Kazmir traded to the Astros. Any chance he starts tonight?
www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25248455/first-big-trade-athletics-send-scott-kazmir-to-astros-for-prospects
"More to come on this deal, and the prospects the A's are receiving." for two minor leaguers: RHP Daniel Mengden and C Jacob Nottingham. Kazmir, 31, will make $13M this season and is a free agent at season's end.
A's are at home today, Kazmir would join HOUS tomorrow in KC. Friday: HOUS @ KC
no news on Marrero. no news on Sandy Leon waivers. Means Sox are probably looking to trade him before putting him on waivers. Maybe.

Looks like defense doesn't matter according to the Wall Street Journal: www.wsj.com/articles/defensive-stats-shift-back-toward-irrelevance-1437518138Two excerpts: The quality of a fielder doesn’t matter on most plays. Inside-Edge partner Kenny Kendrena says 24% of plays are almost always hits and 62% are almost always outs. The remaining plays where defenders can really distinguish themselves are so infrequent, he said, that the success in converting them can distort a fielder’s true skill.Given that position players have had 76,112 total chances this season. Baseball’s best defensive team, the Houston Astros, has saved only 25 hits all season because of the skill of its defenders, according to Inside-Edge...Dramatic infield shifts are now factored into the zone-based systems. But the evidence shows that teams save more hits this way than they do with conventional range. For example, the Rays have saved 15 runs with outstanding defensive plays, but nearly twice as many with their radical shifts, which they rely on more than any other team. The piece is more nuanced than that, and they don't have any reels of Hanley playing left-field, but there are some interesting observations. The article did not say defense doesn't matter. It said that Inside Edge isn't good, and I completely agree. For example, according to them, JBJ made no impossible plays (0%), 1 remote play (1-10%) and 2 unlikely plays (10-40%) last year. And that all other plays he made would have been made by an average outfielder. Does that sound reasonable? It's ridiculous. I remember a lot more than 3 good to great plays he made. And for the 62% that are almost always outs, the "almost" part of it is where you have to evaluate Hanley because they are not almost always outs for someone that bad. I bet for him, 40% of plays are almost always outs. I admit I am a big JBJ fan, but he had to have made half dozen remote plays from chasing the balls down to 300 foot throws on the money to double ppl up to diving effortlessly to get to a ball that was easily a triple for 90 percent of centerfielders Edit for spelling

Mookie should be in right, period.

I'm all for keeping Hanley, but just throwing this out there - Astros could really use an impact DH.

To be honest I was a big Appel fan in his draft year and thought he could be a likely 2/3 but haven't seen him pitch live since then. My gut says no ust based on some of his k and bb stats and innings totals. PCL is rough on a lot of stats, but from stats along he looks like something the Sox have a lot of already in AAA/AA starters: mediocrity.

Barely matters, but sending Hanigan there is inexcusably stupid.

At least for me I have cut JF and BC a lot of slack because of 2013. Back to back last place finishes will result in all benefit of the doubt disappearing. I am quickly losing confidence in the FO and manager. While this team had SP pitching questions entering the season not even the most pessimistic among us would have foreseen this team having the worst record in the AL... Shilling was crushed by the trade to the O's. His Father was dying of cancer and he desparately wanted his Dad to see him pitch at Fenway. Shillings Father died in 1988. Shilling was messed up for quite some time. The guy who turned him around was Roger Clemens. Shilling most probably would not have been screwed up for so long had he and Roger connected in Boston. BTW Boddicker SUCKED the big one in both the 88 and 90 playoffs. WAY overrated by Boston fans. Anderson was also "crushed" by the trade. Had not Cal Jr. not taken him under his wing he might have washed out completely.

Couple of hard-hit balls for Napoli tonight. It's probably too late for him to regain some trade value, but for his sake I hope he figures it out in the second half.

Bad outing by Miley, too many walks. Ogando has a serious home run problem, before this game his HR/FB rate was at 20%. Other than that he has been a serviceable reliever.

I'm barely watching this game but this review system is absurd. How long was that review? The pitcher's probably cold by now.
