Scott Lauber @scottlauber Can confirm through industry source that #RedSox are closing in on 2-year deal with OF Jonny Gomes. @sean_McAdam was first to report
Scott Lauber @scottlauber Worth noting: #RedSox looking for more than one OF. Adding Gomes wouldn't preclude them from signing others. Also, Gomes' role unclear

Don't understand this one. This better be for a bench bat, otherwise I really don't get it.

Well, that's as opposite to Carl Crawford as the Sox can get in LF, a right handed bat who hits for mediocre average, has a good OBP with his ability to take pitches, has good power, can mash lefties, struggles against righties, and is awful defensively.
I guess he platoons with with either Kalish or Nava?

Seems like Gomes would be a platoon OF vs LHP as his career .284/.382/.512 line suggests. (vs just .223/.307/.425 against RHP). Maybe look to split time in LF with someone like Nava who is better against RHP.

Jerry Sands is certainly unhappy to hear this news.

He's a good RH platoon bat but can only play LF (or DH against tough lefties). He kills lefties (.284/.382/.512 career) and would form a decent combo with Nava or Kalish in LF. I'd guess this means that they're moving on from Ross. If it's for reasonable dollars (less than $5m AAV), it would be a solid enough pickup, assuming other trades/signings are coming (Napoli, RF, pitching).

Poor defensive UZR in both corners. Short contract, useful platoon bat.
Assuming this happens, I figure we'll get another OF as well. I don't see Kalish or Sweeney starting Opening Day.
In terms of the 40-man roster, Kalish/Sweeney/Sands/Gomez seem to be one too many.

These compliment moves of Gomes and Ross are the types of moves a team that is one th verge of winning a world series makes. Definitely makes me think there is a big shoe to drop soon, with a major move.

Jerry Sands is certainly unhappy to hear this news. With Loney gone, DeJesus gone, and now Sands rendered pretty useless, the Punto deal breaks down to A-Gon, Crawford, and Beckett for De La Rosa, Webster, and a humungous get out of jail free card.

Err... De Jesus may clear waivers and end up in AAA. Jerry Sands has an option remaining and looks like he may very well end up in AAA. It's far too premature to assume they're out of the organization, especially for Sands.

Sands has an option -- he could either still make the bench, or be ticketed for Pawtucket. Gomez could have the short straw here.

How is Sands useless? He plays both right and left as well as first. I see Gomes more as insurance in case sands doesn't pan out. Sent from my SGH-T999 using proboards

I am very pleased, in so much as this move means the Red Sox will not be grossly overpaying for Cody Ross.

Or Nava? But that would make two OFs who probably shouldn't be playing RF if needed. Kalish adds flexibility but maybe Sweeny coulld be the 5th OF and mainly backupnCF and RF.

Solid bench signing or sign of descent into mediocrity? Time will tell.

That's a surprise. He has always had decent power and I do like his OBP. I would love to see a healthy Kalish, at least, platoon with him.
Agree with the posts about not over-paying for Cody Ross.

Last year Cody Ross was signed to be the RH platoon OF with LH Ryan Sweeney. This year it looks to be Gomes as the RH platoon.
I thinks this move bodes well for a Josh Hamilton signing.

I have to agree, I think they need another RH OF with power to pair with Hamilton Jacoby and Kalish. No to mention the $$ they are saving on Ross has to be earmarked for something. (Along with the other 100+ million they have to spend. )

I don't know why so many are already pencilling in Ryan Kalish on the ML roster. He missed most of last year with a shoulder injury and did not perform well in his brief call-up, most likely due to his shoulder not being fully healed.
I see Kalish starting the season in Pawtucket until he shows he ready for a call-up. Gomes will most likely pair with Nava in left with Sands pairing with Sweeney in right or playing first when necessary. This is assuming, of course, that Cherington doesn't make a major trade for an outfielder.

This borders on stupid. Until his spurt this season he had been on a multi-year decline. There is little reason he won't resume the decline next year. This is not a move a team that wants to contend would make. This is just filling in a spot with a mediocrity.

I don't see a reason for getting too upset about this signing until seeing the amount they're paying him. Gomes is a useful platoon outfielder against LHP and should be a bargain relative to what Cody Ross will be getting.
