If the Sox do have that offer out there they need to put an expiration date on it and walk away if he lets it come and go... Got to move on. 5/95 is too much as is, no need to screw around and slow down the plan. Putting the pressure may be best way to get it accepted. Plus, then you can show others your expiration dates are real.
If never been a Headley fan, but this Panda stuff is making me interested. 3/48 for Headley... Way too much but at least it's only 3 years and I think it could get it done. If not at least you'd be making the Yankees tie up 18m a year or so on him.

Have a strong suspicion that a 6th year or vesting option is what it is heading for.

I really can't see why they would offer a sixth year. I wouldn't offer even 5/90, probably.

@redheadsoxfan @bostonglobe From what I hear Sandoval is now in the decision making process. Not aware of whether teams have raised offers

I read that the way the Yankees do it is if there interested in someone they tell them get your offers and call them last. Then they offer them more and give the player like 24 hrs standing offer.

Isn't that ripe for manipulation? Yankees tell that to a player and he gets offers for X amount and he tells MFY he is getting X+Y and then MFY will have to offer X+Y+Z to get him.

Sandoval camp declining comment on status of negotiations, perhaps a sign that all offers are in and decision is getting closer #RedSox

Not quite sure why if San Fran actually offered 5/$90 he would choose us even if we are offering 5/$95.

I would hope an option for a 6th year with say a 2 million buy out would put him to our camp, but we may have to up that $95 to $100.

I have a good feeling that he's going back to SF. I think if he was really intending on coming here it likely would've been done by now.

I wonder if Ortiz spoke to Sandoval about the higher endorsement opportunities in Boston. Sandoval may be able to come close to the $5 million that Ortiz made last year (top 3 in MLB)

Bowden was on the radio earlier saying the market for HanRam is pretty small and the only two teams on him is us and the Mariners. Mentioned if Sandaval goes back to SF we probably turn up the heat and if we sign him try to flip Cespedes to them.

Given the Panda's already significant presence in the bay area, the 3 rings with SF etc...i would think his marketing opportunities would be even bigger in SF. He's not a mega star like Mike Trout who would probably do well to move to NYC at some point to increase his reach more in the New York market in addition to what he has already achieved in LA. The Panda is largely a regional star still isn't he, in most people's minds.

The guys on SoSH are talking currently about a rumor of Hanley Ramirez coming back to Boston being agreed in terms of dollars and years in their 3b forum. The source (sorry I don't know how to embed) is Jake Wesley whom broke the Stanton extension about a day before the rest of the industry got on to it. Sorry if this should go in another thread - or if quoting another board is poor form, but I thought people might be interested. They are correctly skeptical (as am I) and none of the national guys are picking this up yet, so take with a huge grain of salt of course.
Personally, I don't like the idea of bringing Hanley back to play 3b (or SS, or LF). He is a RHB, a noted clubhouse problem and - most importantly - cannot stay on the field. When playing, his bat is unquestionable, but betting on the age 31-35 (at least) seasons of a guy who's at bat totals have been 338, 604, 304 and 449 and would be learning a new position is not something I'd want to spend huge dollars on.

Thanks for the assist there DJ!
Agree that the rumor just doesn't make sense. We need a 3b, and preferably a LH bat. The team also quite famously is staying away from long term commitments to players past 30. Cherington has mentioned that a good indicator of future health is being able to stay healthy in the past - yet they'd sign a 30yr old player that fits none of that mold. To me, it just doesn't fit. If this rumor is true, there would have to be a spate of other moves made.

I still don't buy that they truly want both Sandoval and Hanley, but that they're definitely big players on both, with assumption they take one.
Maybe I'm wrong, I just don't see the overall need for both. It would certainly mean they have some trade lined up with current outfielders for pitching though
