Ellsbury has always been a threat to play mediocre defense in center. He's been down a little this year but not to the point where I think he's necessarily in steep decline. It'll probably be a solid contract for another three or four years.

Not one of the worst contracts ever, but one that could go awful pretty soon if injuries mount up or if he forgets how or doesn't have the body to play center.

A's are on life support Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Agreed. Their schedule is easy. But with the way they have been hitting, nothing is guaranteed. I think they will have to win at least 12 more games to get in. Thoughts?

Bo Porter according to multiple reports. The Astros have not had a good year; however thus appears to be a step in the right direction.

Our former 1st round pick, Bryan Price made his debut for the Indians. Went an inning, Price gave up a HR to Cabrera. Welcome to the Majors.

High pitches are not called strikes so you are going to end up with more low ball hitters. 30 years ago a high hanger would get crushed or at least the attempt to crush was there. Now you do not even see guys swinging at high hangers they take them for balls.

One of the points of this article is that was true even 8 years ago, maybe less. Means a lot for our assessment of amateur and minors talent as well. This is the kind of thing that the Sox have the FO talent to unearth, and then to dig in to. They could for instance, direct their scouts to look for guys with great high fastballs.

You mean like Trevor Bauer? The article makes me think that whole Effective Velocity article someone (JMEI?) linked to a while back, is a thing that could be exploited by a team willing to invest completely in a new style. [Billy Beane most likely, he already did some cool stuff with flyball hitters throughout his entire damned lineup]

This is good news for the Diamondbacks but bad news for Ruben Amaro, who is now pretty much lapping the field as baseball's worst GM. Towers, who seemed to generally do a pretty good job with the Padres, became sort of head of the baseball consortium of the Flat Earthers, basically denying sabermetrics and focusing more on grit and throwing at opponents as a team-building strategy. He probably inadvertently pushed baseball into the 21st Century though. A few years back, hiring the next Billy Beane was scary - the Dodgers got ripped apart by the media during the DePo era. Now, though, hiring someone as aggressively anti-intellectual as Towers would be poison.

He's a class act, no doubt about it. Too bad that Seattle traded away so much talent during his time with the team. They should have had an outfield patrolled by Adam Jones, Shin-Soo Choo, and Ichiro, with Tillman taking the mound along with Hernandez. A serious bid for Beltre when his contract was up, and who knows?
