If Napoli and Ortiz get going, the league should watch out. I truly believe that this team could turn it around offensively, pending the addition of someone like a Mookie Betts and X-Man getting back to his usual approach.
Also, Lackey has been great this season (and who am I to talk), but you can't go up there firing fastballs 90% of the time and expect to sneak a low 90's first pitch meatball past Seager.

Good thing the Sox got two runs off of Felix. Something seems to falter every game

You know, I would have bet anything that Endy Chavez wasn't still playing in the majors.

They are just playing a better team at this time. A little surprised though about Lackey's melt down.

They have the team to lose 90 games this season, but I'm optimistic that they'll fall just short of that.

Xander OPS:
As SS: .816 OPS As 3B: .523 OPS
Smooth decision-making all-around. Always tinker with your franchise player.

Xander OPS: As SS: .816 OPS As 3B: .523 OPS Smooth decision-making all-around. Always tinker with your franchise player. But is it really as simple as that? And if it is, what precedent is there to suggest that the move to 3B would negatively affect Bogaerts on the other side of the ball? It's a bold statement to say that if he was still playing SS the 21 year old in his first full year playing in the majors would still be hitting like one of the best players in the league.

But it's probably a fair statement to make that if he wasn't forced to make the switch, a move which he was aggrieved with in public, he would probably be hitting better than one of the worst players in baseball.
Not only did Bogaerts lock in defensively in May, he was also having the most consistent plate appearances of any player on the team. I don't think it's a stretch saying that the move affected him mentally.

I think Ben looked at the team at the time, said we are not getting it done with this alignment, what are our best options, and they came up with Drew to SS, Bogaets to 3B. They invested some money to try to improve the team and took on very little risk. It's not working out for them so they are going to take some heat, but it's not like they made some crazy baseless decision that directly hurt the team.

I don't think so, no. But if you'd like to present some data (with a sample size > 1 player) to convince me, feel free.

Yeah, he locked in on D and O right after the Drew signing. He's not fully mentally mature. He needs to be. I don't think caddying a 21 year old is a good thing. Kid needs to learn how to play baseball, and to be an adult. I think the move to third, and learning how to suck it up is the best thing for him. I also thought signing Drew was a good idea, as did ton's of (now quiet) people on this board. They might as well trade him now though... if he has any value.

I'll 'fess up, I did want Drew signed, though maybe I should have looked more closely into how hard it is for mid-season signings to get up to speed. I also think it was incredibly stupid of the Sox to make any sort of promise to Drew/Boras as to how much time he would be spending in the minors. Ridiculous to call him up before he's ready. Anyway, yes, move him to the Tigers ASAP.

Easier said than done. Detroit isn't taking Drew unles Boston is paying for him and taking nothing back in return. At this point? He's a CARE package.

Like I said, it was a move they made to a scuffling team to try to improve the offense. It's not working out, but that doesn't necessary mean it was a bad decision at the time. There is to much criticism of it if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, everything should be examined, but chalking up the typical ebbs and flows of baseball to the complete evaluation of management is a mistake. It's only been a month since the signing, and Drew spent some time in the minors.
As for Bogaerts not performing as a 3B, I get it, but no where near to the extent it is being played off as. I look at it as a young kid who has to spend a little extra pregame time prepping at a new position instead of focusing on his hitting, and maybe some of that carries over to batting. But it is not a 300 OPS difference. Not even close. Frankly if you are suggesting that is true I wouldn't consider Bogaerts a cornerstone player anymore. Baseball players have to be flexible, versatile, and put the team first. If a position move as a rookie for half a season cause him this much dismay what is next? Is he going to have a George Costanza meltdown when the hotel in Baltimore short sheets him?

The ironic part is that sending those 2 down and leaving Doubrant and bucholz in the rotation is also the quickest way to get the Sox out of the W/C race, which is funny in many ways.. Send down the kids that have been superior for the struggling vets, the vets implode further and the team falls even further out and those 2 kids get the call back, plus more when the FO can finally get away with the casual fan of ditching the season and call up the future Sox core players.. being Betts, possibly cecchini, or Marrero if they feel hi is Bogaerts partner and Vazquez. A shame they don't go ahead and do it right now to get them all a half season under their respective belts and more prepared for the 2015 season.

A shame they don't go ahead and do it right now to get them all a half season under their respective belts and more prepared for the 2015 season. The long term plan (well the one in my head anyway) depends desperately on being able to call RDLR and Workman "veterans" next year. That allows you to lose Lester (which I sadly think will happen) and move Doubront to the 'pen, while relying on RDLR and Workman to fill the 3-4 holes. Then Ranaudo, Wright and Webster play the 5-7 roles (any order), while Johnson, Barnes and Owens compete to be ready by mid-season. Scary part is, only Buchholz and Lackey are "proven" in that rotation, and you don't really want to rely on Buch. I think it's his injury history, and Doubront's ineffectiveness more than the "need" for an "ace" that puts pressure to bring back Lester. I also think it's silly to overpay for him based on some other guys' issues. Has another team ever won with such a young rotation core? Oakland has tried it several times. Baltimore and Toronto tried and failed. But if you can really establish RDLR and Workman this year, then you aren't as worried... which is why I think tomorrow's roster decisions are so crucial to the future of this club.

I ask this because I really don't know, but for a pitcher would time in the majors really be that much more valuable than in AAA, for someone like Workman and DLR who have already played in Majors in a couple different roles?
The way I see it, a lot of the results of a pitcher are not directly dependent on his actions. That sentence is probably terribly worded, so let me try to explain. For a pitcher to improve, he wants to strike out more guys, allow less walks, home runs, and hits, and he wants to generate weak contact. For him to do that he is going to try to increase velocity (young pitchers), change velocity, create deception in his delivery/pitches, increase pitch count capacity, and most of all improve his command of his pitches. Now I don't see why when working on the actions in that last sentence it would matter if he was facing MLB hitters, AAA hitters, or just a smuck like me. The coaches, catcher, and pitcher himself should have a pretty good idea if the pitches are being well executed or not.
Now I'm not completely ignorant of what MLB experience would bring. Learning the routine, hitters, being in the spotlight and so on. But to me the more important part is for Workman and RDL to be completing the repetition of pitching instead of where they are doing it. For example, would you rather have them working out of the MLB bullpen for experience or in the AAA rotation. It is also a little different of a case for Workman and RDL as they have had success at the MLB level, so the culture shock of an MLB call up may not be as drastic as it would for someone like Webster, who has been bad in the majors, or Barnes who have never played there.
And to be completely transparent, at this point of the season I do not want RDL or Workman to be removed from the MLB rotation. I'd much rather see Lester, Lackey, Peavy traded.
