I understand that our pitching lacks the big names right now,but how do people still attribute our struggles to them, and disregard the horrendous offense? They were shutout for the 14th time this season, the most by any Sox team in more than 20 years, it really didn't matter how good Joe Kelly was, or the defense, they weren't going to win this game putting up a goose egg in the run column.

I was hoping for a pinch hitter in vain. Is Holt still ill?
If Craig et al are worse than MDBKS and Ross, then give us Hassan, Roberts or Dejesus.

Looks like we found our leadoff hitter in 2015, ladies and gentlemen... Mookie Betts. As we have said numerous times, Middlebrooks looks lost at the plate. Alex Wilson should contribute next year, Layne continues to look solid. Lots of things to look forward to next year!

Pedroia has been traded to the Yankees for Drew and A-Rod. That solves our left side infield problems for next year. We got A-Rod, Drew, Betts, Napoli for next year. But will come up with the $$$ to sign Drew??

Sean McAdam ?@sean_McAdam 2 min. Pedroia out with inflammation in left hand. Farrell said he could miss some time & wouldn't rule out shutting him down the rest of the way.
Alex Speier ?@alexspeier 1 min. Asked if there could be surgery for Pedroia, Farrell said information still being gathered.

You have to wonder if Betts' position in 2015, or at least to start the season, might be at 2b. Perhaps Pedroia does wind up having surgery. This would at least explain his declining numbers this year.

Its hard to hit when you can't use your hand effectively. We all knew Dustin was dealing with some type of injury. I think its best we shut him down and get ready for next season. Thanks Dustin for playing through pain once again. Your a warrior!!!!

Ranaudo's showing why fly ball pitchers with lack of control are the worst.

I think we're going to see Barnes pitching tonight.

I've taken in more information about Ranaudo from the O's announcers in half an inning than Don & Jerry have taught this season.
Re. Ranaudo: He's got descent stuff, and the control isn't terrible (modest walk rates past 2 seasons), but the command simply isn't there. Again, descent stuff but he seems to just be throwing out there. I think he'll end up as a solid bullpen arm, or trade piece to a 2nd division team, but the #4/5 SP label is still attainable. His command can still show improvement and even when he misses up, he's able to induce pop-ups at a solid rate (10.3% which would rank him ~30th in MLB), though SSS I know. I assume that's at least in part a product of his height (if anyone has data on that relation, I'd be curious to see if there was a correlation between height and IFFB%). Regardless he has work to do, but backend, workhorse type starter isn't completely unreasonable.

Why can't a tall, big guy like him throw the ball on a downward path? With his height you would believe he would be dangerous if he could do this. Not much of a pitching dude, could someone explain. Thanks

I see Webster get shelled as often to more often than Ranaudo, but with Ranaudo it's much more bleak. I don't see this guy as more than a 5th starter on a second division team. As the post above me said, no downward plane and he pitches to contact which with him means lots of HRs in Boston, Baltimore, NY, and Toronto. Not sure he's anything better than a low leverage MRP in the bullpen either.

Ranaudo's stuff isn't good enough for him to be throwing fastballs up in the zone. He needs to figure that out or the results aren't going to change.

I always liked Ranaudo better than Barnes because I thought his FB was better than Barnes' curve. May not be the case anymore.
His go-to pitch behind in counts right now is a FB that starts inside to lefties, and then tails back into the RF bleachers.

This has been an issue with Ranaudo for a long time and one of the primary reason some of us were critical that his shiny minor league ERA wouldn't hold.

The problem is that the only thing Ranaudo does at an above-average level is generate popups, which is not a good way to make your living as a major league pitcher. He struggles with command (often missing high), and even his control comes and goes. He flashed true strikeout ability the first half of last year, but hasn't shown it any other time in his career. His fastball doesn't have the velo or movement to miss bats (at least not the version he's shown thus far in the majors, which, to be fair, might be a tic slow at the end of a long season), and his curveball has the sort of hump that allows advanced hitters to see it coming out of his hand and lay off it.
His stuff probably isn't getting any better, so to be any better than a back-end starter, he's got to improve his command significantly. He had a stretch this summer when he basically stopped walking anyone, so it's certainly possible that he gets there.
That said: happy 25th birthday, Anthony! He's by all accounts an extremely hard-working and likable guy, so I don't want to rag on him too much. I'm still hoping he figures it out.
