Might not be a bad time to give Brentz some time at first.

Pretty vague description from Speier. Travis "heard" a pop in his leg or his knee?

Doesn't really matter much. Usually the only thing's that pop are the ACL/MCL/PCL in the knee or the Achilles in the heal.
Both would be season enders if true.

He's awfully young for an Achilles rupture, and that's a no-question diagnosis, no imaging needed. Sounds like something in his knee.

Allen Craig is our AAA 1st base depth now.

Allen Craig is our AAA 1st base depth now. And he's been hurt. Other options include Chris Marrero, Chris Dominguez, Witte, and Freiman. I think I'd go with Marrero if we needed a guy, but yeah, that's not good. Rob Bradford @bradfo 1h1 hour ago Per source, it appears as though Sam Travis' left leg injury involves his ACL. @alexspeier first to report there was considerable concern.

I feel for Travis. He is a good kid, I hate that this happened to him,
I still think he is a future major league first baseman.

Tim Britton @timbritton Torn ACL for Travis.
Well, we can officially say goodbye to him for this year. Sounds like he'll be ready for the start of 2017, though.

I never counted on him for much this year, but the bad part is that this takes him out of the possible mix for 2017. With a strong season in AAA and a successful cup of coffee in the major leagues, you could include him in your plans for 2017 in some way. But now, he's basically in the same position next year as this one. Well, he's young, not a killer for him, but too bad for the team.

And I'm ducking as I say this, but I think it's true: the guy whose projected 2017 PT just went up the most is Pablo Sandoval.

That sucks a lot. Was having a good year. Effects his shot at Boston next year and kills his trade value all at the same time.

As it was though, he was 4th in line for 1B depth. Hanley-Shaw-Holt-Travis. Holt should be ready within a week or so. It just stinks for the kid. I had an ACL a few years back, It would surprise me if he's not ready for spring training. This is a very finite injury, not like a chronic back issue or something. Plus he plays the one position where mobility is at the minimum.

Anyone elaborate how the injury ocurred? Running the bases, as described in the news story on this site.

He tagged out the runner, limped a few steps and went down at 2B. Painful. He exhibited drive and determination at ST, tools he can use to fully recover.

He was definitely going to be needed at some point. With the positional flexibility of the big league club, there are ways to fill in at first. Shaw could play first with Holt playing third for example. First is accordingly the position that I'm least worried about in terms of depth.

The problem is that the first base depth chart is almost the same as the third base depth chart. Shaw needs some days off and can't get them. Hanley is going to need more days off than he has gotten. Holt is fine for a fill-in, but one DL-trip for either Shaw or Hanley would have gotten Travis called up IMO.

Except Holt is out with the second concussion of his career. Which could mean just the seven days, but also could linger for who knows how long, or could reoccur at any point after a dive or something else seemingly benign. Plus, he is already the starting LF, so I dunno how he's gonna fill in at both spots.

Hernandez and Rutledge can also fill in at third when guys need a day off. Like the outfield, the positional versatility in the infield creates enough redundancy that they're probably ok for now. Considering that Deven Marrero probably isn't even the next Marrero on the depth chart at this point, that's a good thing too.
And gerry, good looking out. In my head I'd somehow changed it to his being a baserunner.

I can't believe I just thought this but is Panda truly out for the season or could he be back by August?
Ok, admonish me but I was just thinking of all available internal alternatives. His return would allow Shaw to play more 1st when Hanley needs a break. And I have a hunch he'll come back svelte and spry ("svelte and spry" = under 250 lbs).
