Here's a 3 pitch vine of the 17 year old pitcher we were discussing a few weeks ago. Dodger's Julio Urias. vine.co/v/MbYzzF6gH2aThat catcher sure looks familiar.

And so it begins espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10617099/jacoby-ellsbury-new-york-yankees-scratched-lineupI loved to watch him play, but I never felt he would be resilient enough to be worth the big contract. It was too risky that he wouldn't play enough. They are playing this down and that's fine. But my bet is that he will miss 30 games this year and 50 next year. And at some point in the next 3 years he will be on the 60 day DL. The end of this contract will likely be ugly. He was exciting to watch and yet I am happy that we didn't commit $150M.

How strong is that limb? I think most agree it was too much money and aren't upset the Sox didn't sign him or he didn't take half that to stay here, but this story means nothing. Let's him start missing real games with injuries first.

I'd say low. The story mentions that the team hadn't been doing any analysis just a few years before. That doesn't sound like the Sox.

Maybe the Cubs reference at the end was a Fruedian clue. Would coincide with Theo's arrival bringing a saber minded approach to the organization. Boston's always been ahead of the game with saber metrics and the article mentions you wouldn't have expected it five years ago from the team.

Hope it was a glancing blow nothing more. I'm sure there will be extensive testing to see if there's any effects.

Hope it was a glancing blow nothing more. I'm sure there will be extensive testing to see if there's any effects. That would be nice but there have been several tweets that say square in the face, not glancing. At this point we'll all be waiting for the scans to know anything concrete. Always hate to see this stuff, wouldn't wish it on a Yankee. There's also a video but I elected not to post it but I'm sure anyone curious can find it. It was bad. Timothy Burke ?@bubbaprog 3h Given @ra_Parker's video is at 30fps, and the ball takes 10 frames to reach Chapman, we can estimate it traveled at ~112.5 mph

A great grantland write on the yankee's infield. grantland.com/the-triangle/mlb-warning-new-york-yankees-infield/"...finally looked at his infield depth chart and realized, whoops, the infield is a thing that needs good players in it, too. But at that point, there was nothing left to do but turn his pockets inside out, shrug, and say, “$417 million doesn’t go as far as it used to.”..." "...think happy thoughts about the return of Mark Teixeira, ... we’ll pretend not to be aware of his steady devolution into a slick-fielding Steve Balboni." "..At short, the Captain will provide an insatiable hunger for winning, up to seven innings of defense in one direction per night (excluding the “left” direction)..." "We are now done considering the good parts of the infield." "Should the ball be hit to second base, on most nights it will be handled by Brian Roberts, who is holding up surprisingly well for someone who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1944 because his failed physical left him unable to serve in the war" "And at third, keeping the base warm while its serially disgraced former caretaker gallops through the poppy-flecked centaur fields of exile, is Kelly Johnson... He is also not a third baseman, in the traditional sense of “a person who has frequently played third base.”" this is going to be a very fun year to be a yankee anti-fan. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

He is also not a third baseman, in the traditional sense of “a person who has frequently played third base.”" this is going to be a very fun year to be a yankee anti-fan. LET THE GAMES BEGIN! Rooting against the Yankees for me is almost as enjoyable as rooting for the Red Sox. Whenever I exhaust all Red Sox coverage I always turn to Yankee news. I'm never spiteful about it, I don't root for players to get hurt or anything, but I would say I follow Yankee baseball more than the typical Yankee fan. Yanks do have a lot of questions. They have good outfield depth, and their rotation at the MLB level is solid, but lacks depth. Infield and Bullpen are terrible, both in terms of talent and depth. If they were to lose someone like Jeter, Tex, or Robinson there really is no replacement on their team. They would be up a certain creek without a paddle. They also have 5 players looking for rest time at DH; Soriano, Beltran, McCann, Jeter, and Tex. That 's not going to work, and that is the middle of their lineup. Once you remove one of that group the lineup isn't that scary. Big thing I am following is the cash. This is an important year for the Yankees to reignite the fan base. WSJ did an article that estimated Yankees lost 50M in ticket revenues by missing the playoffs. online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303997604579238550215265832 . That is what was really driving their spending spree. The Yankees have more to lose by missing the playoffs than any other team in the league, and they are projected to miss it for the second year straight. Next year doesn't look any better for them. A-Rod will add 20M+ back onto the payroll, Jeter and probably Kuroda will be gone, CC will be a year older and Robinson (and Soriano) will be a FA. About the only part of relief they will get is Ichiro coming off the books, and that is small change in the whole scheme of things. This coupled with a barren farm system, who's top prospect is blocked by McCann. Missing the playoffs the next two years coupled with the savings they missed by blowing past the payroll tax might change the way Yankees build their baseball team.

They would be up a certain creek without a paddle. When you say Robinson, you don't mean the guy who was signed by the Mariners, do you? EDIT: I realize this is a typo and you meant Robertson, but it was too ironic to not point out.

This is much better than what might have been: MLB ?@mlb 17m #Reds LHP Aroldis Chapman to have surgery today to repair fracture above left eye, out 6-8 weeks. Eye on Baseball ?@eyeonbaseball 1h Aroldis Chapman update: mild concussion, having surgery to repair bone, eye okay, no other brain injury. Out 6-8 wks cbsprt.co/1d468km

The GIF in that article of Captain Jetes feebly waving at a ground ball as it bounds happily into centerfield is hilarious ... forget Xander, I swear, any of the Sox starting infielders outside of Napoli could've gotten to that ball from the shortstop position. Jose Iglesias could field that ball right now with two broken legs. edit to add: I will say, though, that I'm starting to think the Yankees might be a little better than I thought. The pathway for them to have a good rotation is a lot clearer than I thought ... Kuroda, Tanaka, Pineda, Nova, and Sabathia could actually be a pretty formidable rotation, if it all breaks ok for them. They've got no depth, but with a little luck, that's pretty good starting pitching. They still have a terrible infield, an underwhelming bullpen, and no depth on their team at all, but if they're lucky with injuries, especially to their starters, they may be an ok team.

Bruce Rondon is joining the crew of those who are having TJ surgery. Disappointing because he's fun to watch and throws so hard, but not entirely surprising considering how high-stress his delivery is/was.
