Of the current SoxProspects top 20, #s 1,2,3,4,7,8,11,15 &16 were high school draftees.

Played little league ball against Adam Ravanelle, a pitcher from Vandy and Beede's good friend. He'd be a good pick in the coming rounds. He's a sox fan to boot.

Very impressive to be able to get a guy that some call the 2nd best prep bat in the draft all the way at 26
Christopher Crawford (ESPN Insider) just posted his analysis, and called Kopech's floor a "high leverage reliever." Either he has a different definition of floor or I'm just very confused

Is the excitement for the selections based on value or the fact that the Red Sox did not reach for college bats as many feared before the draft?

I didn't follow this draft nearly as closely as I have some others, so I didn't really know anything on Chavis pre-draft, but I'm really impressed with his scouting video. That bat speed is going to play and I have little doubt he'll hit for some pop as well. He also seems to have excellent reflexes (someone mentioned he is viewed as a quick twitch guy), which will allow him to be effective on defense all over the diamond. He is somewhat stocky and doesn't look to have a lot of room for growth in his body, but I think that is a market inefficiency if anything. If he was more long and lean with the same skill set he would have gone much higher in the draft.
As far as where he ends up on defense, I would say: 5% Catcher, 5% SS, 40% 2B, 40% 3B, 10% OF.... I think he has a shot to be at least average everywhere except SS.

I wrote that back on May 19, so I'm pretty ecstatic with how the draft turned out. Kopech could really blow up in Greenville next year, and Travis should hit his way through the low minors really quickly. Very good start for the Sox. Here are Travis's splits courtesy of CollegeSplits.com. On Friday's, which is when college teams throw their ace, Travis hit .389/.443/.722 with six walks, six strikeouts, and five home runs. Very impressive.

Billy Butler would be okay... better than Mark Sweeney, anyway. Time to spend some serious time figuring out what it will take to sign those guys. Sounds like that Sox MIGHT have gotten through three rounds with net money to spend after figuring the 10%. Of course, they ate that extra money last year when Denney signed for a couple six packs and Boldt decided to make the Big Ten All-Freshman team for Nebraska. Let's be honest here. If Travis ends up being nearly as good as Mike Sweeney this is still a good pick. Hell if you draft 2-4 guys that make the majors it's still considered a solid draft. But damnit I wish the Sox signed Boldt

The best thing about the baseball first year player draft?.......waiting up all night to NOT find out your team traded away their picks.

Having never seen any of the draftees play, I rely on those in the know here. My spirits are buoyed by the general consensus that we have done alright for ourselves to date.
It seems that the "crap-shoot" label that used to be assigned to the MLB draft has become much less so at least in terms of predictable range for player selection. The prospects that were identified by Law, Mayo, Olney, BA and countless others are pretty much in concert and the way the draft unfolded underscored that.

Mike Sweeney was much better than Mark Sweeney Before he got hurt, he was better than Butler also. I'm with jmei about Travis. Watching footage had me thinking Shaw, hopefully with a better bat in his hands as he wrote, but little upside. Chavis is a very different story. That is a live bat. Watching him, its hard to believe that's a high school tool. Fluid and explosive at the point of contact, great follow through, natural loft, high liners that could easily turn into HRs as he matures. (add: and superior bat speed going back and reading what chavo wrote) Kopech is the most intriguing. Just from the footage I've seen, that's a serious power pitcher with surprising secondary stuff. Could be wrong, but I don't think it's going to take that much to tighten everything up. He's more advanced than Ball in my opinion.

Where do Chavis, Kopech, and Travis fit into the current prospect rankings?

The most amazing this about day 1 - Temple loved it.
Great to see two high upside HS kids added to the system. Not sure we could have done much better with available options.

Where do Chavis, Kopech, and Travis fit into the current prospect rankings? They won't be ranked until they sign, but my guess is that they'll slot in somewhere between 9 and 25 (Chavis on the higher end of that, Kopech in the middle range, and Travis towards the end). Personally, I'd slot Chavis between Marrero and Johnson, Kopech just ahead of Mercedes, and Travis just behind Shaw.

If we have Travis ahead of Shaw then we'd have Travis Shaw which sounds more natural. More good info from familiar names: SpeierAndrews

Kopech just turned 18 April 30th; only four months older than Callahan was when he was drafted at 17 in 2012.

Law pegged us as one of four teams that got good value on Day 1 along with Cleveland, Arizona, and Toronto. He notes that Sam Travis was one of his favorite hitters in the college crop. Link (subscriber only) Maybe somewhat of a surprise, but he actually listed Milwaukee as one the "losers" teams. He doesn't seem to be a fan of the risk associated with their picks but does note that Harrison at pick 50 is good value.

Where do Chavis, Kopech, and Travis fit into the current prospect rankings? Mike Andrews writes: Translated to the SoxProspects scale, that's a 6 projection with a 7 ceiling, which would mean he would slot in at #8 behind Cecchini and ahead of Vazquez. That's a 4 projection with a 6 ceiling, which would likely place him at #15 (or #17 after Chavis and Kopech are slotted in) behind Devers but ahead of Britton. It's possible, of course, that Andrews was being a bit enthusiastic in his quick reaction and expectations will come down a bit in the next few days.

It all depends on how you view Medeiros. Some were raving about him and others had him lower. I heard that he really blew Brewers away at a work out. If Brewers vie him as a top 20 pick and sign him underslot they have to feel very good about the pick. Same way with Cubs at #4.
Gatewood is interesting as a boom/bust talent. It's a bet on his power upside, which is there. Some people think he can stick at SS but I don't see it.
