Sox owners to meet with Lester’s agents soon, perhaps by end of week, strongest sign yet of club’s interest in keeping him

If that speculatory 6 years $132 million offer is correct, then at least the Sox are headed in the right direction.
If Lester said he'd leave as much as $20 million on the table to sign with Boston, you'd have to figure another team would have to go 7 years or at least $26 million/year over six years.
I would think if the Sox offered 6 years $140 million, barring a 7 year $170 - $175 million offer, Lester would come back (fingers crossed).

“@jmastrodonato: Seems like a good time to remind y'all of Jon Lester's comments to @jtomase after he was traded: t.co/BCYnHWtqKU” A man's attitude can change pretty quickly when you push an additional $50 million in front of him.

It's all BS anyway, 90% of the time. It's good intentions but for $5 mil more of course almost every one of them will bail.

An extra 50 million of security for his family for another generation. I am not sure what we do if we don't sign Lester. I don't want to trade half our farm system and sign Shields for 4 years.
Signing Lester will fill more seats than any FA out there.

Signing Lester will fill more seats than any FA out there. Really it seems like a no brainer. He doesn't cost draft picks or the farm system. We know him better than any other pitcher. He is still young, LH and strong like bull. His command has improved over the past few years. The best could be yet to come. It would make a trade gamble look pretty damned good. I don't think Cespedes goes anywhere especially at his cost to us. I believe that Panda is almost ready to be 'sized' for his uniform. That would give the Sox another hitter in that woebegone lineup and primarily a lefty at that. I believe that the story has been written on this one.

Don't forget if the Sox sign Lester, the rotation is still theoretically worse than last seasons because they are down Lackey. They need two top guys.

Why is not Brandon McCarthy prominently in the discussion? I don't believe that he would cost a pick either.

Lester has received an offer from the Red Sox, according to Gordon Edes, ESPN Boston.

Because he's going to get overpaid for pitching well in NY after essentially being crap for a while beforehand. And the last thing this team needs is a questionable middle To backend starter. It wouldn't surprise many if they signed him then he stunk. At least it shouldn't.

Getting Lester signed - along with Sandoval - should increase the chances of the Sox being back in contention next year as well as improve the chances of getting another premium pitcher.

I'm not sure who this guy is, but he tweeted that the Sox offered 6 years to Lester. I don't think they would have even made an offer if it wasn't competitive.
Marino Pepén ?@marino_Pepen
CALIENTE: #RedSox le hacen tentativa oferta por 6 años a Jon Lester, se espera que el lanzador evalúe el mercado antes de tomar decisión.
Edit -
And he said that it was $130-140 million.
This is who broke the Castillo signing.
This is where we have to trust Lester when he said he'd take less to stay in Boston. That's a pretty damn good offer if true.

wouldn't that have been confirmed by another reporter by now? Not necessarily. We're probably lucky to even hear a single report of what the offer was. One of the sides would have wanted it leaked.

Josh Johnson 31 in January, was the prime high-risk, high-reward starting pitcher from last offseason. He had Tommy John surgery in late April, however, so 2015 will be an abbreviated campaign at best. Johnson’s front-rotation abilities are getting further in the rearview mirror, but his potential if healthy remains interesting. Could he be a candidate to sign to a contract with a clause for a call up date built in?

Is he really a guy you want to spend a good chunk of change on (say $5m+), give a roster spot to and have take turns from the young guys? I wouldn't. When was the last time he was actually good? teams that don't have young prospect depth need guys like him. See NYY.

Lester's agent, Seth Levinson, said the Sox showed "greet respect" for Lester. Would not comment further on negotiations
