I wouldn't necessarily say that Holt is a better defender than Herrerra. Herrerra hasn't acquainted himself well at 3B this year, but he definitely is a better shortstop defender than Holt is, and Farrell stated that the reason he made the roster over Holt is that his defense at 3B is better, too.

Holt wasn't a bad defender last year, nothing flashy but nothing glaring either. His bat was the bigger question. Maybe it's just me but Herrera seems to need an attitude adjustment, the effort doesn't seem to be there and he seems like a bit of a hot dog.
Yeah I know, armchair psychology which I hate. I'll have to admit, I'm somewhat swayed by the car wash incident which doesn't sit well with me. I'm pretty sure the Sox pulled a behind the scenes Michael Jackson defense.
Also, given the youth of Xander and the injury history of WMB, 3rd base might actually be the more important position for the utility role.

Holt is much better at 3B. Herrerra might be better as a middle infielder but he is really bad at 3b.

“@jtomase: Uehara says he had same injury in Texas and it sidelined him for 2 months. He doesn't expect this case to be that serious. But still, gulp.”

The Sox might wait until after Doubront's next start to decide how they are going to play this. I'm not uncomfortable with Mujica (or Tazawa or Miller) closing. The move could hypothetically be Koji to the DL, Felix to relief and Webster or RDLR to the rotation.

The move could hypothetically be Koji to the DL, Felix to relief and Webster or RDLR to the rotation. More likely Workman would be recalled and work out of the bullpen. This injury to Koji is very worrisome. Koji has been virtually unhittable and locks down just about every single game he's there to save. I have a feeling 2014 will see a lot more significant injuries this season than the Sox experiences in 2013. They got bombarded with injuries the prior three seasons so 2013 felt like a makeup - sort of like getting slammed with snow for two or three winters and then having a light winter. Hope Mujica is up to the task to close. I hope we see the pitcher he was tonight rather than the pitcher he was against the Brewers.

For a lack of a better place to put this:
@jcrasnick: Some teams believed to have interest in Joel Hanrahan: #yankees #mets #angels #rangers #rockies #royals #redsox #athletics #rays

It sure is good that Koji was able to get some work in defending a 4-run lead in the 2nd game of the season, though.
Also, apparently Andrew Miller started warming up when McCann stepped to the plate (last batter in the 8th). Do Farrell and Nieves have a game of saying random names into the bullpen phone just for the hell of it or something?

Peter Gammons ?@pgammo 40m All the 2013 AL East closers--Rivera(&Robertson), Johnson, Uehara, Janssen, Rodney--were retired, hurting or traded by April 11
I'm thinking that of all the AL East teams, the Sox are in the most likely position to weather this storm.

The Red Sox had a lot of injuries last year which caused time lost. They just covered up for it. They lost arguably their 3 best bullpen arms (per start of season expectations).
Like people said, it's better Koji miss time or gets rest now than later in the year. Everyone else is healthy right now and Koji will be necessary in the playoffs if they make it.

However, if Workman, doesn't that undermine the whole idea of stretching him out. At least in the short term (15 day stint - don't want it), they have bullpen options in AAA they can fall back on. Mujica should be able to handle closer temporarily.

We did have some injuries last year that hurt as well - Miller, Buchholz, Papi, Ross, etc. I forget who it was that said this, but I agree that if we can just make it through April at around .500, we'll be okay once we start to get Brooks and Shane back.

Is it just me or has the strike zone been pretty atrocious this year? Worse than usual. Ready for robot strike zones...

I think its pretty obnoxious when the two teams have different strike zones. It was really obvious with Lester in the 7th he wasn't getting some of the calls CC was. Its even worse for small market teams like Oakland, I've watched some of those games and they get ump jacked regularly.

Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 34m
Pedroia 2B, Nava RF, Ortiz DH, Napoli 1B, Carp LF, Bogaerts SS, Pierzynski C, Herrera, 3B, Bradley Jr., CF, Lackey RHP.
Carp in LF in Yankee Stadium? That's about as bad as AGon in RF in Fenway.

I got stuck listening to Michael Kay last night. Defensive metrics for catchers came up. Surprise, surprise, surprise. The Yankees catchers are credited with framing the most amount of pitches out of the strike zone and getting called strikes. Kay quickly praised McCann because it's because of him of course. David Cone did mention there are some other variables.

He's old and has a lot of mileage on his arm. We're lucky he even made it through the 2013 playoffs to be quite honest. Sounds precautionary, but a DL trip may not be a bad idea. I'd be very comfortable with Taz closing. Pete Abraham ?@peteabe 38s Koji out with a stiff shoulder. Day to day, Farrell says. No plans for detailed exam/MRI yet. I didn't catch all the episodes....Is Obiwan still alive?

I doubt Carp being more comfortable in left makes up for the far greater amount of ground he'll need to cover.
