2015 Draft Discussion
|
Post by Chris Hatfield on Feb 11, 2015 10:11:54 GMT -5
Kinda amusing that the Red Sox have more money this year than last year with the comp picks and lost picks. I wonder if they'll go under slot at 7 and try to spread it around or just spend most of it right there. Remember, after 7, they don't pick again until 81. Best available is an even more obvious strategy there than it usually is.

I don't understand why they can't continue to hold the draft in early June so as to staff the rookie leagues. Any drafted players who are on teams participating in the post season championships should be able to protect their amateur status until they actually sign a contract. They should not be permitted to negotiate terms of a contract until their season is finished.

More good lines from top prospects:
UVA LHP Nathan Kirby @ ECU: 7 IP 3 H 0 R 2 BB 5 K
Louisville RHP Kyle Funkhouser vs. Alabama St: 7 IP 1 H 0 R 1 BB 12 K
Per the twitterverse Kirby was 91-94 with a good change up.
Funkhouser was 91-95 with a good slider.

Skye Bolt, 5-tool switch-hitting UNC CF who could be both a first or second round pick and a strong contender in Minors Moniker Madness competition, goes 2-4 in his first game of jr year. Had a great frosh year followed by meh soph year last year.

Another top pitcher had a nice debut: Cody Ponce, RHP, Cal Poly-Pamona 4 1/3, 2H, 0 BB, 6 SO after 66 pitches as he was on a pitch cout (his first start). Per the twitterverse he was up to 95.

Matuella goes 6 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 SO in his season debut.
Him and Brendan Rogers (Not the Livepool manager BTW) are the presumed early favorite 1-1 candidates.

Too early in the season but the 1 inning velocity drop is at least worth keeping an eye on.

On a side note on Funkhouser. He had a nervous 1st inn giving up single and walk , then retired last 20 he faced.

Had a great frosh year followed by meh soph year last year. Loved this kid when he was a freshman. And what a great name for a baseball player. You are right that his soph year was poor. Not sure if he can pull himself in to the top 10, but hope he has a great junior year. As Chris says earlier, the Sox need to take the best player/talent at #7. It could even be at a position where we have lots of depth. Just another reason to go all out for Moncada. When he is ready, there will be a spot.

@fpilierepg: Heard Dillon Tate didn't throw one fastball below 94 mph today. Consistently hit 97, 98, showed + off speed in front of upwards of 45 scouts
His line: 6IP, 3H, 2 BB, 8 SO

It will be intersting to see how the new baseball effects some of the college guys stats. They changed the seams up and are saying the balls travel more.
Granted a lot will happen in three months put this draft looks pitching heavy up top where we pick.

Yeah definitely someone to keep an eye on because if he performs as a starter and the stuff remains he could be hearing his name very early in the draft. Hopefully the coaching staff sticks to him starting, to find out if he can hold it down.
Early on there is a lot of pitching. Let's see if that holds til' June.

Hmm, Skye Bolt follows 2-4 with 0-5, though with some walks and a SF, as UNC wins first three.

Aaron Fitt ?@aaronfitt 45m45 minutes ago I heard good reports on @ncstatebaseball's Andrew Knizner behind plate this wknd. If he can really catch, he could rocket up draft boards.

Sweet merciful crap. That he was pulled after 7 with 93 pitches makes my heart happy. Kid pitching the ninth who gave up the solo shot owes money to the kangaroo court.

Something to keep an eye on:
Kendall Rogers @kendallrogersd1 · 12h 12 hours ago Morning nugget: Highly doubtful that @vandybaseball RHP Walker Buehler pitches this weekend. Am told he's progressing well. #mlbdraft
Also, per Aaron Fitt, Dillon Tate will remain in the starting rotation (scheduled to pitch on Saturday).

More injury related concerns:
@johnmanuelba: Scouts in NC being informed that #Duke RHP Michael Matuella will not pitch this weekend due to forearm tightness #mlbdraft
