Rusney Castillo (source: will sign for $72.5mm thru 2020)

I get nervous about signing guys with no track record. I feel pretty confident Betts will be an exciting MLB player... I don't know anything about this kid.
And I don't think getting added to the 40 man roster affects team control for 6 years, just means they start that clock within 3 years because of the options, right? Had Harper signed a major league deal, and added to the 40 man, then optioned, he would still have up to 9 years of control, or no?

Apparently he will decide soon, probably next week. From what is said about his ambitions, you wonder if Detroit may have an advantage here, as they will probably be in the playoffs, and would apparently put him in center.

According to Carfardo today, Sox may have made an offer on Castillo already. Excerpt: So, it stands to reason they are one of the teams trying to land Cuban infielder/outfielder Rusney Castillo, who is short but “extremely strong,” according to a rival American League scout, who thinks the 27-year-old has the potential to be a No. 2 or 5 hitter and could make a huge impact on a team like the Red Sox at third base or in center field. The Red Sox are believed to be one of a few teams who already have made an offer on Castillo, hoping it doesn’t fall short like their offer to Jose Abreu, who went to the White Sox and is having a fabulous year that should lead to being named AL rookie of the year.
“We are involved but just one of several teams,” general manager Ben Cherington confirmed. Also this nugget: Castillo may be a strong arm away from having five tools, but it isn’t that big a concern for most scouts, who believe his arm is adequate enough to play center field given his other attributes, which include speed and power.
“He’s a legitimate leadoff hitter/center fielder,” said Giants GM Brian Sabean, who is also in on the bidding.Full piece here www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/08/16/sunball/Ou0wql2ruwCcDcy7IqySEK/story.html

I'm actually hoping we land him now if it's for the right price. Even if he's worse in the infield, a versatile fielding 27 year old with upside is good enough for me. We don't need him to be Puig or Abreu to improve our team. His K numbers aren't nearly as bad as I thought, although the pitching in Cuba isn't great.

I heard the rumors yesterday were talking 6/50 could be the plausible top deal. The Sox have money and this coming year they need to show they are serious to the fans so maybe they (per their tradition) go shorter and higher. Wouldn't surprise me nor would I complain if they went 5/50 even to get him.

I'm happy with an outfield of Craig - LF, Cespedes - CF and Victorino - RF. Backed up by Nava and JBJ. I don't see that as a need any longer. We can alway play Mookie in CF too. I would love a big LH stick. Or, a star like Stanton. Castillo doesn't help the 2015 Sox IMO.

Our interest in Castillo has to involve either him or Betts at 3B, or else it doesn't make much sense ... unless they're also confident about pulling off a specific trade for a 3B involving Betts (or Bradley or Craig), which seems unlikely.
3B is the actual weak position. In CF, you have the possibility that Bradley can hit like he did in the minors and for the first month after the ASB, and Betts as an alternative. At 3B, all we have is a Holt / Middlebrooks platoon.
If either Betts or Castillo could take over at 3B, then you have the other and Cespedes playing every day in the CF, with Victorino, Craig, and Bradley sharing the other position. That's a really good lineup, although insanely right-handed.

I thought I saw articles that Cespedes refused to play CF for the As when Crisp was injured which may have played a part in them trading him.

He should start if he's healthy but it's tough to count on him to be more than just a 60-80 game guy (if that) until he proves he is healthy and can stay that way.

That's why I also mentioned JBJ and Nava. A defensive whiz and a decent LH bat cover that possibility. Why tie up 5/50 for a guy who may not start for you?

One of them would probably play 3B, but more likely two of Craig, Cespedes, JBJ, Betts, Victorino would be traded over the offseason.

JBJ could also get his swing back in AAA but I agree I think in this scenario Vic would get traded. I agree this signing would make the lineup a little RH but if Nava and Holt could get a lot of ABs vs RHP that would help a lot. Also if we could get a LHH C to pair with Vazquez. Regardless I'd go all in on Castillo if the price is around 60 or so.

It would be pretty embarrassing to let yet another Cuban get away. Anything you give these guys is going to be a good deal compared to what they would get in the FA market one season after they breakout in the majors. There's really no excuse.

Unless you get stuck with the lemon player. Sure, but it's not like that never happens with players acquired in free agency or through trade. And really, when was the last time a Cuban player signed for big money and wasn't worth the contract?

I do not find the range reported by Gammons to be particularly helpful. However, the points regarding human trafficking and calcium are very insightful.

And really, when was the last time a Cuban player signed for big money and wasn't worth the contract? Your last point is exactly my point. At some point a team will pay big money for a Cuban player and it will bite them in the ass. I find It highly unlikely that players from Cuba have a 100% success rate. Same with other international players. See dice-k and his hype from scouts before he signed.

So... the Red Sox should be wary of signing Cuban players because their track record is too good?

Gammons: "Rusney Castillo...will soon sign, for somewhere from $40M to $70M." t.co/dWvINCNMXyVia Red Sox stats With due respect to Gammons, the $30 - $70 m figure doesn't tell me anything. Most observers would draw the same conclusion. It's the number of years that makes this data inciteful.

And really, when was the last time a Cuban player signed for big money and wasn't worth the contract? Both infielders the Dodgers signed have yet to contribute much at the major league level (Guerrero and Arruebarrena). It's kind of silly to just assume that every Cuban will be as good as the last Cuban. The NBA went through a period like with with Euro players, and it illustrated a painful lesson-- the foreign talent pool is usually shallow, and once the top few names get signed, the guys behind them are just as hyped but less talented. Each player should be evaluated on his own merits, but because so little public scouting info is available on these guys, it's hard to figure out how much these guys are worth. Still, the default attitude should not be to think that they'll necessarily be a bargain.

I am the first person to criticize Gammons, but it's not like he tweeted that out as a "scoop", it was one sentence in a larger post on the Castillo situation that Sibby extracted (maybe because it was news to him). Gammons didn't even cite a source which shows that he knows it's common knowledge.

I want to see both Jay Bruce and Jason Heyward are going to be in the Sox uniform next year? Is that really a fantasy? How can Ben make it come true this winter?

Still, the default attitude should not be to think that they'll necessarily be a bargain. I do not agree. It is true that each player is special and each has a different value in the above market if it is international, but talent is no less after ranging signing the former, an example of this is the signing of Jose Abreu after players like Yohenis Cespedes, Jose Iglesias, Jorge Soler and Yasiel Puig Not to mention that I understand and Chapman are level Abreu ... Remember, we're talking Cubans, Cuba is practically limited in every sense of the word because of its political system, this are few publications and statistics of these players country. All we play will be scouts, but any player who is signed (HS player, college players, international) is a risk, firms for what he did in the past or the tools he has, not what he will do in the future the future is unpredictable, there is a duty that many players are "future stars". I am in favor of a firm Rusney Castillo, not everyone will be Matsuzaka, Boston must be played the lottery, and we lost Abreu, Darvish and others ...
