“@jeffpassan: Jon Lester, Cubs agree on six-year, $155M deal, sources tell Yahoo Sports. Red Sox are runners-up. Their final bid: six for $135M.”

Lester isn't worth 26 a year but the Red Sox screwed up big time by not handling Lester right in the first place. Gonna be a lot of angry fans.

“@jeffpassan: The San Francisco Giants were willing to go seven years, somewhere in the neighborhood of $168 million for Jon Lester. He took less money.”

The Red Sox, John Henry, Larry Lucchino, and Ben Cherington are going get destroyed tomorrow and for the time being. We have zero pitching they messed up big time.

That's fine with me. Offered what we thought he was worth. That contract is going to hurt for the second half.

You realize opening day isn't tomorrow, right? Plenty of time to make trades and/or sign pitchers. Oh, and the universe doesn't revolve around Jon Lester. There are plenty of other arms available (now and next year). As a fan, it makes me sick to my stomach that Lester won't be in a Red Sox uniform tomorrow. But then I realize this is a business, not an organization to fulfill my emotional ties to players.

Blessing in disguise fellas, no way Lester is worth 25M+/year (not now and definitely not in year 6). Enjoy the overpay Cubs. I do wish we could have just signed him in the off-season when we would have got a considerable discount but this was the right move.

I still think he will dominate in Chicago.

So much for Lester taking a hometown discount. Guy is a fraud. I realize the Red Sox initial offer was probably perceived as an insult but still if you go back and look at some of Lester's quotes they're laughable. Hope Chicago (a place where you have no affiliation other than Theo) is "the place that makes you and your family happy". No surprise it came down to the dollars. I don't hate him for that, we would probably all take the extra money put in a similar situation but don't lie about how you're so loyal and want to take a discount only to do the exact opposite. Fraud.

Or a trade for Hamels for 4 prospects one most likely being X, Betts, or Swihart. Can't say I am a fan of those options.

Now John Henry becomes the most hated person in Boston? Then those people are idiots. Who are idiots? Those who offered 4/70 to their ace and franchise star while giving generous contracts to Sandoval and Rusney Castillo are not idiots?

Apparently he would be willing to take a discount, but not below the $150 million mark. Also, just heard Rosenthal report on MLB Network that Lester didn't want to go to California unless he received an offer substantially greater than Chicago's offer because of state taxes. Apparently that belabored argument does have some meaning, and it indicates that Lester really did want some money here. He might not have even accepted a 6 yr. $135 million deal last winter.

Yeah he chose the place that offered more $$$ despite everything he said, shocker. Is the word "fraud" banned? Not sure what's wrong with it when it's perfectly applicable to this situation.

Ownership and the front office are going to get skewered over how they handled Lester. Now what? Shields and Masterson? Good grief. Man can't even get excited about a team like that, it's just disappointing how the front office handled all of this.

No people who would despise ownership group because of this. Home grown talent leaves every team. Haha. Your logic is really crude and completely wrong. You give up the opportunity to keep the top talent at reasonable price while giving generous contracts to B type players. Now you are saying people to criticize ownership are idiots?

Ownership and the front office are going to get skewered over how they handled Lester. Now what? Shields and Masterson? Good grief. Time to go after Scherzer. You have to think if we offer the 6yr/155m Lester just got we'll at least be in the ballpark and go from there. If we're going to pay 25M+/yr for a SP then I would rather it be for Scherzer (who has a lot less mileage and better stuff). He's easily the better pitcher between him and Lester.

How much would you have given lester if he was a FA after the 2012 season where he pitched like crap? He had a career year in his contract year. And those are not B players.
