that the player will basically hit his ceiling over the course of the deal. When you do, you get abominations like the Ryan Howard contract.

Oh completely agree, which is why all the "it's early" caveats.

Salty catches a two hitter by Jose Fernandez, smacks a homer and tosses in a double to boot. Higher WAR to-date this season than anyone on the Red Sox.

The guy had a lot of potential in the minors. It just takes some players longer than others to make the adjustment to the majors. There are a lot of catchers, past and present who are in that category.

Mike Trout cracks me up. You look at the box score and see he's 0-2 and figure he's getting handled. Then you notice he's got 3 walks and a stolen base. Much is said of great players being "5 tool talents." Trout is a 6 tool talent, the 6th tool being how damn smart he plays the game. That's where the constant comparisons to Harper break down. He's actually a four tool player since his arm isn't anything special. In related news, being a "five tool" player is overrated.

Jose Fernandez joins Pedro Martinez as only pitchers since 1914 to have 3 consecutive starts of at least 7 innings, 4 or fewer base runners, 8+ strikeouts and no earned runs... the guy is probably the most exciting player in baseball imo.
Also, weird first post on a Sox Forum, I know, I'm a big time fan from Australia and after reading the boards for a long time, I've finally decided to start contributing!

So MFY fans booing a. former MYF player because...he left for more money. Like George Soros whining about the Koch Brothers. Nice all the way around. Uhh noo...not at all. Soros (or Steyer for that matter) aren't even close to comparable to the Koch's and what they're doing to this country. Okay, back to baseball.

I hate to be the analogy police here (ok I don't hate it that much) but Soros and the Koch brothers subscribe to wildly different ideologies. I'm gonna say it's more like Bill Gates complaining that people spend too much time using computers these days. That was my point - Yankee philosophy has been overpaying other people's free agents; it finally happens to them and they cry foul. So 180 degree turnaround.

The Red Sox should make every one of their minor leaguers read that story about Chris Martin. You only get so many chances in life and it is up to you to make the best of them. There are so many guys who have the talent but they don't use it to the best of their ability and then one day they wake up and realize that they have to get a real job (or two in the case of Martin) to make ends meet. Good for Martin. I wish him nothing but the best.
