The Pirates would be a great option. SoxScout posted on his twitter that on MLB Radio they were talking about a package with Glasnow and Bell for Lester. They are also looking for a left handed reliever. Lester and Breslow for Glasnow, Bell, and Trey Supak. Seems like a deal that would benefit both teams Too sox friendly IMO, You have to send them Lester, Miller + to get Glasnow and Ball but I'd give them all the pieces they want for those two.

Jeff Passan ? @jeffpassan Sources: Pirates emerging as Lester darkhorse. Deal could possibly center around Josh Bell. News with @tbrownyahoo: yhoo.it/1nZxxajTo me this is the team and organization that needs to finally try and go all in. If I were a Pirates fan, I'd be livid if they don't go after a potential game-changer like Lester. Some folks on here mention that some of us would rather have the number one farm team and not worry about the real action. I hear you, and at times that is me, but the Pirates who haven't won since the Civil War are much worse to me. They need a #1 or #2 more than anyone. They have some real talent in Pittsburgh and could definitely over take a Brewers or Cards team, but they are worried about making a future mistake. Their farm system is the one I would like to choose from, if I was the Sox. Josh Bell, who I have watched in Bradenton, has tons of potential, but the darn Pirates already have an outfield that most organizations drool over with Marte, Andrew M., and Polanco. The depth in their top 20 is startling. They are the best trade partner for me, but are they going to "play it safe" once again?

Gordon Edes ?@gordonedes 2m Any trade with Pittsburgh does not necessarily revolve around OF prospect Josh Bell

I honestly wouldn't want that package from Pittsburgh... It is obviously a great value, but those players won't sniff the 2015 roster. Sounds like it would beat any other offer on the table though.

Take the best value and worry about the 2015 roster in the offseason ... there are other trades to be made, free agents to sign, etc.

You'd be likely to get one of the top four healthy prospects (Glasnow, Bell, Meadows, Kingham) and maybe you can also get Alen Hanson, a B prospect with whom PIT is a bit exasperated, or one of their B-/C+ outfielders - JaCoby Jones or Willy Garcia. BTW, Trey Supak was just drafted, so he cannot be traded.

Nope, PTBNL needs to be named within six months and 2014 draftees are not eligible to be traded until after the 2015 draft.

Kingham and Bell seems like it could be in the realm of possibility to me because although Kingham is a good spec, his ceiling isn't that high. Whereas Glasnow could be one of baseball's best pitchers if he can somehow greatly improve his command. In this way it's less risky of a move for Pittsburgh.

Why do you need multiple reports?
This really isn't rocket science. If the Red Sox were willing to pay Lester what he wanted he would have signed.
I think you have a rather high opinion of professional athletes. No one cares what the original offer is, they care what the last offer is. Lester had a number that he wanted and still does. The Red Sox so far have been unwilling to meet that offer.
Lester is looking to make as much money as he can and the Red Sox are looking to pay him as little as they can. So far there is obviously a gap between what Lester is willing to sign for and what the Red Sox are willing to pay. I don't see why you think that this gap is suddenly going to close or that keeping him will somehow change either parties position.

His control must really be a mess if he has three plus pitches and that's where he ranks. Honest question: What are your expectations for acquiring a pitcher who is a minor leaguer? Because someone with both plus stuff, and plus control just doesn't spend very long in the minor leagues. The very few drafted as finished products speed through. You seem to write off any pitcher who isn't already a finished product, so I just want to get an idea of what exactly you look for in a pitching prospect.

Much like the Peavy trade and most trades made around the deadline the prospect package that gets returned for Lester is going to be better than speculated on here or other internet spaces.

The closest I can think of is Cliff Lee being traded in the winter before his free agency year and then resigning with the team that traded him.
Not that you are necessarily making this argument, but I have heard the argument that because players who are traded never resign with their original teams trading the player decreases the chances of resigning. Clearly there is a huge logical hole in that argument.
I would suspect there isn't. For all of the rhetoric we hear from professional athletes they tend to act in a very rational way. Baseball players, especially big name players who reach the market, are under a lot of pressure from the union and their families to make as much money as they possibly can during their careers. Considering how much revenue they generate, the relative brevity of their careers, and their limited options outside of baseball when their careers are over they have every right to do that.

If I am trading with Balt or Tor, who are desperate for a playoff, I would ask for Bundy, Harvey, Stroman. If it's the Dodgers I want Urias if it's a pitcher (but I would prefer one of their top position players. For pitchers I want a strike thrower with #2 upside in a trade like that otherwise I'm going after a high upside, high OBP position player or a power bat with decent (.320 or better) OBP. Using the Garza trade as a comp, with Lester being > than Garza. Bottom line, I want at least one top prospect who fills a position of need and will be ready sometime in 2015. The guys with 45 or less control - especially in AA or higher - are lottery tickets. ADDED: If Cherrington would actually deal with NYY - which he may since Lester is a rental - I would demand Betances, Gardner. and Severino (and even flip them Gomes to cover their loss of Gardner but then I'd need Judge. too). If they said no I'd say. "Fine, now we're both in the race…for a top 10 pick. See you at the bottom, Bri."

I'd have no problem eating the remainder of Lester's 14 salary for a lower revenue team to increase the prospect return. He may be a rental but a frontline starter who is an absolute free rental is pretty valuable to those small budget contending teams. Specifically Pittsburgh and KC fit this idea although we have mentioned Lackey perhaps is a better fit to these teams particularly if both parties are open to a short term extension.

Gordon Edes ?@gordonedes 2m Any trade with Pittsburgh does not necessarily revolve around OF prospect Josh Bell Oh my lord. Passan says " could possibly" center around Bell and Edes' retort to that is it would " not necessarily revolve around Bell." YOU ARE LITERALLY REPHRASING THE EXACT SAME REPORT THAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SHOOT DOWN.

Pete Abraham @peteabe · 35m This seems telling: Farrell says #RedSox have Brandon Workman lined up to start Wed. if Lester is traded.
I have a hard time believing Farrell would make a statement like this unless he knew Lester is a goner. I'd say there's less than a 5% chance Lester is on the roster at 4:01 Thursday.

I'd say there's less than a 1% chance. They've probably already gotten at least one offer that surpasses the value of the comp pick.

Gee, if the Sox are going to dangle Breslow, why not also include Bob Zupcic and Kevin Romine? That'll get things heated up.

Those are proven services, we might add. He's got the rings to back it up. It may be an unlikely scenario, but Lester being sent to a contender where he make his bones again, garnering the Sox some real value, and then being brought back on a market contract is certainly an appealing one. Wishcasting, but it's interesting to contemplate.

Damn this is exciting!!
I almost think at this point that trading Lester could HELP the Sox re-sign him, for several reasons. It shows to him (and us) that they'll talk to him and feel him out on things, therefore increasing the trust and bond between the two, while still giving the kid something to play for this year. Also, it would increase our chances in 2015, which could only entice him (not to mention Lackey) to come back.

I'd say there's less than a 1% chance. They've probably already gotten at least one offer that surpasses the value of the comp pick. Here's a quick thought. MIL and STL both have Round A competitive balance picks. Throw it in the deal. Then, BOS is assured of getting at least the value of the comp pick it would lose by trading Lester. STL - Piscotty and the comp. pick MIL - Nelson and the comp. pick The comp pick could make up for the difference between a Piscotty/Nelson and a Josh Bell.
