I really don't see how the Rays remain in Tampa 10 years from now. It really should be sooner, but with no obvious location already set/stadium built, 10 years should be more than enough to move.
Friedman/Maddon kept that franchise above water and competitive much longer than they probably should have, but the talent is no longer there, and the fans have never really bought in enough to go to the Trop regularly. The stadium is trash, the owners have no desire to upgrade the current facilities, and little to no interest in figuring out a way to build a new park in the area.

Well, the wild card chances of the rest of the teams in the AL East will certainly go up with the Implosion Of The Rays. We just need the Blue Jays to start sucking really badly, and we'll be back in business, with the Yankees perpetually mediocre ...

Gotta throw it out there. Farrell to a front office position - to which he's long admitted aspiring - and Maddon as new manager. OK, turn on those flame throwers. Why would you get flamed for that? That's far from the dumbest idea I have heard on this board. I think it's more likely that he goes to the Dodgers as that would be the most obvious landing spot.

Jeff Passan @jeffpassan · 1h 1 hour ago Dodgers are indeed out on Joe Maddon, as @ken_Rosenthal said. Not happening. Period. Cubs and Mets considered by friends to be favorites. Dylan Hernandez @dylanohernandez · 2h 2 hours ago Andrew Friedman: Don Mattingly will manage the #Dodgers next season. Joe Maddon's availability won't change that. But: Jeff Passan @jeffpassan · 59m 59 minutes ago One Maddon confidante believes he wouldn't have opted out without a sense of what the market would bear. And he wants to go big market.

Friedman has already gone on record to Dylan Hernandez (LA Times), vis twitter that the Dodgers will not be among the suitors for Maddon's services. The team has said before that Don Mattingly will manage the team in 2015.

It's hard for me to take GMs with managers under contract at face value on this. Someone isn't going to say "yes, Maddon is a consideration" only to miss out on him, for reasons that I think are obvious.

From Twitter: Jeff Wilpon tells @jonheymancbs #Mets are not changing managers. So there is that. #Cubs went from clear to runaway faves for Maddon
Looks like Theo might be picking him up. It's pretty amazing to think the Rays imploded so quickly. I guess it was bound to happen at some point.

The Rays still have a pretty good major league roster, and I wouldn't write them off. Cobb, Archer, Odorizzi, Smyly, and Moore are a good, young rotation, and while Longoria (and Zobrist, to a lesser extent) are the only real studs on the position player side, they have a ton of potential average to better guys in Hanigan, Escobar, Loney, Jennings, Kiermaier, and Joyce. That's not to mention potential breakout guys in Franklin and Myers. The farm is very thin behind them, but the major league roster is young and pretty talented.

Shocking news, but the part in bold is NOT true. The ownership has been trying very hard to get out of that ridiculous lease and have been looking into other sites for awhile. Actually there is the potential to have an agreement before the New Year on a new site and an agreement with St Pete. I'm sure Joe has gotten tired of waiting and being paid peanuts with respect to inferior managers. He is that good. These players adore him and have ran through walls for him for a long time. I would hate to see him end up in LA. I am worried, for the 1st time, about the Rays surviving. This is stunning!!

Assuming Maddon does manage this year and he wants a big market club would the Cubs really fire Renteria after 1 year? The Mets won't pay for him. There really aren't alot of big market teams out there left
1). Detroit - have to fire Ausmus 2). LA Angels - would he replace Scoscia 3). Boston - would Ben convince Farrell to go upstairs? 4). Washington - have to fire Willliams 5). Philly - he's too smart for that. 6). Colorado - they're terrible..but they may throw a ----load of cash at him.
I am gonna say the favorites are:
1). Washington 2). Angels 3). Boston

I would hate to see him end up in LA. I am worried, for the 1st time, about the Rays surviving. This is stunning!! I think you're giving Sternberg too much credit. He wants the city/state to build him a new stadium, doesn't he? He's not looking to put any of his own money into this, is he? However, I don't think a new stadium is really the answer. The Rays have a relatively small local market, but a potentially huge regional market. Unless there is a site that is easily accessible to both Tampa-St. Pete and Orlando, a new stadium won't solve anything. For the Rays to compete they need to exploit the massive television market (significantly larger than the Sox market) they sit in. The best way to do that would be to sign a free agent or two and go from being a 90 win runner up to genuine 100 win contender. The problem is this comes with the risk of losing money some seasons, and Sternberg doesn't appear to feel any obligation to take a risk to improve his product. He made $800 million as a partner at Goldman-Sachs and has seen the value of his franchise more than double without any additional investment of his own money. The Rays had 8 top 4 picks and 10 number one picks in a decade -- a nice subsidy from the other 29 teams. If their ownership had made an investment in a couple extra players instead of comfortably extracting a profit commensurate with that of the Yankees and Red Sox -- both of whom invest in their product -- the Rays might now be sitting on substantial TV, radio and merchandising revenue. There are small market teams who merit sympathy; the Rays do not. Note: profit comment was based upon Forbes annual team value assessment of operating profit; I may have misinterpreted this.

They have no desire for a non-public financed ballpark in St. Pete. That should have been a better way to put it. It's the same situation the Marlins were in. But the Miami Dade County judicial system is a disaster and they pushed through public financing for the new Marlins park, one that could run the city/county $2B by the time it's paid off
A new stadium also isn't the answer, they know this. I don't blame them. If they have to finance a stadium, it sucks almost any profit from it. If the city funds it, it's all profit

St. pete kept saying that any possibility of them allowing them out had to have the Rays out couldn't have the Rays on the TB side of the Bay.. Even better at the old Fairgrounds locale where they might have been able to draw from orland and had ALL of central Florida to draw from. The St. Petersburg council was preferring to let the Rays leave the area, over working with them to make anything work.

Tampa no longer deserves a MLB franchise with their declining attendance and poor facilities. There are plenty of other top 20 cities which could support a MLB franchise, including San Antonio, Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Columbus. The Rays are going to free fall even more now that Friedman and Maddon are gone.
PS- count me in the camp who does not want to see Maddon as the next Red Sox manager. His hipster act is quite tired and the whole air about him being the smartest guy in the room is only slightly less annoying than Bobby V.

I hate Maddon and his stupid hair, don't want him anywhere near the Red Sox.

Not that I thought this needed to be answered but John Henry just shut down any Maddon-Red Sox link.

That's just the saddest news in quite a long time. He seemed like such a solid kid and that swing was beautiful. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Awful. I had to read the headline a few times before I could wrap my brain around it. Taveras' girlfriend was also killed in the crash.
