if we want an offense that can contend in 2013, then I think VMart, KMorales, or MMorse would be a solid addition for the #3 spot at 1B. Neither would be easy to acquire, but they fit the mold of our team and could be available at a reasonable price.

I think the sox should trade for Ike Davis given that we don't give up any of our top guys. He's only 25 (still young) has good power and isn't bad defensively. He's worth the risk. We have nobody in the minors at 1B. Travis Shaw is the only real prospect right now. Either that or maybe we could try Sands at 1B with Gomez. I'm not ready to count out a kid who produced at the high levels of the minors and is only 25 just yet.

Someone on OTM suggested Andrew Miller, Blake Swihart and Stolmy Pimental for Ike Davis.
I think it is a good premise but wouldn't want to give up Swihart just for the tools and the position he plays potential. But I think we could make a deal without giving up Swihart and that I would do.

Logan Morrison, good buy low candidate on the edge of putting it all together, but he really needs to get into a different baseball market. A few technical/approach adjustments and he could become the stud many predicted a few years back. Pair him with a Youkilis signing and worst case is you get one of the two to solve first base, best case is you get leverage in negotiations for a LF/Upton acquisition.

Great personality. He was actually nominated for the Robert Clemente award this year. Buy low candidate with pretty big upside. I'd be all for it.

Really like LoMo and Adams. Morrison might be cheaper and I'm not sure we match up well with STL. About the only hole I see is SS.

I'd think he'd be perfect in the #5 hole after Cabrera and Fielder. Young won't be back next year with them and V-Mart is a big upgrade over Young. I think Morse could be good. Morneau and Davis are good targets. The Adams kid blocked in St. Louis could be a good target. Lance Berkman, if he isn't retired, could be a consideration. I'd think the 1b would be a lefty given that the Sox now suddenly are light from the LH side of the plate, and of course if a platoon were needed, the Sox now have Sands.

Throughout all of this I feel a little bad for Lars Anderson. We didn't need a first baseman at the time because we had Gonzo but now we need one and he could have had a shot at the job. Now he's in the Cleveland minor league system rotting away and likely won't be given a shot. He's a good defensive player and never really had a full shot in the majors. Hopefully Tito will see something and give him a shot.

He'd probably have a better shot if Tito WERE NOT the manager. He's certainly seen plenty of him over the last few years.

Justin Morneau, to me, is a player we can trade for and not need to send a lot back in return. He probably will never be the player he was in 2008 and 2009, but he has, at least, been THAT player.
The Twins need almost everything, but they probably will want pitching in return. Would Melancon, Pimental, and Couch be enough? Don't forget: Morneau is a free agent in 2014, Mauer needs to play 1st base more, and he is owed $14 million for 2013.

I don't think we're going to be able to acquire a good first baseman without giving up something of value. We can't just offer a team pocket lint and coins from between couch seats. People like Melancon, Pimental, Couch, Andrew Miller et sim. have very little trade value (Pimental and Miller may have a little but not much). I'd love to think we could trade Miller and de Jesus to St. Louis for Adams, because they need both MI and LHRP, but they are not going to give up something of value for something of no value. To trade for a good #3 SP, a RF, LF, or 1b is going to require giving up someone we like.

I can really see the Twins wanting to use the $14 million owed Morneau to improve their club on other ways and......to get Mauer more playing time there. For them, freeing up that money may be the MOST important thing. I've mentioned the idea before about bringing back Youk for one year. It is mentioned today at ESPN Insider: "The Chicago White Sox on Tuesday declined their $13 million option on Kevin Youkilis, making the former Red Sox third baseman a free agent. OK, let?s address the obvious question -- is a reunion in Boston possible?
ESPNBoston.com reports that scenario had not been raised by either party as of Wednesday morning. Youkilis spent almost nine seasons in Boston before shipped to the South Side in late June.
Zach Stoloff of NESN.com says it?s a possibility that should not be completely written off.
First of all, the Red Sox have parted ways with manager Bobby Valentine, whose relationship with Youkilis was beyond repair. Secondly, the Red Sox need a first baseman after Adrian Gonzalez was sent to the Dodgers in a cost-cutting move.
While we're at, maybe the 33-year-old Youkilis might consider a reunion with new Indians manager Terry Francona in Cleveland. The Tribe could use an improvement at first base and parted ways with designated hitter Travis Hafner on Wednesday.
One red flag in all this was Youkilis? declining numbers this past season: .236, 15 homers in 80 games in 2012. His next employer won?t be paying in the $13 million range. "

I think Napoli would be my number 1 target. Would kill it in Fenway and pretty good splits. .845 OPS career vs RHP. BC said he wants more guys who get on base too.

I have a feeling this will come to fruition. I do think the Sox will somehow wind up with Torri Hunter and Mike Napoli. The only question I have about Napoli is would it strictly as a 1b or as a catcher or both? Napoli reminds me a lot of a guy the Sox had about 15 years earlier - Mike Stanley - good power, low BA, excellent OBP skills, not so good defensively - although, watching the 2011 World Series, I always felt Napoli got a bad wrap defensively. Ideally, I'd like to see a left handed stick like Morneau at 1b or Kendry Morales or Ike Davis and Napoli behind the plate with Lavarnway remaining as the backup and Salty dealt away for some pitching or OF help.

I would think 1B and try to keep him healthy and in the lineup. He has never played over 140 games. I would worry about his D but Fangraphs has him at -3.4 UZR/150 for his career. Should be intersting to see what his market is since the Rangers didn't even offer him the 13.3 million. If they didn't even want the chance at him returning at that price for one year I don't see him getting too much. Maybe 3 yrs at 10 per?

For Napoli? Gosh I hope not. I don't see anybody giving him 3yrs. 1yr with a team option is the most I think the Red Sox should go on him (if they decide to go that route).

He can serve several purposes not the least of which is 1B. Regarding Hunter, we may have competition as the Yankees apparently are interested. www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/yanks-eyeing-hunter-worried-adding-age-article-1.1195505

If it comes down to a bidding war with the Yankees, they can have Torri Hunter.
My question is this: what kind of talent would it take to obtain that young 1b Adams out of the Cardinals organization? I would think they'd need pitching or middle infield help. Iglesias and/or Doubront, perhaps? What would they be looking for?

Morales or Morneau. All they would effectively cost is money ( primarily ) and they both have potential to be significant contributors. Both might provide adequate short term performance until we are in a position to acquire a mega stud for that slot. I am not digging Mauro's defense and I don't think we want to hurt everyone else's defense in that infield with him at 1st, especially with Middlebrooks and Iglesias on the left side potentially. I think I'd be looking mainly for a short term solution which can maybe help us get competitive next year without costing much in terms of prospects.

Napoli is #3 and down my list because of defense. It is also possible that one of these guys reverts back to a very solid offensive alternative. There is so little out there. I believe even a left-handed bat may be more preferable at this moment for the line-up.
