Just DFA Layne and get it over with. He is doing absolutely nothing for us so he has no value to us.

Any news about Varvaro's June 15th opt out?

Why aren't we talking more about Pat Light these days?
He's putting up the best numbers of his career at Pawtucket now (K/9 of 10.5, BB/9 of 4.8 (down from 7.1 last year)), and the splitter just looks better and better in his highlight videos.
Moreover, he's riding a hot streak, having surrendered no earned runs in his last 8 appearances.

He still needs to improve his control. I'd like to see him shave another walk/9 IP off his figures.

Per the ProJo, Varvaro has a June 15th opt-out in his contract. He's pitched really well in Pawtucket-- certainly well enough that you'd think he'd opt out and try to get a major league deal-- so it's a question of whether the Red Sox want to add him or risk losing him. If they decide to add Varvaro, there's not really an easy demotion candidate, especially since they're already working with an eight-man bullpen that probably needs to be trimmed once they need a fifth starter again this weekend. Assuming Elias gets called up as the fifth starter, they'd need two roster spots for Elias and Varvaro, and their options are: - Option Barnes
- Option Hembree
- DFA Layne
- DFA Buchholz
- Go with a three-man bench (option Hernandez or DFA Rutledge)
Of those options, I would probably DFA Layne (he's not getting used enough, and Varvaro is excellent versus lefties while still being useful versus righties) and go with a three-man bench (DFA Rutledge). The 40Man Roster is at 39 after moving Carson Smith to the 60 Day DL. Can Varvaro be added to the 40 Man Roster but not called up to the 25 Man Roster? Rutledge has 2 options remaining, doesn't he? Can't he still be sent down?

Varvaro is out of options, so if he's on the 40-man, he has to be in the majors. I thought Rutledge was out of options too, but his SP.com profile has him having one left, in which case you could option him rather than DFAing him.

A strange end to a strange little career. I'd love to know more, someday.

The curious case of Anthony Varvaro just got even more mysterious.

Everyone has an opt-out if that's how it works.

So, what should be the high-leverage pecking order now? Personally, and without any research, I'm loosing faith in Hembree, Barnes, and even Tazawa. Anyone with some analysis of what we have now and what we can expect or hope for over the second half?

I think the bullpen would look a lot better if they weren't pitching 4-5 innings per game. They're just starting to wear down.

If they put both Buchholz & Kelly in the Bullpen whose spot are they taking?
With 35 Division games on the schedule for August & September (16 of them at home & 19 on the road) I think there is still time to make a real solid run at the Division title. But, I think we need to get some Bullpen Arms that are capable of getting the "BIG BATS OF THE DIVISION" out ( Batista, Encarnacion, Donaldson, Machado, Jones, Longoria etc...). Are Buchholz & Kelly + Tazawa & Uehara the Pitchers they should be counting on? I hope Dombrowski makes a move to aquire Bullpen arms specifically for the "BIG BATS OF THE DIVISION"

I would assume Buchholz will be the long man, not a set-up guy. Not sure where Kelly fits in. They'll probably send down Hembree (again). If another move has to be made beyond that, I guess Layne will be DFA'd.

I won't claim this has gone unnoticed, but with everything else happening, it hasn't been talked about.
In his last 9 outings going back to June 21, Matt Barnes has a 11.2 9 2 2 1 13 line. He has a 34 ERA-, 64 FIP-, and 71 xFIP-, and a 2.41 SIERA with more soft contact allowed than hard contact.
He's only pitched twice in high leverage to the tune of 2 0 0 0 1 4.
Now, he's Matt Barnes, so he could go back to being a 4.00 guy any time. But this is his best stretch of sustained pitching ever, and there's a decent chance that he's turned into the late-game force that he has been projected to be for a while now.
If he is for real, the late August bullpen looks to be very strong and deep, with Kimbrel, Ziegler, Barnes, Uehara, Tazawa, Ross and either Kelly or Buchholz. Of course, if Kimbrel doesn't come back till 9/1, there's no roster squeeze for the long relief spot.
Now, imagine that bullpen with a manager who actually bothered to think about which pitchers should face which hitters.

Either Joe Kelly or possibly Casey Janssen could be a real shot in the arm in the second half. Any word on how hard Janssen is throwing in Lowell?

He's pitched as well as anybody else and with Kimbrel down, they could really use him. I'd trust him in the pen over Kelly at this point and Buchholz will wind up starting or wind up getting traded soon enough.

I'd trust him in the pen over Kelly at this point and Buchholz will wind up starting or wind up getting traded soon enough. It's unclear that you can trade Buchholz even if you feel you need to get a starter to supplant him. He may still be your 6th best starter. Furthermore, with Kimbrel on the DL, you have room to keep him around. In the scenario where Buchholz goes back to the rotation, I'd option Hembree to take a 10-day look at Kelly, then Hembree comes back up and either Kelly goes down or Layne gets DFA'd. That projected bullpen was just a guess that Kelly would outpitch Hembree, and hence the latter would be optioned to make room for Kimbrel when he gets off the DL. But I really should have listed Hembree as a third option for the last spot. If they trade for a starter, Buchholz goes to the pen. It's the same scenario as above, except that there's only one spot for Hembree, Kelly, and Layne. You would have the luxury of keeping Buchholz in the pen until Kimbrel comes off the DL -- and if by that time Owens or Elias or even Johnson looks like a viable 6th starter, you could in theory deal Buchholz and open up the last spot for either Kelly or Hembree. However, if we're in mid-August already, which seems likely, that makes little sense; in two weeks you're going to have room for all of them when rosters expand. The difference between Hembree or Kelly versus Buchholz as the mop-up guy and last man in the pen, over two weeks, is negligible. OTOH, if a starter gets hurt and you need someone else in September, the difference between Buchholz and Owens might be huge. I'd keep Buchholz around as a wild-card emergency replacement. Of course, if anyone gets hurt, you have the depth to cover it.

I still think the Red Sox need another Bullpen arm. A lights out flame thrower.

Current MLB leaders in WPA/inLI (Win Probability Added adjusted for Leverage Index at start of each inning pitched) per appearance, prorated to 40 appearances, minimum 25:
1.89 Robbie Ross, Jr. 1.88 Chien-Ming Wang 1.87 Zach Britton. Britton leads with a raw 3.51 WPA. ... 3.73 Matt Barnes the last month. He has a 2.56 SIERA in that stretch, too, which is a top 20 figure (out of 154 qualified). Ross is 50th.
When everyone is healthy, this is a pen with 6 guys capable of pitching the 7th to 9th. Kelly could make it 7.

Some BP updates “ evandrellich: Farrell said Red Sox are ”hopeful“ Koji Uehara comes back in regular season. That implies some uncertainty.” “@bradfo: Kimbrel to throw bullpen tomm. Hopes to have two bullpens before West Coast trip. Sim game might be next. Sounds like progressing quickly.”

Heard on ESPN that dombrowski is in interested in Robertson from the white sox.
Have we ever had success with former Yankee hurlers?

Speaking of which, with a week to go, why isn't there a "trade deadline" thread. I know DD made most of his moves already but there is still the possibility the Sox add another piece or two. Plus, we can speculate on other teams trades, needs and valid rumors.
Also, I would take Robertson over Tommy Layne without blinking once.
