Reverse pitcher's duel. First to 10 wins.

Just in case you forgot how frustrating the first 100 games of the season were, Rick Porcello wants to give you a reminder

So will Dombrowski be trading the same player in consecutive off seasons?

Too many crappy outings by Porcello. The Sox should be cruising with a 6-0 lead. Instead Porcello gives most of it back with 24 outs still left to record. Guy can't stand prosperity.

Looks like a half full park. Sure most of the seats are sold, but sad.

Joe Castigleone said during the game tonight that JBJ is the best defensive outfielder he has ever seen play in person. He said JBJ is in the same class as Willie Mays.

I could get used to the way Porcello pitched the last 6 innings. Totally.

So: circa 93/94 yanks Betts=B.Williams Xander=Jeter Swihart=Posada
Erod=Pettitte
Of course Hanley=Tartabull

Give Porcello a break here. I'm sure he got cold and out of sorts sitting through a 1/2 hour top of the first and wasn't geared up as he should have been for the bottom half. Sometimes a team is disheartened by a big opponent start and a pitcher can get along easy, but the Yankees are chasing the playoffs, they know that with the Sox pen no lead is safe, and this is Sox/Yankees after all. So they jumped on a pitcher who had been sitting around. Happens. After Porcello got back into the rhythm of the game he was fine.

It's scary to think how good this offense could be next season. Sure, there is plenty of room to fail, especially when you are counting on a good portion of the offense coming from guys under 26, but boy, when was the last time the core was this talented?
Swihart's late tear virtually guarantees his spot on the opening 25 if it wasn't already. The question will be, if Vazquez seems healthy, do they just go with an internal option as a "backup"? Don't think Swihart will ever hit well enough to be at 1B, especially with Hanley/Panda signed for multiple years. A long ways away, but I wonder if he could play 3rd competently, longshot, but by all accounts he's a spectacular athlete who is still developing behind the plate. That being said, there's absolutely no argument for moving him off of C if Vazquez isn't in the fold. Even if CV is good to go, they both probably get starts at C, with Swihart maybe getting AB's at DH/1B/3B?

To me, 89, the biggest threat to next season's offense is that David Ortiz finally hits the wall of Father Time. It's going to happen sometime soon. Because of his history, they will keep him in there and keep him in there, probably for most of the season, no matter what he does, because of who he is and to give him every chance to regress to the mean. But to every player comes a time when they don't regress.
P.S. For those who want starters pulled after 3 times through the order, and don't want starters overtaxed, please note: Lovullo absolutely wants to minimize the number of outs he entrusts to this bullpen. He considers potential overexposure of a starter as less likely to cause the Sox to lose control of the game than using an extra reliever/relievers. It's as plain as the nose on your face.

When he gets too old, he gets too old. Even if he declines more next year, it looks as though the Sox may finally have the pieces around him to sustain some drop off in production.

Swihart with some nice swings tonight.
Porcello threw very well after a rough first inning.

I guess Porcello's outing is a microcosm of his season. A lot of ugliness followed by hopefulness. One good thing about him is that when he is on, he can eat up the innings.
