Peavy on Buchholz: “Clay is one of my best friends and I hope to God he can stay healthy,” Peavy said. “I just want him to embrace the fact that it’s his staff now. He’s the man. And he needs to show that leadership and really take himself to another level because he can do it.
“There’s no more talented guy in the league with his stuff. His stuff is unbelievable. But if he’s healthy and if he embraces now that he’s the man, there’s no limit to what he can do. We’re talking about a guy whose stuff is as good as any pitcher in baseball. You can rattle off any name, and Clay can match it. But he has to have his head in the right place. He’s got to make it work, and if he does that staff will be terrific because there’s some ability there.” . . . 6. Former Red Sox roll call at Cubs camp: Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, Jason McLeod, Manny Ramirez, Kevin Youkilis, Buddy Bailey, Mike Cather, Gary Jones, Ryan Dempster, Darnell McDonald, Tommy Hottovy, Peter Chase, Felix Doubront, Daniel Bard, Drake Britton, David Ross, Anthony Rizzo, Jonathan Herrera, Eric Hinske. {sic Lester/Ross prev. mentioned]
Also some interesting stuff on Bum/Posey and Lester/Ross. CafardoADD: Now I also don't know if Olivo is in Cubs camp or not. I Googled it, don't see any references to that.

When did Cather join the Cubs? Missed that.
If anyone is able to fix Bard, it'd be him. Done it once before.

I noticed that too, he's my favorite Sox pitching coach (I was hoping he'd get the Boston job), wise move by Theo. ADD: And now that you mentioned it, whatever happened to Hawaiian baseball ?

I was very surprised myself of all of the names on that list. I thought he did a fantastic job for us. I've mentioned this before, one way we should use our financial might is to always hire and pay well the best coaches and the best scouts. There shouldn't be a place, including Wasilla, Alaska (I hear Bristol Plain has a mean breaking ball), were we don't have someone looking hard for talent. After the new CBA, which will probably include an International Draft in 2017, we need to use our dollars in many ways.

The Hawaiian reference was to where Cathers fixed Bard. Bard was pitching in a winter league in Hawaii, Cather was the pitching coach of his team. It was after that when Bard turned it around.
Cather was also the one that taught Clay his change (Portland) that at the time vaulted him into being one of the top prospects in baseball and put the finishing touches on Lester and Papelbon.
It's somewhat surprising that he ended up with Theo. If memory serves, he left after not getting the pitching coach job in Boston, that would have been under Theo's watch.

Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato 5m5 minutes ago John Farrell says Allen Craig "looks different than when we got him. The shock of the trade is in the rear view mirror." Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato 5m5 minutes ago Farrell said center field competition still wide open, will take all of camp to make decision. Castillo and Betts will split time in games. It's somewhat surprising that he ended up with Theo. If memory serves, he left after not getting the pitching coach job in Boston, that would have been under Theo's watch. That makes sense. But you don't want to lose people like him. LOL, he's also good at keeping it light, he's the one that masterminded the famous deaf pitcher prank on Jeff Francoeur. . . . Pete Abraham ?@peteabe This video gives a little taste of how @jackiebradleyjr has leveled his swing this spring. More compact, too: #RedSox

Re. the Mookie Betts permanent uni number question asked upthread, it looks like he wants to keep #50 when/if he makes the team. Per the Globe this morning, he was offered lower numbers over the winter but decided to keep 50.

Tim Britton ?@timbritton 2m2 minutes ago Buchholz will start Saturday for Red Sox, Porcello Sunday. Suggests that's the order to start the season in Philly.
Not a major surprise

Moved a bunch of the athleticism posts, once they got completely off the ST relevance, to OT. Feel free to continue discussion there.

@sean_McAdam: Presence of Charlie Kerfeld, top Phillies' evaluator, at Red Sox camp this morning, sure to re-ignite Hamels talk. #RedSoxTalk

You could throw Crawford in with Hamels and I still don't think I give up Betts for that.

Reading this thread and the other posts on various other threads has gotten me to this conclusion.... It's time to start playing baseball and forget all the speculation for a while. Can't wait to (hopefully) enjoy watching this team this year.

I always pondered this. At what point does a switch hitter with one clear favorable match up turn from a switch hitter to a platoon player? The theory behind switching hitting (I think) is to take away the advantage a same handed pitcher has (or to always have the advantage an opposite handed hitter has). Most switch hitters will prove to be clearly better from one side than the other, but I'm surprised how lopsided some of their splits are. Nava's career line of 126 wrc+ 813 OPS LHed, 60 wrc+ 585 OPS RHed line would not suggest he is gaining or taking away any benefit from standing on the other side of the plate against LH pitching, which is the kindest way I could describe his switch hitting ability. I never really considered Salty, Nava, or Victorino as true switch hitters, because their splits are so obvious that opposing managers could still use the bullpen to create clear unfavorable match ups. In Nava's case I always thought he should just bat LH. What really makes him a good hitter is his good batters eye and plate discipline. I'm not suggesting it would be easy, he's never seen breaking balls moving away from him, but I would bet it would be in general easier for an high OBP guy to convert than a high ISO guy.

I would think that natural lefties have a hard time perfecting their right handed swing - probably because they don't face lefties enough.

And because we're talking about lefthanded/righthanded stuff, a little known fact: Pablo Sandoval is a natural lefty and decided to throw righty as a 9 year old because he wanted to play shortstop.
