Really looking like Lester will be coming back to Boston, or that someone will grossly overpay. As much as the Cubs could use him, I don't think Theo overpays for Lester. I could see him trying to get a Ross/Cueto/Latos/Iwakuma type and try to extend them though. The Cubs have young hitting to deal, hard to see them not making some smart move to land a good arm.

Quote while it is known the Red Sox ownership group extended an offer to Jon Lester during their meeting earlier this week, and that Lester also met with the Cubs Tuesday while planning on getting together with Atlanta Thursday, little is known about the particulars of the Sox negotiations with the lefty. One of Lester’s agents, Seth Levinson, did reply in an email when asked about the landscape, writing, “I will not comment on negotiations nor will I characterize a meeting other than to say that the Red Sox extended great respect to Jon.” fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2014/11/19/agent-red-sox-extended-great-respect-to-jon-lester/

I would really like the Sox to sign Lester, as most people here feel. If they do, the next best step in my opinion would be to go after Ross. The Sox have the prospects to get it done, and I think the opportunity would be there to extend him at pennies on the dollar compared to what someone of his value would get as a free agent. He is very good, but pitched in virtual anonymity in San Diego. He and Lester would give the Sox a great 1-2 combo for a number of years.

According to a mAjor league source the Red Sox offer to Jon Lester falls into $110-$120 range over six years.

I'm with grandsalami here. 6/140 is $3.33 million more per season than 6/120. Chump change in the grand scheme of things.

You think they give him a lowball starting offer after that 4/70 with the true intention of signing him? Remember that time when people were debating if the sox should pick up his option? And by all reports the sox have made known they fudged up. Why are so many people saying lester wants to go back to the sox if they were not serious

If he's willing to settle for anything under 140, I'd bet he signs in Boston. If he "needs" anything above and beyond, he's gone.
And yea, 120 to 140 is chump change, but not if their initial valuation is say 100, at which point bumping up to 120 would be the chump change.
I still think it gets done in Boston

I'm just saying, I wouldn't be shocked if someone out there is willing to give him the 120 at only 5 years.

I've been saying this for a year, but this is where you have to trust Lester when he said he wants to be in Boston and that money isn't everything. The only question I've had is whether the Red Sox wanted him and this offer says to me that they do. They will get it done because they both want to get it done.

“@peteabe: Keep in mind that rarely is an offer of the “take it or leave it” variety. Usually room from negotiation. #RedSox started at $70M, after all”

Bad form. The $70M offer was well-below market value and likely insulting. This was the chance to convey the respect he was due, not keep dancing the "negotiation" dance. Reminds of the negotiations with Roger and how fantastically that negotiation turned out for the Sox front office.

Looking over the FA pitchers for 2015 and 2016, I see no reason to trade for a pitcher. This year we need to sign Lester or Shields. I really like McCarthy like most posters on here. Another really good option in my opinion is Gavin Floyd. A 1 year contract to get his value up might work. Here is a link to his career stats. www.rotoworld.com/stats/mlb/3836/gavin-floydHe'd be a solid number four starter and in 2016 when we have more cap room we can sign another top of the rotation pitcher.

Has Brian Johnson been mentioned at all? I feel like this guy has gone under the radar a bit. Has had good numbers in the minors and was a 1st round pick. I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow wins the 5th spot.

That would be a leap. He has yet to play in AAA and would have to leapfrog the likes of Rodriguez, Barnes and Owens.
