Interesting piece in the NY Times on the screwball, which includes an analysis of the pitch showing it puts no more torque or strain on the arm and elbow than a fastball. One of the physicians quoted, Dr. Carl Nissen, did both my ACL surgeries. Good guy.

As the current "Captain walk-it-off" some of your injury stories scare the hell out of me.

Trust me. The last time I'll derail this thread with this. True story, one Easter my grandmother had a heart attack and we drove her to the emergency room, when they thought I was the patient I figured I better have my back looked at.

One of the physicians quoted, Dr. Carl Nissen, did both my ACL surgeries. Good guy. When I was pitching a long time ago, I developed a screwball - not a very good one - but it did break away from left handed batters. The longest ball ever hit off of me was a screwball, and that was when I was a freshman in college. My elbow started to hurt like hell about that time and I could feel something loose in it. I always attributed what turned out to be bone chips - which are still there - to throwing that screwball. I could feel the pain in my elbow from twisting my arm when I threw that pitch and not when I threw other pitches, at least at first. I never pitched again after that year and never bothered to have anything done about the elbow. It still hurts at times. I just got that article and it will be interesting to read.

And recent stories reported the Mets were trying to deal Colon but it appeared they couldn't get much for him. He is amazing.

Hey look, Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight quantifies what I've been saying for a couple years about Billy Beane: fivethirtyeight.com/features/billion-dollar-billy-beane/Hopefully, now that it's stats driven, JH will read it an make him an offer he can't refuse. All this young talent in the pipeline and a changing landscape in free agency - this would be the perfect time to bring Beane in. Do it NOW!

That's interesting Dan. One of the college coaches I subsequently spoke to after reading the piece said he would love a few of his pitchers to try it but he is not confident he could find anyone to teach it to them correctly and worries about blown elbows if they do it wrong.

Beane took it, then changed his mind. It was in a bunch of books and stuff. I think Beane really does find it more rewarding to do his thing with a small-market team.

He did that because his daughter was 15 and he didn't want to move away from her. She's an adult and married now.

ADDED, from the piece: From a strictly economic perspective, not offering Beane however much money it took to get him may have been one of the Red Sox’s poorest decisions since letting Babe Ruth go to the Yankees for next to nothing. And I mean that literally: Over the past 15 years, Billy Beane has been nothing less than the Babe Ruth of baseball GMs. The Red Sox offered Beane $2.5 million per year,5 but even $25 million would have been a bargain. Now THAT would be an offer he can't refuse.

Now THAT would be an offer no one would make. Unless it wasn't their money of course.

Really wish Beane would have signed here so they could have won... 4 world series in the past decade? 5? What is the marginal addition that Beane would have brought?
