IMO the unexpected in baseball remains one of its greatest reasons to watch. Thank you Justin, Good job. Thanks, guys, for the three home runs against Archer, Thanks for not flipping your bat, Papi. Thanks for that fourth out JBJ. Thanks for being on that short bench, Merry, instead of Travis, and making that great play. Thanks that Nap, Brockholt and JBJ didn't pummel the ump for those bad called strikes when tbese guys are fighting to keep their jobs. Win or lose, ya gotta love this game.

I Did not get to watch the game today, does anybody have any information on masterson's fastball velocity? Was he still in the 80's?

His fazstball pretty consistently was in the high 80s to 90 and a couple of times 91 or 92 - much better than earlier in the season. But he also was mixing his pitches well, and had a wipe-out slider.

Is there any way to go back and see the game-day pitch locations? I'm particularly curious about the K for Napoli.

Is there any way to go back and see the game-day pitch locations? I'm particularly curious about the K for Napoli. Brooks Baseball is the ticket. This link is for yesterday's game, Chris Archer vs. Mike Napoli and the strikeout in the 2 nd inning. Add: While I understand Napoli's frustration - the strike zone has been growing as shown by a number of studies - this was a very good pitch. I think what fooled him is that the pitch - a slider - just clipped the lower outside corner of the strike zone on it's way out and down. Check out all the graphs to get an idea of how good Archer is. Changing speeds, changing location, same exact release point... it's all there. Good win yesterday, against a talented starter.

That's what I thought. I don't mind Napoli standing up for the strike-zone, but it looks like that pitch was called correctly. You don't get borderline calls Mike. The line is in, like tennis. Check your facts before ranting, and -- more importantly -- learn the new strike zone. It's here to stay.

The new strike zone is not the new strike zone until they make the plate wider. Until then, they are calling it wrong.
Napoli has just been screwed so many times that he boiled over on a pitch that didn't happen to be one to complain about.
Also, I wonder if Papi or Holt can ask the umpire to put their head a little further over towards the middle of the plate so they stop calling pitches 6 inches outside a strike.

I watch some other games. Not a lot. Are we using the top of the strike zone to our advantage? It certainly appears many umpires are giving pitchers that letters-high strike. If you're throwing hard, like a Joe Kelly or Matt Barnes it's a difficult pitch to hit. Not good to throw 88 up there. But, if you can run it up like those two. Would think it's gotta work. Many of the HR's those two allow seem right down the middle waist high. Like it's on a tee. Kelly may not have the command to throw up there, but Barnes has pretty good control.

He apparently got thrown out because he didn't pick up his bat, not because of anything he said. When he got tossed, that's when he went off, and understandably so. #umpshow

He'll probably get a game suspension for it too. Dumb.

Napoli has to be enormously frustrated and it probably is affecting his performance. He either has lost some of his strike-zone judgment or he just can't adjust to the changes. It might be a little of both.
However, he also has been taking pitches right down the middle over and over. It's like he can't pull the trigger.

But to then go complain about the pitch after the game when he should have already reviewed the video and foxbox of the call seems a little counter-intuitive. If you're going to rip the umps post-game, make sure you do it when you have a real beef. Otherwise, you can bet you're going to get more grief from them going forward.
