Hey look - more Billy Beane not settling for rebuilds but trying to win every year: insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post?id=7084?ex_cid=InsiderTwitter_OlneyAthleticsMoney(Ball) quote: They (the As) need only 17 more wins to extend another streak that might be even more remarkable: The number of consecutive seasons in which they have won at least 74 games. The last year they posted fewer than that…it was 1997.
Year after year since then, the Athletics have ranked near the bottom of the majors in payroll, given the constraints of their market, and yet year after year, they have tried to win. There is something to be said for that. They’ve tried to win, and are trying to win again this year, having swapped one of the best prospects in baseball in Addison Russell for starter Jeff Samardzija, who could help them this year and next, and Jason Hammel, who is a free agent after this season. The Houston Astros recently were pronounced the champions of baseball in 2017 on the cover of Sports Illustrated, given that they had the first pick in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 MLB drafts. They have been collecting talent, for sure, and maybe those players will translate into something good. But what if they don't?...There’s only one sure thing in the Astros’ strategy -- Houston has willfully squandered the opportunity to win games for about half a decade. To everyone who said he's in win now mode - he is. It's just that every year is now.

I remember the cover story back when the Astros were rebuilding with some kids named Biggio, Bagwell, Gonzalez, Kyle.... and the doubters said Tuffy Rhodes would never amount to anything - ha! Jeff Juden, where are you now?

I don't see how that's possible. It would be like us trading Lester for a top 10 prospect now. The difference is Samardzia will still give the team trading for him a full season, not a half, and allow said team to then at worst collect a 1st round supplemental pick which Lester will not. Exactly. There's a lot of value in that trade given the new CBA. Beane has no trouble with the arithmetic. Add: There's another factor to consider. Beane is perfectly willing to wait on ex-prospects to emerge, or on very good players to re-emerge. Once they show some of that old magic, he's on them like white on rice. He does his homework, knows the numbers, and he makes those numbers work for him. How many ways can we say this: Lowrie, Moss, Kazmir, Jaso, Crisp,... Those are all players other teams had and more or less discarded. You think there aren't more of those players out there?

At work and don't have the time, but can someone find the list of moves he was going to make if he took the Red Sox job the first time? I know it's somewhere out there. I forget what they were, but it's interesting to wonder. If somebody can find this it really has piqued my interest.

Tanaka flying to NYC for an MRI on his elbow. Not good for baseball.

Probably just some snapshots for the family.
Wonder if they did a baseline MRI when the negotiated the salary or just relied on the team/agent provided medicals?
Meanwhile, bring back PEDs - more HRs, fewer TJs.

Ken Rosenthal ?@ken_Rosenthal 2m Sources: #Reds’ Phillips out a while. Ligament issue, possible tear, in left thumb. #Nationals’ Harper missed 57 games with torn ligament.
Also, Homer Bailey left today's game with a knee injury. The Reds are getting beat up, with Hamilton, Votto and Phillips all hurt.
BTW, Kris Negron, former Red Sox prospect, was called up by CIN last night. Congrats to Kris!

Well timed for teams looking to trade away pieces though. Not celebrating an injury but rather looking at a bright side to it for us.

I forget what they were, but it's interesting to wonder. The memorable one is the catcher stuff, where he would have dealt Jason Varitek, and then traded for Mark Johnson. Johnson had huge OBPs coming up through the minors and Beane thought it would translate.

Nice bounce-back by Josh Hamilton this year, even with the injury. He looks like the player they thought they were getting.
