The Rays made a pretty good low-budget move picking up John Lamb, who was DFA by the Reds last week. He's out of options, but he's also one of the most obvious bullpen conversion candidates I can think of. He's a big lefty with some control issues but great swing-and-miss numbers.

So what's new name of the Binghamton Mets, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets? It's the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. That beat out the other finalists: Bullheads, Gobblers, Rocking Horses, Stud Muffins and Timber Jockeys.

Okay, so Rumble Ponies is obviously a ridiculous name. But that logo, especially the one on the left, is kind of awesome.
Still think it should have been some form of Spiedies/Speedies.

As a 21 year old, I think Rumble Ponies is pretty funny. I'd be willing to bet a lot of the younger guys playing for them next year will completely embrace the new name, even if they're doing it as a joke.

Can we start a gofundme page or something to get Ginuwine to throw out the first pitch on opening day?

Minor league team names are out of control. In the past week or two, we've also seen changes from the Jacksonville Suns to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20161102&content_id=207787114&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb&partnerId=ed-10960570-55448839) and the Brevard County Manatees moving to central Florida and becoming the Florida Fire Frogs (http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20161026&content_id=207219106&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb&partnerId=ed-10953371-55448839)

I've gotta be honest - I actually kinda dig FireFrogs. It's nonsense, but it sounds right linguistically. You know, it just kinda works, like Toledo Mud Hens. What I don't like is... what the hell gives them the right to be the "Florida" FireFrogs. There are like 300 affiliated minor league teams in Florida.

They got nuttin' on this: www.milb.com/index.jsp?sid=t515Lol, I was living in Modesto when they voted on this name. I'm thinking that when I was there, they were a Rockies affiliate.

Cespedes has opted out of his contract with the Mets as expected.

The Cubs declined Jason Hammel's option(12 mil) in favor a 2 Mil buyout. I get that he tends to fade as the season goes on but I'm not seeing the logic here. If Clay Buccholz (4.78 ERA, 5.06 FIP, 0.5 WAR) is worth 13.5 million, how is Hammel (3.83, 4.48, 1.5) not worth 10?

I agree, it's tough to see the logic there. Only other thing I can think of is if the Cubs are really up against their wall financially, with a few guys eligible for big raises. Arrieta particularly is going to get a massive bump even if they can't come to terms on a long-term deal with him. But even if that were the case, Hammel at $12M would seemingly have some trade value, even if it's for a B-grade prospect.

They *can* give him a QO, but he'd surely accept it. No chance they offer as they didn't want to pay him 7.2 million less for his option. You'd think they would keep him for insurance in case Montgomery falters, or at least try to trade him.
Edit: Quote from Theo “The intent was never to exercise the option and then trade Jason, so we will not consider that path,” said Epstein. “Instead, Jason will have the opportunity to enter free agency coming off an outstanding season and the ability to choose his next club.”
Seems like they don't believe he'll be as good or better than Montgomery could be.

In a desperate pitching market why is Hammel not valuable? He was recently a goal for the Sox. Wouldn't he be now at such prices?

Isn't it possible that this Hammel thing was because of some personal issue? I remember him being very pissed off at Maddon in at one game where he was removed, maybe they didn't want to work with him.

Some (minor) philosophy from poet and songwriter Ian Anderson That song is awesome, I have a very personal connection with Stand Up. I was on a trip with my father on his friends family house and it was really crowded with a lot of people I didn't know and I was really really awkward. I was like 15-16 at the time and I bought the Stand Up CD that day and later me and my father had very bad altercation over absolutely nothing, it was awful and I felt awful. The thing that saved me that night when I felt like complete crap in a house filled with strangers was that album and I must have heard it a gazillion times in a row in my discman. Me and my dad were cool the next morning and we both apologized and god the rest of the trip sucked but I really love my father. Wow I went off-topic hard but point is life is too short to go without some great music.

I was in Vegas when they came through, not long after it was released. They were the headliners. Anderson pretty much ran through all the songs in their set on one leg, the other propped up on it like some sort of satyr.
It was hard to get the kids in the audience to pay attention to the lead-off band. The Eagles had just released their first album and Bernie Leadon, a great musician, was still with them. They absolutely ripped it up. That was a good night.

They're easily one of the best concert groups I've ever seen. Ian was amazing when he was young, he did the entire benefit concert standing on one leg tossing his flute in the air and didn't miss a beat.
A crackup note, they were MTV's first "Heavy Metal" band of the year. Methinks MTV's staff was on something for that designation.
