So the new HR Derby format is about a million times better than the old one. That said, it pretty much guarantees that the current Home Run Derby records will never be broken.

So the new HR Derby format is about a million times better than the old one. That said, it pretty much guarantees that the current Home Run Derby records will never be broken. I don't even know what those records are, nor do I care, so I'm not too worried about it. Letting guys take as many swings as they want within a time limit is such an obviously great idea in retrospect. In the old format, so many guys would hit like two home runs in their round and be done. Now everyone actually has time to find their grove. Pederson was struggling for like two minutes in his last round before hitting I think seven in a row. People watch the Home Run Derby to see home runs, and this format is going to allow for many more of them in total. I'm kinda surprised no one had mentioned this on the forum already, because it was so much damn fun. Did people actually see it or were they turned off by the Derby's history of being boring?

Watched off and on. Found it very entertaining. Part of that, certainly, was the drama with the hometown Frazier winning in the end, but certainly the format was a big part.
The most boring part of the Derby was always the guy watching five pitches go by before swinging. This directly fixed that. Brilliant.
Also, I specifically watched BECAUSE of the new format. If they hadn't changed it I wouldn't have watched.

Greinke has 43.2 innings of scoreless ball. Could beat Orel in 2 starts. Only the 3rd pitcher in baseball history with 6 games in a row of 1 run or less.

He's making himself some serious money with his upcoming opt out. He's been unbelievable this season and for me a front runner for NL CY Young even against tough competition from Scherzer and Kershaw. Add: There's part of me that says we need to get Greinke this off season because of what we're seeing now and then there's the part of me that still questions if he can pitch in Boston and come close to earning the huge AAV he will get as a 31+ year old.

The second he comes to Boston he will turn into a 300 million dollar pumpkin. No more free agent signings please.

Preston Guilmet was designated for assignment by the Dodgers today, and if he's placed on waivers (rather than traded) I say he's worth a claim. He's eaten up the minor leagues because his fastball is pretty weird. They talk about it here at DRaysBay, but his fastball has rise along with no arm-side run. He's given up a couple too many home runs which makes his MLB line look bad, but he's been incredibly dominant at Triple-A, and unlike Craig Breslow, he's the type who the team should take a chance on to see if there's something there and he can be a long-term contributor.

He seems good for a few plays like this every year. The awesome part is that he probably had to do it that way to get the out. Very creative.

Steve Melewski @masnsteve Jul 20 Jason Garcia has thrown 6 scoreless during his rehab stint with AA Bowie. Arm strength coming back, touched 97-98 mph last outing.

Will Middlebrooks optioned to AAA What a weird season he's having out there. First he's playing shortstop, next he's in Triple-A... they going to convert him to pitcher next? (He hit 90s in HS)

(He hit 90s in HS) Its the Padres new regime...I wouldn't put anything past them. It really has been a weird season for him though. Only a .237 BABIP. He had even sliced his K rate to the lowest it had been in the majors, at 22.2%, though his walk rate dipped a bit. I'll always remember when I first met Middlebrooks, when he was playing at Futures at Fenway for Lowell. I had a card of him from high school. I slid it across the top of the dugout to him and he seemed so excited to see the card. He asked if he could take it for one second and proceeded to show it to all his teenage/20 year old teammates with a huge smile on his face. Hope he finds success somewhere, even if not with the Padres. That run he put together in 2012 was fun to watch.

(He hit 90s in HS) They're the Padres, so they'll convert him to catcher. He'll only get converted to a pitcher if he gets traded to Texas. Honestly though, their usage of him hasn't been that weird. Once it became apparent that he just was going to be too much of an out machine to stick at third base offensively, it made sense to see if he could provide value as a passable shortstop. Once he couldn't, with a .241 OBP and unable to beat out Yangervis Solarte on the depth chart, Triple-A was really the only possible destination. Other than the waiver wire or NPB, I guess. It's his last option season, right?

I don't know, seems pretty clear to me he means in the future when he says it's something they need to "revisit."
