Looks like he's going to end up in Seattle
Yankee fans are already ripping him apart on Twitter, saying he doesn't have heart, the mindset to be in a big market, etc.

I'd love to see him end up in San Diego.

I respect this. Ohtani is choosing the city and team that fits him the best. New York would have given him the most money, most exposure, and one of the best situations going forward. But he’s going to do what’s best for him as a player and person.

How much did Seattle offer just wondering.

Wow. Genuinely surprised he won't be signing with the Yanks. And really, not too upset he won't be with the Sox either. I want to see a pitcher/DH work out, but don't want to be the team that gives it a shot. Very happy to watch him from a safe distance.

I will gladly accept not being able to nervously watch Ohtani blossom into a two-way superstar in a package deal with not being able to angrily watch him blossom into a two-way superstar.

Surprising. He's definitely a different kind of cat. NY would have been a good baseball situation for him, but apparently he wanted no part of east coast baseball or big media.
I would have loved to have seen him in the rotation but didn't quite see the fit for the Red Sox as a DH when his bat is a question mark and the Red Sox need a .900 OPS type guy for that spot (or 1b with Hanley DHing).
Hard to see him going where there is no DH, so I guess Seattle makes sense? Sounds like the Cubs are the one non-west coast team that isn't out of the running yet?
He'll be fun to watch anyways and because he's not a Yankee I'm free to root for him.

Good for him. I am not gonna sit here and say I knew what he would do, but I am glad he is being very selective and choosing his best fit.

Not a great day. Ohtani wont even grant the Sox a meeting and the Stanton/Sox trade talks are over. Neither coming here.

I never really felt like Ohtani was an option, so I don't feel like we lost here... also, I am perfectly ok with Stanton not coming to Boston. Let's get JD Martinez and Duda, plus Minor and call it a day!

Typical arrogant obnoxious New York headline. Earth to New York - perhaps you don't have the greatest city in the world? Imagine that.

That's ^ disgusting and typical. I think he's going to be a good P. What he'll do with the bat who knows. We all heard good things about Fukudome and while he was ok he certinly was nothing special. Good get for SM and I hope he's an impact player.

How refreshing amongst todays greedy players! Surely the Redsox will lose a chunk of the Killer B’s due to inability to satisfy their greed. Sorry for the rant, but great to see a Seattle win out! Loved it when they were probably fighting for their very existence some time ago in the playoffs against the Yanks and beat them. Now we can root for him not in NY.

I don't get the "he doesn't care about the money" angle. As I've said numerous times, $3M or so right now is a pittance to the extension he's presumably going to sign next year. The signing bonus was never going to have anything to do with it. The teams we're hearing that are finalists mostly (think Angels, Giants, Mariners) have the money to sign him to a lucrative extension. Now, if he signs with the Padres, that'll be different, but those first three teams were all in the top half of opening day payrolls (see www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/heres-every-mlb-teams-opening-day-payroll-for-2017/ ). Dude knows what he wants and he's going to get it. That's great. But it's not like he's going to be some Low A pauper or something for the length of the deal just so he doesn't have to play in NY.

The lack of east coast teams suggests a strong desire to be geographically closer to Japan. Making that long flight a few hours shorter doesn't sound like a huge deal, but if he's going to be going back and forth regularly, it adds up. It's not like LA or Chicago are meaningfully smaller cities than New York, so I don't buy the "doesn't want a big market" explanation.

People from the Northeast always get so confused when people prefer something other than the Northeast.
Seriously, "rich Japanese guy prefers to live and work on the west coast or Chicago to the cities of the east coast" is a pretty frequent decision.

Anyone who knows anything about great circle routes or about Seattle (Yankee fans who read the Post self-select themselves out of this group) will not be surprised if it is the Mariners who win the sweepstakes. If you've read about him or watched what he has to say and how he said it you know he's really just a shy kid. The family thing looms large and Seattle is the closest jumping off point to Japan. And the city itself? ... New Yorkers think they run the world even as they stare at screens on devices running OSs developed on the West Coast, while buying products mediated by the world's heavyweight online retailer headquartered in, you guessed it. We attended the annual Amazon picnic a few years back with friends, one of whom worked for the company at the time. It was held a few miles out of town - think Twin Peaks. There were 17 flags hoisted above the crowd, one for each of the then represented countries in the workforce. I'm sure there's more than that now. There was music and food, which like the people, came from everywhere. He should feel right at home if he does decide to come to the city. Who knows, he might even make them a better team.

Also makes traveling simpler for family. I also found this map interesting. So to sum up: Cities on this map with large Asian populations: San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago (and others) Cities with teams who are finalists for Otani: San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago If you eliminate the Acela corridor and Detroit (rebuild), that makes sense. Makes me wonder why Houston isn't on the list though. Doesn't want to look like a front-runner?
