Does Red Sox not winning the bid on Park make us think he's a bad player given their access to Nexen's info? Not necessarily. It probably comes down to some combination of:
1. they have Hanley 2. Park strikes out A LOT -- 160 times in 140 games. 3. Sox have enough money committed to question marks. 4. Shaw and Sam Travis give the Sox hope. 5. Maybe the bid 12 mill and simply missed. 6. It was just bad timing with not enough time to move Hanley. 6b. If they somehow manage to pull off the unthinkable and deal Hanley, they still like the idea of going out and grabbing Adam Lind from the Brewers better than the idea of Park. Lind hits righties, Shaw hits lefties. Perfect platoon.

Unless they were somehow to acquire a mid to top flight first baseman, given the alternatives, I'm fairly comfortable going into the season with Hanley at 1B. He has hit like a superstar in 6 of the last 9 years, an above average hitter in two, and then of course last year. The bat has to be looked at as an aberration and/or due to the shoulder injury.
Do I trust his 1B defense right now, no. But the IF defense aside from him should be very good, so hopefully even if he's sub-par, it's competent enough

The key is that learning 1b is fairly simple--almost like learning a dance on youtube. Especially for a guy who spent a decade fielding ground balls. Hanley's attitude and effort level are not ideal, but they should be enough for 1b. And actually, it probably took a lot of work last winter to add the bulk that was part of the problem in LF. I think the odds that he'll get injured are higher than the odds that he'll be bad at 1b.

I was just told that the Pirates won the bidding for Byung Ho Park.
So there you have it. Pirates can negotiate with him.

So it's down to the Cubs, Reds, White Sox, Twins and Brewers if all reports are correct. Those first four teams seem set at 1B/DH. It looks like the Brewers to me. Maybe the White Sox if they move on from LaRoche.

It would really be interesting to see the Reds win him and out Vitto on the block, which they may as well do.

Maybe the White Sox if they move on from LaRoche. Is Abreau defensively challenged, or are they looking for a DH? Change Abreau to DH while releasing LaRoche & his $12.5 mil? I guess they could trade LaRoche for pennies on the dollar. Doesn't seem like a fit there on paper.

Daniel Kim 대니얼 김 @danielkimw
Fyi - in preparing for possible #MLB relocation, Park Byung-ho has given up bat flips. He doesnt flip anymore. #Twins
Well, then. Glad we didn't win the bidding.

I still think Mauer could play third really well, but I've been beating that drum for nearly ten years now.
Is Park a good defensive first baseman? I'd assume that the Twins would keep Mauer at first and put Park at DH if it works out.

Not many teams have a bigger need for a 1B. Unless they are going re-sign Steve Pearce or they saw a hole in his game.

Scouts rave about Park's D at 1B, despite his size. "Plus defender, plus arm," one said.

Good to know, provided it's not the same scout who said that Austin Meadows will make Andrew McCutchen expendable.

Wow, surprised that the Twins were the winning team. Never would have guessed that one. I thought they were locked into Mauer at 1b. It could be a nice move by them. They are an emerging team. If Buxton breaks out and they get the production from Sano I think they're going to get, they could be a very dangerous team.

Dan Duquette must really have his hands tied not to grab this guy. When a MN (smaller market) can sign this guy & have position redundancy to boot.

Each of the last three seasons the Twins have spent quality money to ramp up their starting rotation and some money spliced elsewhere as well. I wouldn't say it's much of a surprise.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is the 16th-largest metro in the U.S., Baltimore is 19th. Out of spring training (I can't find a final number), the Twins had the 18th-highest 2015 payroll, Baltimore had the 17th.
